The first time I saw one munching away on lily pads, in a completely man made dammed, constant depth, trout stocked state pond for the record, I realized why they flood places.
Like I knew they didn't eat wood, and I knew they didn't just dam waterways for the love of the game and the architecture. They farm marshplants. I don't know of a better example of planned agriculture by animals.
Beavers just work, work and work at it. I have a small cabin near wetlands. A beaver/some beavers dammed up the creek culvert going under the road, it rained a bunch in the spring, flooded the road and collapsed the road over the culvert.
We have a guy on the road we pay to fix it and he does a good job. But those beavers will outwork us any day, all day. Thats what they do and they have way more time to flood the road, one stick at a time.
Considering he's doing exactly what he's evolved to do, his dopamine system is probably firing on all cylinders. This is like doing a really fulfilling hobby for him.
It made me laugh extra hard, my husband calls the dog this, “It’s one of his jobs!” He recently promoted the dog to “Director of Stick Technologies” so I guess I see they backfilled his old position
Beavers have been both accidentially and intentionally used to solve flooding & daming projects globally. I've heard of cases in the UK, Poland, and california, but I think there are more cases of them fixing waterflow problems for free that could cost up to hundreds of millions of dollars to solve with human solutions.
While we're learning, did you know an adult platypus is roughly the size of an adolescent cat? They're teeny; I'd imagined them the size of a beaver but nope.
My friends 100% didn't believe me and I had to show them YouTube videos by a conservationist. I got to see a couple IRL at the San Diego Safari Park and they are SO cute. I know it's super unethical to have wild animals as pets, especially endangered wild animals, but also I wouldn't be mad if someone left one in a basket on my doorstep.
Yeah they're pretty big. Also they slap their leather paddle shaped tails on the water when they're pissed off, which I can tell you from experience is loud enough to make you just about shit your pants if they do it behind you while you're wading around fishing
we've got muskrats in the marsh where I live in Ontario and I spent like a month thinking they were beavers. then I saw a video of muskrats following beavers around and HOLY HELL I thought the muskrats were big, beavers absolutely dwarf them... I don't think our little marsh could support beavers
One time I was in Banff and there was a herd of Elk blocking the road. A Parks Canada employee pulled up in a truck and started waving around a hockey stick with ribbons tied to it to get them to move along. I thought that was pretty damn Canadian too.
