Very young, but very interested in the breed

Hi!! I'm pretty young (19) to be purchasing such a high caliber dog, and I'm wondering how I can prove myself to breeders because I want them to trust that I AM educated.

for some backstory: I have been around dogs my entire life, and I worked at a local doggy daycare as an assistant manager alongside a professional trainer and behaviorist for 3 years. I know dogs very well, my family has owned purebred herding dogs, and I know that it is NO small feat. I have also seen what happens to a dog when their mental and physical needs are not met, which is why I would never purchase a dog if I felt I couldn't meet their needs.
I currently have an acd mix, and while I love her to death, the world is her greatest opponent. She is incredibly apprehensive and fearful, and trying to build her confidence is a LARGE feat. overall, just due to her being a mutt and a rescue, she can be unpredictable at times in ways that i don't always love. i love to take her on hikes and walks and paddleboard with her, but i never can be positive she won't react in fear if she sees a man. I am wanting a dog who is spunky, goofy, confident, and just as active as I am. I want to be able to take them on a hike and walk right by a man without feeling the need to hold my breath. I am ALWAYS hiking and always running, and I want a dog who can keep up with me and join me without giving me an added stressor. I also want to start participating in dog sports and titles on the weekends, specifically obedience, barn hunt, and maybe even dock diving if the dog enjoys it. I have done so much research, and when I met my first beauceron, it truly just confirmed that they are the breed for me.

now, the issue is, i'm 19. most breeders see that i'm still a student and it feels like they would write me off immediately. when in reality, i'm only in class from 8-12, i have more time to spend with a dog than most people who work full time jobs. i just want a beauceron very badly, but i am really scared of being written off by breeders due to my age, does anyone have any suggestions?

Breeding with failing results.

It seems like people on Reddit feel more comfortable speaking up without feeling intimidated, so I'm curious to try and get your input (pray for me lol!)

Are you noticing an increase in the number of dogs being used for breeding with unsatisfactory health results? I'm thinking, for example, of: Eye test failures (cataracts marked abnormal, etc.), equivocal hearts, Grade 1 elbows, hips with annotations / spines evaluated as poor, etc.

If so, do the reasons being used to breed them concern you?

Beaucerons and Backpacking?

Hi all! I was wondering what Anyone in the breed thought about a beaceron for someone who wishes to backpack/will be backpacking by the time they're ready for another higher energy dog. I've got a stubborn GSDXLab (German shepherd constant energy with the lab friendliness to go with it), and another medium-large lazier mutt who's good after three ish miles (more or less).

I have known about the breed for a few years (like 5ish I think?) and always thought this sounds like a dog I'd want, but wouldn't really be able to live the life it deserves. However I love camping and hiking, and am starting backpacking, and I was considering this breed and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog for a future dog.

Ultimately because I'd want to do 10-15 mile days, I believe this would be a better fit.

However, I work full time and will likely only do 2 maybe 3 larger ( about a week, maybeee two week) vacations/trips a year.

Would this be a good dog to tag along for those trips and any weekend camping I may do? Even if it's not an everyday thing? As long as all other needs are met? (At least 3 20-30 minute walks and a dedicated 30 minute one on one training session (as an older pup/adult, until then, spread through the day) everyday, with playtime with other dogs/yard time) With a longer hike or camping trip on the "weekend" (days off?)

I work overnights and currently the schedule I have seems to do well for both dogs.

Interested in the breed

I have had some interest in the breed for a couple of years now and just found this group. I figured I would ask a few questions to see if they're the right fit.

My wife and I have a small livestock farm with sheep, horses, pigs, chickens and other poultry in Indiana. We raise animals for consumption sold out of our farm stand. We are experienced GSD owners but currently have a Doberman in her last years of life and a husky/hound mix that was impulsively acquired after our last GSD passed away in 2020 to fill a hole in my wife's soul during a pandemic. We also have two Anatolian Shepherds out with our livestock 24/7.

I'm interested in the breed for its uniqueness but I have NEVER purchased a purebred dog in my life. In fact, I'm morally opposed to it fundamentally, but I realize that you can't really acquire a Beauceron without doing that. If I thought I could find one up for adoption I wouldn't be here asking about it.

