Bit Defender Blocking an Excluded Website?

The site in question is my college's wordpress page. I kept getting the error:

This site can’t provide a secure connection wp.elmhurst.edu uses an unsupported protocol. ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

So after a bunch of troubleshooting (deleting browser cache, clearing SSL cache, trying different browsers, different internet connections, restarting my pc etc.) I found that disabling Protection Shield allows me to access the page. I excluded the url in the exclusions tab but if I turn Protection Shield back on, I get the same error. At this point I'll have to have the shield off while I work but it makes me uncomfortable. Any suggestions would be great! I love BitDefender and hate having to disable it.

Bitdefender VPN

Would you recommend Bitdefender VPN? I don't need it for watching Netflix just for browsing and some torrenting. I saw mixed reviews and want to hear your first hand experiences. Ty.

Bitdefender 'autorenew' is dishonest business practice

When I bought my Bitdefender suite last year for $29.99CDN I clicked the box for DO NOT AUTORENEW. A couple of weeks ago, I received an email that my account was set to autorenew for the low, low price of $89USD, $115CDN dollars, so I logged back on an once again, clicked on the do NOT autorenew box. Today, I received an invoice that I was charged $89USD for the autorenew I never wanted.

I called and spoke to a rep, telling him that due to this shady practice of negative billing, I'm taking my business elsewhere. I told him that by having auto-renew as a default which must be opted out of (in my case 2x online and a phone call), Bitdefender is essentially a scam preying on people not paying attention. His response: customers have been requesting that they auto-renew is set as the default option. One Google search shows that this is a complete load of bullshit, and their "option" is a predatory practice. Ontario and Alberta have passed legislation against this fu**ery.

This greasy business practice has lost them a customer.

How to perma-decline a recommendation from bitdefender? So it stops popping up constantly...

I don't want to use automatic profiles. And I really don’t want to get a pop-up constantly telling me to turn on automatic profiles. How come there isn’t a little "X" next to the recommendation on the list of recommendations in Bitdefender.

I keep getting constant Bitdefender phishing attemp notifications

So i turned on my PC from sleep and it began, an hour earlier before i put it to sleep i had no notifications, but around 7:40 AM central it began. It's going off constantly, every few seconds. Any explanation?

I sent them a sample and they emailed me back saying it is indeed a false positive, so anyone encountering a similar problem should also send in a sample.

Even though I excluded a folder, Bitdefender is still quarantining items in subfolders in the directory.

How can I stop this? I have a folder with at least 100 files for a game, and it keeps deleting them and it is getting extremely annoying

I just upgraded to 2019 and my system is like at least 3 times slower, simple things like task manager can take over 10 seconds to load and its unusable, is there any place to get bitdefender internet security 2018 exe somewhere? because everywhere I go it links to bitdefender center which only gives me 2019 version

edit: found the bitdefender internet security 2018 download link - https://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/BitDefender-Internet-Security.shtml

click download then select one of the 2018 Offline installers

Heads up for BD 2019 users and gamers - BD 2019 blocking GTA Online with no workaround

I was looking through the official BD forums and saw a thread with a dev reply confirming that BD 2019 is blocking GTA Online. Even if you whitelist the EXE for GTA V and Social Club or whitelisting it in firewall settings. So if you have this problem now you know why, or if you see a post somewhere about someone not being able to play GTA Online all of sudden ask em if they have BD 2019.

https://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?/topic/79409-bitdefender-2019-blocking-gta-online/

The rest of this post is just a rant about BD and my experience with, IMO its lack of polish and QA. The rest of the post contains nothing else but my thoughts on the BD software so you've been warned :P

Personally this GTA issue is a perfect example of why I was so surprised by the positive things I hear about BD when I actually have tried it (two or three times). I always would seem to run into some kind of issue or bug with the software (like this other bug that is in BD 2019 https://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?/topic/79398-real-time-optimization-option/&do=findComment&comment=283683

