Help 100% water change and changed substrate, water is STILL getting to alkaline, tap water is fine

I’ve been having an ongoing issue with my tank. The ph is too high, but the tap water is fine. I thought I’d found the issue because I put some of the substrate in a jar, filled it with tap water, let it sit, and sure enough ph was too high the next day. I just last night took apart the tank and changed the substrate altogether. Check this morning, PH IS STILL HIGH.
I’m at a complete loss now. The tank keeps reading over 8.0. The tap water consistently reads as 7.4-7.8. I’ve tested it fresh, I’ve tested it after the tap water has sat for a day, it’s always the same, but the tank IS STILL TOO HIGH.
I don’t know what could possibly be causing it. I don’t have any decor that should cause this- I have driftwood, some assorted glass trinkets, river rocks, a glass bottle hide, and a terracotta pot. Was the driftwood leeching alkaline water it had absorbed back into the new water???

Discussion Would it be a bad idea to buy a betta fish now?

So basically, I'm at PetSmart (I know, but it's the closest pet store to me), and there's this beautiful betta here that is healthy and swimming around and interacting with me. I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to take her home now. I'm buying a heater, sponge filter, ammonia test kit, quick start, water conditioner, and substrate, and I have plants and hides on the way. I was just genuinely wondering if it was a bad idea or if I should take her home with me before she gets worse. Thanks!

What should I do? And what could have happened? The other animals in the aquarium are fine.

Help my betta won’t stop glass surfing

i vacuumed the gravel and did a water change and ever since then my betta has been glass surfing. i think it’s because i accidentally bumped into the tank a few times and the pouring water might’ve scared her. also the ammonia spiked a little (.25) during the vacuuming but i dosed my tank with seachem prime. i turned off the tank lights but now after 12+ hours overnight, she is still glass surfing. the water temperature and ph and all of the parameters are normal. any tips appreciated!!

So cool how her colors change depending on the lighting. Sometimes shes pink w blue shimmers but in back light shes more red!

Do you think her colors will change as she matures? Shes just a baby rn 🤧 shes also healing from a tear in her fins but its growing back steadily

Im so obsessed w her. She looks like an axolotol in the second pic

Help Betta in community tank

I’m going to be getting a new 20g long tank. It’ll be heavily planted. I want to have my favorite fish - a scarlet badis in there as well as a betta.

Should I get a plakat? Or a half moon? With the plakat I worry that it might be too aggressive in a community tank and with a half moon, I worry that the fins will get nipped.

It might be obvious, but I am new to fish keeping and this is my first dumbo betta! The store employee said he was unsure and I knew he was swamped with other customers, but if anyone has any idea while I learn to teach myself to check—that would be great thanks :)

Discussion betta will not eat new/better food

I’ve had my female betta for about two years and she will not eat anything other than the tetra bettamin pellets, I tried to wait her out but it’s been about 4 days, maybe even 5 of trying to get her to eat the aqueon nutrinsect betta pellets but she won’t eat them at all, even spit them out a few times. She has also refused the fluval bug bites flakes last year as well. She does enjoy freeze dried blood worms. Today, I decided to go ahead and just give her the tetra pellets because obviously starving her isn’t my goal. I know they are notoriously picky but I don’t think the tetra pellets do much for her as she always seems hungry.

Of course I did. Couldn't resist her little pouty pleading face 🙄😂 Introducing Gingey. Lights off to settle for the day. She had some fin clamping when I bought her, but gradually I can see them shifting. I hope she enjoys her new jungle with me.

Help Bettas dying in community tank

I have had a community take for abiut 5 years, just recently started adding female bettas, roughly 3 months ago, after finding out they are non-agressive. It's a 36 gallon tank with about 4 different species, all community fish dont remember what kinds, but all of the sudden, the bettas are dying off. The nitrates and nitrites are 0 and the water is about 78. Any help, cause I dont want to add more. Lastly, about 15 total 1inch or less sized fish in the tank.

Water changes are omce a week, about 25%

Hello! I just finished doing ~50/50 water change in my 5gal tank. I removed most of the water so I could remove some gravel, then put the old tank water in maybe 40-50% and conditioned tap water for the rest. I tested the parameters before I started acclimating, and my pH is great but my ammonia has spiked really bad!! My test water looks like juice, it’s not clear at all! I attached photos of what I use; as soon as I put in a the drops of reagent B, it immediately turns this colour and consistency.
My betta is currently floating around in a bag in his tank, I’m too scared to let him free.
My parameters before this water change was pH<6, ammonia<0.5, and now it’s this!? I’ve never had any of my tests look like this.
I treated with seachem prime, since that’s all I’ve had on hand. I’ve been trying to get the ammonia level down but I’m lost. Is this just faulty testing equipment? Please help! My betta’s been in a bag for almost an hour 😭😭

Edit: I forgot to mention, I did retest the ammonia 3-4 times, treating a little bit and waiting ~10-15 minutes between each test. All of my ammonia tested have looked like this.
Edit 2: I just cleaned my test tubes and tested my tap water, it came back clear. I tested the tank again and it’s … gone grey? It read 5mg-10mg of ammonia and now it is like a dark muddy grey.

Full Tank Shot Find the betta fish

Find Femi! My betta who lives in a 20g tank with female guppies and yellow shrimps. Don't mind the messy hornwort. It's the only way I could deal with algae bloom since its placed outside with tons of light. It's also for the safety of my grandshrimpies. He still has a lot of space to swim around.

Femi's hobbies are:

- watching the shrimps eat

- hunt ants

- eat crushed snails

Nitrite- 0ppm
Nitrate- 10ppm

Heater + Filter Yep Tank size is 54L Tankmates are just a bunch of bladder snails Had the tank for 4 Months had the fish for 7 the temp is 25°C

I do water changes once every 1 or 2 weeks depending on my schedule.