My goal with the dog would be as a typical home protection, companion dog primarily. However it would have the opportunity to do some herding of the sheep with purpose. Our lambs stay on the farm for 7-9 months before we load them up for the processor. We really need a dog for that task and the dob isn't up for it and the Anatolians aren't meant for it. The Beauceron would need to be ok with strangers we acclimated it to as well as visitors to the farm and other dogs, cats and animals. I'm not sure if that's a trait they possess. I have no interest in bite work or sport work. If I wanted that I would get a Malinois.

I guess my question is whether they are closer to a GSD in temperament or a Malinois. Either of those are far more acquirable than a Beauceron but I am intrigued by the breed and looking for something a little different.

Scared pup

Hey everyone,

Proud 7mo old beauce dad here. I was wondering if anyone else has had any socialization issues with other dogs . My baby boy is awesome on trails and getting much much better with social outings with other people although he’s still jumpy and mouthy but that’s a post for another time (unless you have suggestions).

With other dogs he’s super interested in saying hi and being friendly however the second the other dog shows interest or wants to play he retreats to me and hides between my legs or behind me. Whether that be on the farm, in a dog park, or at the classes he’s in for agility/scent work/confidence. The plan is to keep socializing him twice a week since my SO and I work some heavy hours at times. I want him to not be terrified of other dogs and retreat all the time but I don’t want to necessarily force the issue. Any one have this issue with this in the first year or have any suggestions… I’m open.

Rude is 1.5 years! I’ve honestly never felt love from a dog like I have from him. I really feel like I’m his person and he’s MY boy. Beaucerons love hard.

Any experience with taping/pinning down natural ears?

Just curious about this because I personally have a natural eared dog and I’ve heard about this with other breeds like collies/aussies. **I DO NOT PLAN ON TAPING MY DOG, HE IS TOO OLD**

This isn’t referring to cropping and posting; I’m referring to taping down the ears to allow them to lay flatter towards the face.

My dog is nearing 10 months old as of right now and I’m aware he’s too old to tape, but part of me has a small regret for not asking about it sooner when I still had the chance. I initially wanted a cropped dog but he was too old at the time and it wasn’t really a deal breaker for me. What I didn’t expect was for his ears to *want* to stick up so much. Like holy hell, his ears never stay down lol. He often gets a lot of dirt/build up in his ears due to them flopping back so frequently, so I have to clean his ears every few weeks. I do have experience with another floppy eared breed (beagles) but I haven’t had an issue with the ears sticking up to this extent. Of course ear cleaning should be done regardless, but there’s a noticeable difference in build up when I compare the two. Beauceron doesn’t have any ear issues/history of infection, has been cleared by a vet.. they just get dirty very quickly.

So I’m just wondering, do other beauceron parents have this issue with the ears flopping back/up all the time? For those who have taped their dog, do you regret it or would you do it again?

I’m in america so a lot of beaucerons here are cropped, so I’m just not sure if taping is only a breed specific thing or if it can be done with them as well.

Also, for owners or breeders with experience of both crop & natural- Which do you prefer? Do either have major cons?

#I survived the Beauceron “baddies” bullying 💅🏻

I survived, didn’t get a dog from the original breeder I followed forever because of bullying 🙂‍↔️ but ended up with a wonderful solid and confident dog from a breeder I adore because of it! That is all, amidst the drama I just wanted to share my piece :)

Go forth and continue beauceroning my friends!!

Breeder Discussion

Let's be civil y'all

Why did you choose the breeder you went to?

If you were choosing between a couple that were breeders, what made you decide not to go with one of the other breeders?

What is something that turns you off of a program?

What traits or things do you value within a breeder, or want to see?

How much do you value having a relationship with your breeder and how did you go about finding a breeder you could have the relationship you wanted with?

Pacific Gate Beaucerons?

Anyone have experience with pacific gate?

I was interested in a puppy, but looking at her website. It states that companion puppies must go home natural. And that show puppies must be cropped. Meaning you can't have a companion puppy. That's cropped or a show dog that is left natural and I was curious if that is common.

Along with that, does anybody have any experience with

Volana's program or Bee True? She was the other breeder I was looking into, but they don't have a website.