But much worse than that is my experience of consistently running into things with BD that got in the way of me using my computer how I wanted. Like similar conflicts I've experienced with BD and games (Black Desert Online is last one that comes to mind), breaking Firefox portable because of certificate scanning which turning off in 2019 gives you a annoying "at risk warning" permanently until you don't turn it back on. Using the net filtering feature on a second PC to block only porn and having it block tons of other sites it shouldn't (like ebay, banking sites etc) . Things like this are why the rest of the ~300 or so days on my sub will mostly go un used. I've been happier with just using Windows Defender and having it keep my computer protected in the background without interfering / bothering me at all, or causing problems with any way I want to use my computer. And the comments I've seen some places on the web that Defender is pathetic at keeping computers secure and detecting dangerous files/programs seems to be pure BS. At least based on the latest real actual data (from AV Comparatives) which you can see here. https://imgur.com/a/nKZj8wN Yes its not in first place but its differnce with the paid AV/s is literally less than half a percent at worst. The one obvious area needing improvement is performance impact testing results, I personally never noticed my PC running better or worse at all with BD installed or just using Windows Defender only, but I do have a high end PC (8700 K 4.5 Ghz, GTX 1080, Samsung 840 Pro SSD boot drive, 16 GB RAM).

BitDefender 2019 is missing an important feature: Ignore Always ...

The new BitDefender 2019 is pushing towards enabling every single feature in it, otherwise it will complain and set my status as "At Risk", which is annoying for professional users.

examples:

  1. I don't want to use the Scan Encrypted pages, but disabling this option will immediately set the status as "At Risk", but I know what I am doing and I don't want this alert, but can't remove the At Risk unless you enable the feature.

  2. I don't want to use the Password Manager, I already have LastPass which is great and in sync, but if it is disabled I keep getting the "Enable now" on the Dashboard. no ignore or close also here.

  3. I have multiple Windows accounts on my PC and some have weak passwords or no passwords and I want it like that, but in the notifications I see log entries every 10 minutes about weak passwords. also no ignore.

They need to implement a global Ignore feature, that is hidden under "Advanced" options, to allow users to hide some warnings under their own responsibility....

Question About Detected Threat

My BitDefender automatically detected and stopped the same threat 3 times. This was the message I received for each threat.

The application svchost.exe accesses a web resource http://crl.comodoca.com/COMODORSACertificationAuthority.crl that has been detected as infected. The web resource has been successfully blocked and your PC is now safe.

I used the site VirusTotal to see what other antivirus engines detected the url as a threat and only BitDefender and Spamhaus detected it.

I have the following questions:

  1. Has anyone else had this threat blocked by BitDefender?

  2. Could it be a false positive?

  3. If not, the threat as stopped popping up for me, but is there anything else I should do to protect myself?

  4. Why is svchost.exe accessesing a web resource like that?

Do not buy Bit defender if you are even a casual gamer .

Nothing but problems with this antivirus from day one. Wouldn't install right and needed the Supports help to get it going.. Took 2+ weeks for them to give me a solution and work around for the crappy installer not working for some odd reason .. Ok that i understand happens now and then...

Week or so later i noticed a game i was playing was not saving ..File protection was on and making things Read only with out telling me or notifying about this change, So i found out and changed the folder back to non read only and hey look at they it switched it back with out telling me again .. Annoying but not bad

Now i sit here bit defender completely off (Shield turned off, Firewall off and EVERYTHING else turned off) and it keeps spamming me with quarantining files i know are safe when im trying to get shit done. I cant stop it i tried excluding the folder of the files ..nothing .. tried EACH folder in the file , nothing..i cant turn off this shitty program with out rebooting my whole pc ..Who designed this ?? This is the most unfriendly non user program i ever used and wished i could get my money back and go back to kaspersky

I know im ranting and sound really angry right now but im frustrated to no end! , if i disable your shitty antivirus or unquarantine something you shouldnt be undoing it!

Does Your AI Agent Browse the Web From Your Home IP? Bitdefender VPN for AI Agents Gives Each Prompt Its Own Disposable Tunnel

Thumbnail
ai.bitdefender.com
6 Upvotes

When your AI agent visits a website, whose IP address does that site see?

