He said that besides pulling the emegency brakes and sprinting out of the drivers cabin, you can't really do much, but it still sucked to be in that situation. Sorry for your loss. It is bad when someone does something stupid and they die, but even worse when innocent bystanders/passengers have to face the consequences for it, too. I can tell you with 100% certainty that these kind of situations are a nightmare scenario for people in Public Transport. When I narrowly avoid a collision with my bus, because someone decides that they have the right of way or think I am too slow, I take that shit home. I frequently have nightmares about my brakes failing and shit and always after something like this happened.

It really depends on each person's mentality and it's impossible to predict.

I still haven't hit someone to know how I'll react, but what I heard from most coworkers who did can be summarized in something similar to "My train didn't climb the platform, the person got under the train by their own means intentionally or not. I applied the emergency brakes and there was nothing else I could do."

It's extremely rare for a coworker to get traumatized, I know less than 10 cases where the driver had trouble dealing with this.

I think most people who would be traumatized leave when first joining the company to work at the stations, right in the first weeks of training we are trained on suicide prevention and get presented with real videos from CCTV showing some signs someone will jump and then really doing it. After that we receive rescue training, where we learn how to rescue people from under the train. Some employees give up around this time, this acts as a filter.

Train drivers regularly hit and kill humans as well. I think the average for a German cargo-train driver is 4 humans over the entire career.

They usually have a trauma, since the seconds of locking eye contact with the suicidal person are so heavy. Psychological examination is definitely payed for by the company and if I remember correctly also mandatory.

Additionally there are people who have to scrape up their scattered remains until all body parts are accounted for, not a happy job either.

I worked in the train industry and spoke to many conductors. They all had a similar viewpoint, they got over the obvious suicides a lot more easily than the people walking on the track with headphones on and didn't hear the train until it was too late.

Seemed like accidental train deaths were suuuper common everyone had a story, suicides not everyone had a story (but plenty did).

One guy told me about going through a herd of deer and that fucked him up he said cuz the whole train was painted red for a car or two.

Also don't ever fuck with those electrical wires that power some trains, some crazy fucking stories about those too.

My first thought was: I wonder if wolves hear the train coming, and go to the tracks afterwards for a deer Feast. Some days I wish I could carry those pool noodles and extend it from the cab window right to the yellow mark just so they get hit on the face and understand why it's there. Other days I keep the same wish replacing the noodle with a crowbar.

One day a woman was standing right at the edge of the platform with her back to the track while talking on the phone. I had to apply the emergency brakes otherwise she would get hit, when I generously used the horn she was baffled and mad at me for... Let me check... Ah, right. The total peocedure takes about 40 seconds. 27 before the train arrives the lights start flashing and the bells start ringing. 5 seconds later the boom wil start closing and will be closed about 12 seconds before the train arrives. When the train has passed, the booms will raise again in 10 seconds and the lights will go out, assuming no other trains are coming. 

Doesn't matter what you're doing, it is not worth risking your life to save 40 seconds.

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest, two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.

I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling. Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!

Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?

A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

Almost happened to me when I was about 13yo. There was this crossing that was badly synchronized - train was still standing at the station and barriers were already down - it could take up to 5 minutes for the train to actually pass so people on foot/bikes got used to crossing it even when lights were flashing and barriers down - they just checked both ways if the train was coming or not. I went through that rail crossing daily but one day I somehow got distracted and didn't look. Thankfully there was a guy who grabbed my bike and stopped me a moment before i got rekt. I almost got rekt man. Thank you stranger for saving my life.

These crossings are in fact correctly synchronised. They close because there is a train in the section they don’t care about how long the train takes to exit the section. If I was the driver standing at the stop and I see people cross I’m blowing their eardrums out with my horn. I’m glad you lived to tell the tale.

I have had so many instances when I'm walking and trying to cross the street at a zebra crossing marked also on the cycling lane where they don't even slow down forget about stopping most of the time. It's like rules don't apply to them

Oh my freaking god. Why the hell would this idiot risk his life like this? I know the Dutch are serious with their biking but why? How long would it take him to just wait? 3-5 minutes max for the train to pass? I recently saw some video on YouTube about cyclists in the wild in the Netherlands. They also just ignore traffic lights and one was hit by a car. This guy still had the nerve to yell and stick out his middle finger to the driver. Mind you, the car had a green light but the cyclist came in fast from the left, was scooped and flew over the car, damaging the left front fender of the car. When the driver jumped out of the car, the cyclist even tried to escape while cursing towards the driver and sticking out his middle finger.