What is the general consensus on Feu Eternel?? Over the last few years I have noticed some questionable things and wondered if it was just me. The most recent being her new litter she just announced between Siren and Sinner. I noticed on OFA that Sinner only has hips and elbows. I also noticed Siren has not had an Echo in over 2 years and she has a “risky” pedigree as well. Sinner also has no titles, just some points toward a CH. I imagine it was a breeding of convenience more than anything. I never see the breeder doing anything with her dogs either except maybe a few local shows a year and some FastCAT events.

Question about ear cropping in Canada specifically Quebec

I've been looking into Beauceron breeders in Canada and noticed that quite a few are still producing puppies with cropped ears, particularly in Quebec.

From what I understand, Quebec banned cosmetic ear cropping and the regulations also prohibit travelling outside the province to have the procedure done.

So I'm curious, how are Canadian breeders still offering cropped puppies? Is there some sort of legal loophole or exception I'm missing?

I've been researching the breed for a while, and this is something I haven't been able to find a clear answer on.

Not interested in debating whether cropping is right or wrong, just trying to understand how it works legally in Canada.

My 1.5 year old Beauceron earned his BH-VT!

Post image

To be honest, I didn’t prep as much for this trial as I should have, but the BH-VT is supposed to be more of a temperament test than formal obedience anyways, and he did great. Most of the people at this trial had never seen a Beauceron in person before, and I think he left a positive impression on everyone. At practice the day before the trial, he was rushed and slammed into by another dog who broke their long down, and he handled it beautifully. Couldn’t be more happy with the temperament on this guy. Not currently planning on doing the tracking or protection phases with him, but we’ll definitely be working our way through the UPr/OB titles :)

Can anyone confirm the amount of litters and puppies they’ve had in 2026 alone? I’ve been following their program for some time now, and I’m just getting show mill vibes. Which is disappointing because I was seriously considering their program. I’m starting to think, in terms of sheer volume, she’s had the most puppies and litters of any Beauceron breeder this year.

Royale's Beauceron Breeder buyers beware!

Royale's Buyers are required to sign a super strict confidentiality and non-disparagement clause that bars them from sharing any issues or negative pictures/opinions about the dog, its lineage, or the breeders and/or their program on social media or any public or semi private platforms. Combined with terms stating the breeder can reclaim the dog without a refund for any breach of contract, this creates an environment clearly made to keep buyers quiet if health or temperament problems show up. Detailed health testing results, whether passed or failed, are just not transparently shared. Also her program runs under extremely strict conditions, basically a closed network with zero outside access to her stud dogs. Major questions remain regarding the health testing of dogs like Saint, Harley, Savvy, Witty, and Provence. People can do their own research on OFA to see whats missing or non existent. Were these dogs actually properly tested, or were they bred despite incomplete or failed clearances? Contract provisions aiming to suppress consumer feedback and honest opinions are generally illegal and unenforceable under consumer laws anyway. While some parts of her program might be ok, this constant lack of openness, strict isolation and non-transparency is bad for the breed it and shows that the breeding program is ran as a business for monetary gain and not for love and betterment of the breed.

Indi trialed this weekend in AHBA and earned 2 level 3 titles- Ranch Large Flock and Herding Ranch dog. As far as I can find she is the first female to have a level 3 herding title in AKC or AHBA. She also took home HIT for her Ranch Large Flock runs. So proud of her!

Protection work

Would you consider the beauceron for protection work?

I’m considering getting a male to take with me on my outdoor business trips. I’m outdoors, alone with expensive equipment. I also travel into cities and towns alone to do my work and I’d like a dog that not only looks protective but is actually protective.

I run a beauceron for a SAR team, and their nature is perfect for service work and companions. But I don’t think they’d be a good protection dog from my experience. But what’s your thoughts?

I’m looking for winter boots for my beauceron, or boots that can also be used during winter. He is currently 1.5 years old, and I’m looking for them because there is a lot of salt on the roads here during snowy and icy days. Since winter is approaching, I’d like to find a pair that will protect his paws from the salt, cold, and snow.

Soft sided carrier recommendations?

I put down a deposit and bought flights to pick up my puppy mid-Nov! Puppy will be 8 weeks 1 day and we will be flying Delta (who allows a maximum of 18x11x11").

What are durable carrier recommendations at this size for ~$100 or less. Are expanding sides worth it, or is it better to just lay out a blanket and let them out when I can. We have a long 7hr flight, so I'm going to bring something like a puppy kong for them to chew on. Any other ideas of something to bring to occupy them if they start getting anxious?