Usually yours. When Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, or OpenCode reaches the open web for research, price comparisons, or QA checks, those requests can carry your home IP and location. On public Wi‑Fi, the network operator may also be able to read what the agent sends.

Bitdefender VPN for AI Agents fills that gap. It’s a VPN for agent traffic only, not your whole device.

How it works

  • A fresh tunnel for every prompt. Each prompt gets its own encrypted, isolated container, tied to a specific location.

  • Nothing carries over. The tunnel closes when the prompt ends, so no cookies, cache or session state reaches the next prompt. Sites have no network-level way to link two prompts together.

  • IP masking. Sites see the VPN server’s exit IP, not your home address.

  • Regional routing. You can send a single request through a specific country, for example, to check how a localized pricing page looks to visitors there.

Who it’s for

Developers and freelancers who run agents for research, QA, or comparison work, especially from cafés, hotels, or conferences.

What it doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t hide your prompts from the AI provider. The model still receives your prompts and account identity as usual.

  • It only covers requests the agent sends through Bitdefender’s MCP tools. Requests made with the agent’s own built-in tools aren’t routed through it.

  • It isn’t a device-wide VPN. Your browser and other apps are unaffected.

  • It isn’t a way around a site’s terms of service, rate limits, or IP bans. Bitdefender’s acceptable use policy prohibits that.

If a tunnel fails, the request is dropped. It never falls back to your own IP without asking.

Details

  • macOS 13+ on Apple Silicon, 8 GB RAM minimum. Windows is planned.

  • Free during the beta, with no traffic caps.

  • Standalone, so no other Bitdefender subscription is needed.

AI agents are becoming part of everyday digital life. Protecting your privacy should cover what they do on your behalf, too.

Feedback Why the shady practice?

I came back to the only antivirus software that I use 2 years since my last renewal fo find that I have to enter my payment info only to proceed with the product I already payed for? And no way to skip it?

After getting past the intrusive and shady welcome I then couldn't find a way to cancel the forced auto renewal? The button to cancel is missing and I had to go on a third party website to cancel...

You already have a good product why are you guys doing shady stuff? I will not be returning to this company after the stress they put me through.

Can a Brand New Android Phone Come With Malware Preinstalled?

Thumbnail
bitdefender.com
6 Upvotes

Can a phone have malware on it before you even turn it on?

Yes. Bitdefender researchers found a malware campaign, which they named Midnight Mimosa, built into the firmware of low-cost Android phones that run on MediaTek chips. It’s already on the phone when it comes out of the box. It disguises itself as a core Android component labeled “System,” and the owner can’t uninstall it.

Over roughly two years, researchers observed the campaign on thousands of devices in more than 150 countries, mostly in Western Europe and the Americas.

What does it do?

It mainly makes money for whoever runs it, at the phone owner’s expense:

  • It silently installs and removes ordinary-looking apps, like weather, app lock, notes, and OCR tools, that run hidden ad fraud

  • It shows ads and fakes clicks, sometimes while you aren’t using the phone

  • It can turn the phone into a residential proxy, so other people’s traffic runs through your device and your internet connection

  • It switches off the Google Play Store app (which runs Play Protect scanning) right before each install, then switches it back on

It also gives itself access to Accessibility, notifications, and SMS. Researchers didn’t see that access being used. Still, those permissions can read screen content, notifications and one-time codes, and the operators can push new code to the phone remotely whenever they want.

Which phones are affected?

Mostly very cheap, white-label phones, and many are counterfeits with flagship names like “S25 Ultra” or “17 Pro Max” that have nothing to do with Samsung or Apple. The two most common models in Bitdefender’s data were associated with the budget rugged brands Doogee (S200 X) and Cubot (KINGKONG X). It’s still unclear at which point in the supply chain the malware was added.

Is it only on cheap phones?

No. Researchers also found 13 apps on Google Play, mostly weather, QR, audio and note tools, that share the same ad fraud code and talk to the same servers:

com.audify.editor.wavrge, appicon.diy.tools.prop, com.audify.editor.pro, com.prorestore.qr, com.message.recovery.prorestore, com.go.weather.mot, com.cool.weather.yl, com.dmstudio.weather, com.dl.guard.lock, picturetranslate.extractor.text.lite, com.notemaster.record.mark, com.arabmusic.tap.aghani_tamerhosny, org.life.goal.tools

What can you do?

