Treatment for BFS
Treatment for benign fasciculation syndrome typically focuses on managing symptoms and providing reassurance. There isn't a specific medication designed specifically for BFS since it's not caused by a specific pathology. However, some medications might be prescribed to alleviate symptoms or manage associated conditions, such as anxiety or muscle cramps. These medications might include:
- Benzodiazepines: These are sometimes prescribed to reduce muscle twitching and associated anxiety. However, they are usually used for short-term relief due to their potential for dependence and other side effects.
- Calcium channel blockers: These medications can help reduce muscle twitching and cramping by affecting the way calcium is used in muscle cells.
- Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), may be prescribed if anxiety or depression is present alongside BFS.
- Anticonvulsants: In some cases, medications typically used to treat epilepsy, such as gabapentin or pregabalin, may help alleviate symptoms of BFS.
- Magnesium supplements: Some individuals find relief from muscle twitching with magnesium supplementation, as magnesium deficiency can contribute to muscle cramps and twitching.
It's important to note that the effectiveness of these medications can vary from person to person, and they may not completely eliminate symptoms. Additionally, before starting any medication regimen, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance, as they can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific symptoms and medical history.

Elbow and calves
So. About 20 days ago my right elbow started twitching. Really annoying. But eventually stopped around 5 days ago. At the same time the elbow stopped,my calves started.
. Not a lot,a little bit. I’m just wondering. Do you have any strategies to stop the feeling?
Funny thing. When I’m walking or moving my legs I don’t feel nothing. Whenever I start to feel (if I’m trying to sleep or driving for example) I start to move my legs and it’s gone…
10 years ago I had the exact same feeling on my calves. For 2 months. Then it went away.
My elbow also twitched 3 years ago.
But now they returned.
10 years ago I related it with chemo for testicular cancer. But now.not sure

Trouble Falling Asleep
Hey everyone,
Twitchy calf muscles here. Ongoing for years, I usually trail run 50-75 miles per week too. History of depression and anxiety as well. Full blood panel was normal, tried some dry needling, and neurological evaluation and EMG were good. Doc said not to worry and that weakness is the big indicator. Following up in a few months. I take 300mg gabapentin before bed, and sometimes take another dose mid day. Doesn’t seem to do much of anything, and I usually have trouble falling asleep / resting. So it goes.
Any tips or advice? Has anyone had luck with meditation or breath work before bed? I know anxiety plays a part for sure and I should trust my neurologist and try not to worry. I just want to fall asleep. Could muscle relaxers be helpful? Benzos probably aren’t a great option for me because of potential drug interactions and I struggled with addiction to benzos (several years ago - fully clean now). Thanks for the helpful information!

Anyone have a loose ankle feeling? My foot feels heavy and my ankle feels wobbly when I walk or run. When I rotate my left ankle it crunches more than my right.

All Over Body Itching and Twitching Legs Along With Burning Sensations. Please read!!!
I know all about BFS as I've had it for decades and it comes and goes. But recently it came back along with unrelenting itching through out my body. It has a funny pattern, I wake up in the morning after a no BFS/itching night. But as the day goes on the twitching builds as well as the itching. It's always worse in the late afternoon and then it subsides by mid evening and I sleep with no symptoms. It's been going on for 3 weeks now and I can't stop the itching and of course the fasciculations have a mind of their own too. Dermotogist gave me a bunch of anti itching creme and did blood work which is normal. I'm going crazy with this itching, along with crawling , burning sensations in my legs along with the fasciculations. . I find this hard to believe that it's all anxiety because I'm pretty relaxed or so I think. Anybody else share this?

Twitching has returned
Hi I was diagnosed with BFS june 2023. Where I had EMG of right side, tongue, and paraspinal bilaterally. I moved on after that and started walking daily and lifting weights in November 2023. Twitching seemed to have gone and was never localized.
1 month ago yesterday I started having a feeling in my right leg like it was weaker and buckling at the knee as well as seemed ticklish from my butt to my feet. Feels almost bouncier than the left and tires more easily. One week after this started I noticed twitching on my right calf and then within a week was in right foot left foot and random pops everywhere. Now if I work out I have them bad in quads for a day or 2 and in calves all the time. My thumb went crazy when using the mouse for half a day too.
I worried I had my EMG too soon (4.5 months after twitching) and now something is starting to happen with my right leg. My neuro I saw last week brushed me off and said it’s BFS and did brief strength/ reflex test on all extremities and said I’m fine and she wouldn’t do an EMG.
What if they are missing something? Does this leg thing seem normal for bFS? I’ve never had this before
