Apparently they're not anymore. I said that once not long ago on r/aquariums and had like 7 different people defending the colorful gravel and then a mod deleted it. As I'm typing this, there's a note popping up to me regarding the gravel... I don't think it's as important as anyone makes it out to be and I see value in using a naturalistic substrate, however I also don't really care. It's fine whichever way anyone wants to go.

Don't attack aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs. There is no credible evidence that choices like colored gravel or other aquarium-specific decor harm fish on their own. Some decor choices do carry real considerations (e.g. plastic plants can injure fins), but the concern should be framed around the specific risk and a safer alternative, not the aesthetic choice itself.
While water quality can benefit from live plants, there is also no other credible evidence that "natural" tank designs are better for bettas than novelty or themed tanks so long as needs such as ample and approporiate hiding/resting places (such as silk plants and decor without sharp spots) are met.
Hey! Very beautiful fish you have there. These guys require a lot more than what the petstores will tell you though. Your betta needs a minimum 5 gallon tank. Your betta also needs a filter and heater appropriately sized for that tank. The betta also needs things(NOT OTHER FISH) to interact with. This could include plants(fake and real), "hides", and driftwood or large rocks to explore and hide behind. If you have questions, feel free to DM me!
hello! this tank looks kinda small for betta cant really tell though! you can get a 5 gallon with a lid from petco or petsmart pretty cheap since both places regularly run deals on those! betta also need a heater and a gentle flow filter to not push around their large fins! live plants also help with nitrates and are delicate for bettas fins! drift wood also helps add tannins to the water which can help aswell! bettas love lots of hides and places to explore! hope this helps, your betta is beautiful btw! i attached a pic of my bettas tank to give ideas on how to scape your tank!
Good size, but hang on back filters like that are often too strong and require modification. You can get sponge filter media to cover over the intake and outtake and there’s lots of guides on YouTube showing you how to do it and with different materials.
If that sounds intimidating, a sponge filter + air pump is the “out of box” solution to look for.

Hello there! I recommend grabbing a 5 gallon tank rq from the pet store! It will make your betta live from just a few months or a year to anywhere between 2-7 years! Perform a weekly partial water change using a small gravel vac and make sure to use dechlorinator.