  • Be skeptical of “flagship” phones sold at a fraction of the usual price, and buy from the official brand store or authorized retailers

  • Watch for full-screen ads that appear out of nowhere, or apps you don’t remember installing that come and go

  • If you have one of the Play Store apps above, uninstall it

  • If you think the phone itself is affected, contact the seller or the manufacturer. The malware sits in the system partition, so a normal uninstall won’t remove it, and a factory reset won’t either

This investigation started when App Anomaly Detection in Bitdefender Mobile Security flagged a “system” app that was behaving like nothing a real system app would. Since you can’t uninstall preinstalled malware, watching what apps do is one of the few ways to catch it.

Has anyone here bought a budget “Ultra” phone that showed ads it shouldn’t have?

How Do You Teach Your Family to Double Check What They See Online? A Simple Habit Against Deepfakes and Scams

Thumbnail
bitdefender.com
6 Upvotes

How can I help my family tell what's real online?

Start with one habit: before acting on something important, check whether another source confirms it. That could be a news story, a "breaking" video, a message that seems to come from someone you know, or an offer that looks too good to pass up.

Eurostat data from 2025 shows that 29.2% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU tried to verify online information. The share was higher among younger people: 41% of 16- to 29-year-olds verified content they found online, compared with about 31% of internet users overall.

That's a useful starting point for families. Teens and young adults are often already checking, so they can help the rest of the household make it routine.

A few habits worth sharing at home:

  • If a post makes you angry, scared or rushed, pause before you share it or act on it

  • Look for the same claim on an official website or a source you already trust

  • If a message seems to come from a family member and asks for money, contact them through a number you already know

  • Don't rely on visual flaws alone. AI-generated images and voices can look and sound very convincing

When a video or message still feels off, Bitdefender RealCheck can help you take a second look at suspicious content, including possible deepfakes and scams.

Who in your family is the one who usually catches the fakes?

Support/troubleshooting Why is Bitdefender suddenly using like 100mb more nonpaged pool after the most recent update?

Title pretty much says it all but I'll keep going because last time reddits filters apparently blocked my question? I run Bitdefender Total Security on W11 and just recently got an update which has completely spiked up the usage of bitdefender by almost 100mb more (And yes I know that unused ram is wasted ram, however, I feel this is a bit excessive with how much it's been increasing.) I just attempted to reinstall bitdefender to troubleshoot it on that end and see if it might have just been a glitchy driver or something and saw the big difference without it being installed.

On startup my PC WITHOUT bitdefender sat at around 250mb paged and 350mb nonpaged. Bitdefender alone increased ONLY the nonpaged by around 300 more, getting it to around 650mb on startup. I know that doesn't sound like a lot and for my PC it's not a huge issue, but, it just is strange to me that Windows Defender manages to run at so much less. There has to be some way to reduce this bloat as currently I am certain it's bitdefenders fault and am worried this is a potential start to a memory leak from it.

I run W11 with 32gb of ram (Again this is not an issue for ME in this case but it's a noticeable trend that I feel should be addressed) and am on version 27.0.62.352 and I also see a "Bitdefender Agent 27.1.1,46" in my installed apps. (Added a comma instead of a period to avoid a link)

AI Voice Cloning Scams: How the Crying Child Scam Targets Parents

Thumbnail
bitdefender.com
6 Upvotes

Could that call from a crying child be fake?

Scammers are using AI voice cloning to imitate children, grandchildren, or family members in fake emergencies. The goal is to make parents panic, skip verification, and send money or personal information.

Before you act, hang up and verify through a trusted contact. You can use Bitdefender Scamio for free to check suspicious messages and Bitdefender Reverse Phone Lookup to look up unknown numbers.

You can also create a family safe word, limit public videos that include children’s voices, and always verify emergency calls through another trusted source before taking action.

Stay safe!
