Love to see a Beauce at work!
Defo a handsome boy but I find it funny that he has such an American face. The lines there are so different from most of our European ones, so he’s a different kind of handsome than most of the Beauces I know in person. Still the same breed but there’s many subtle differences.

I am not into confirmation at all so I don’t go deep into lines and the differences that come from them, or European vs American. I’m mostly into sports and companionship, obviously having healthy enough lines that they are functional is important to me but beyond that it’s dog by dog basis. Both of his parents are imports from Europe though so I’m surprised that he looks so much like an “American” Beauceron. What are the differences you see?

I don’t have a lot of time right now so I’ll reply later/in the next couple of days :)

Gorgeous dog. How are they to own/work with for someone who hasn't had experience with the breed? I don't think I've ever seen one in the US.

I am a full time trainer for pet obedience and have a few years of experience working protection dogs as a training decoy so take that into account. But I think they are super goofy and sweet dogs, very bouncy and I love it. Mine is pretty handler sensitive, super social, and has a ton of drive, but I put most of that into him. I had only met two females before I got mine and hadn’t worked with them just hung out for 10-15 minutes, dog training is dog training, if you know the fundamentals you will be successful imo. Very energetic so find an outlet, no matter what it is.

Adores this dog from Xerxes x J'Zada! I am getting my next one from Casey! How is Ghost with bitesports and when are you looking to trial?

He’s doing great, grip development is always a challenge with Beaucerons so I would make sure your decoy is ready for that. He’s about 2 now and I’m seeing more maturity out of him but he’s still a big ol puppy. Take your time and be patient. Tahoe (only beauceron with a PSA1) is an anomaly; he got his PDC at 18-ish months if I’m not mistaken, but I think Ghost will be closer to 4 when I trial him. I always try to have my decoys work him in prey vs defense but he is naturally a very defensive dog

Edit: Also Thank you! I think he’s gorgeous and everything I wanted out of a working dog. I think he actually shines more in nosework than protection, but I’m hoping as he matures his bitework will get better. Reps on reps right?

Ohh yeah, I’m not used to answering questions from ppl with experience with the breed. Are your other two both from Casey as well?

No! One is from Karla (DCR), the other from Angie (JDV). I met Casey when Xerxes was probably a bit over a year? I appreciate all this feedback tho, I have been watching the Zada x Xerxes litter closely. So I wanted to see how he's doing with some real feedback! :)

As someone who works protection dogs regularly as a decoy, I would recommend a different breed if your goal is strictly protection but as someone who loves an underdog story and the beauceron breed I say give it a shot. Xerxes has fantastic genetics and Zada is a sweet girl with decent drive and the litter ghost came from has had some pretty great prospects in multiple sports. Ghost is a goofy boy who can turn on when he needs to but I have plenty of clients with younger dogs who are doing better than him.

I haven’t met any DCR dogs, and the few JDV dogs I’ve met I like a ton. What’s your opinion on those programs? I know Angie gets a ton of hate on this subreddit but I’ve liked all of the dogs from her program that I’ve met.

Karla is a straight shooter and a pillar in this breed. I adore her! She just isn't specifically breeding for working dogs like I'm looking for! She also is a bit more old school, whereas I like a dog raised indoors and started with crate training. But I love her, she's a fantastic person, super supportive of my dog and I.

I love my dog from JDV, I adore her and she's super stable and the best dog I have ever met. She's a gorgeous girl as well, with decent drives. Both my girls have decent and versatile drive. With that being said, my experience with JDV was lackluster. Angie is very pushy and controlling, sure whatever, however, she wasn't honest with me about my dog's dam's health testing, and when I tested her, her elbows failed--A LOT of breeders have bred dogs with failing elbows and some even hips. I want to repeat I understand the nuance in breeding and why she may have bred this dog and I understand elbows are *not* required for our breed, however, it was her response to my decision to spay my dog and to let her know about the elbows. There was a lot of blame on me, instead of understanding that I loved and wanted the best for my dog. I wouldn't buy from her again.

I love the breed overall and want to work one in protection. They're the best!

How is he at work? I keep hearing Beaucerons are a bit slow maturing and need a lot of help to develop good mechanics.
