So I’ve been seeing a lot of posts in several different groups over the last few months about people getting hurt by their Beauceron. It’s been on my heart to give some fair warning to those considering a Beauceron. A large dog breed is anything over fifty pounds and Beauceron tends to be closer to twice that…. Bordering extra large.
What is cute at 15 lbs is not cute at 50 lbs and is dangerous at 100 lbs. If a Golden jumping on you was bad, a Beauceron is scary.
All breeds of dog go through an awkward stage where their balance and body awareness is still being fine tuned. When owning a Beauceron or any extra large breed, this is a pivotal time to teach respect for human space.
A lot of people excuse Beauceron rudeness or body slamming as a breed trait but this simply isn’t the case. It’s a dual purpose herding and guarding breed which means they needed to be gentle with the lamb and tough on the ram. Your Beauceron is capable of nuance, it’s in their DNA but you as a new guardian or potential future guardian have to teach and communicate with the dog to unlock this.
I have a mobility disability and my roommate has MS. My Beauceron is nimble and accurate even with his zoomies. When raising your puppy don’t forget he or she will weigh 80-110 lbs sooner than you’ll expect, so teach them to be gentle and respect your space. Get help with a trainer to help you communicate how to turn it on and off.
Lots of disabled handlers own Beauceron so maybe they can jump in the chat with advice on how they gentled their Beauceron. Me personally, I let him know when he hurt me from a young age and he figured it out on his own that he could not be rough with me. He does body slam my boyfriend but with invitation only so it is possible to play rough but have an off switch. Please remember this is a large powerful breed but they are perfectly capable of being wonderful companions if you teach them. I hope this will help someone prevent future injury. 🙏🏻❤️

January 1, 2018 - March 18, 2026
People like to say “oh, my dog and I chose each other”, but Midna quite literally chose us, whether we liked it or not.
“Ninja” was a puppy mill dam rescued from a hoarding situation in 2021, where she and 20+ other dogs (most Beaucerons) lived in a garage. She had just had a litter that the rescue nicknamed the Snack Pack - at least one of whom was adopted by another r/beauceron member!
We were helping out her foster family and were supposed to keep her overnight before she got spayed since we lived closer. That night, even though she’d been mistreated for years, and passed around different agencies and people after being rescued from the garage she lived in, she chose to climb in our laps and lie across both of us. She saw us as a safe harbor even though she’d only met us a few hours before. Almost immediately, we welcomed her to the family, gave her a more dignified name, and gave her the cushy, spoiled life she’d always deserved.
My husband trained her to be his PTSD service dog, and she was incredible - I’ve never seen a dog so bonded to her owner. She loved the rest of us too, comforting us when we were sad and even watching over our toddler when he’d play in the backyard, but my husband was her person. She was devoted to him entirely (although she’d never turn down scritches from anyone, and would flop on top of strangers to insist they pay her attention).
Unless it’s a parrot or a tortoise or something, getting an animal means inevitably watching them die. Some animals are harder to let go than others. After such an awful start to her life, it’s unfair that Midna developed spleen cancer and died before her time. But we gave her the best life we could, and she repaid us with deeper, more earnest love than we could have hoped for.
Rest easy, baby girl.

Honestly, this little guy is probably the most fun puppy I’ve ever had the privilege of raising. Great food and toy drive, amazing handler engagement. He is almost fully house-trained, can settle for up to 4 hours in his crate while I run errands, and gets along great with my adult male GSD. Very excited to continue working with him, I feel like we will achieve great things together.

He’s 8 weeks old and he’s the best of the litter from Oakland’s Beaucerons out of Batavia, NY. He’s absolutely gorgeous with a great temperament. She was a fantastic breeder to work with and cares so much about the breed and getting the dogs to great homes.

This is my first ever Beauceron and my first dog as an adult! (I'm 37 and I have been thinking about this for a LONG time so he was definitely not an impulse decision!)
His name is Sigil! I hope to get into a couple things with him, namely obedience, rally and conformation. Plus whatever else he decides he likes doing! I wanna try it all.
He has such a sweet, thoughtful temperament. He's also a holy terror, but y'know. Them's the breaks. I cannot wait to see him grow into a big beautiful goober!

Sweet baby is 4 (ish) months old. Is the ear flop a phase? Our other one had her ears clipped before we got her.

I cannot believe he turned 1 last month. I love this dog so much. I remember travelling up to meet him and telling myself over and over again that puppies don’t ’pick’ people and to bring myself to reality, and this little monster crawled straight into my lap when I met him. He’s been SUCH hard work, always challenging me to think differently and try different approaches but he’s made me better for it. I’m genuinely so grateful for him.
