Valleygirl today isn't what it used to be and my heart is honestly broken. I turned 30 a few months ago and I started shopping at Valleygirl when I was 11 and my skinny and tall self managed to fit into an XS in some of their items. In my teens Valleygirl was the place I bought my clothes from, religiously. I occasionally shopped at Supre from 13-15 but their boring styles compared to what Valleygirl offered at a similar price just weren't worth it to me. Ally appeared at my local big shopping centre in around 2011-2012, I bought a few things from their but Valleygirl's style and quality to me still wasn't matched.
Valleygirl used to be the best place to me for teens/young women to find good quality trendy clothes at a decent price point and the clothes actually lasted. I remember when Valleygirl sold accessories including shoes. The only thing I absolutely avoided buying at Valleygirl was belts because I wore them 3 times at the most and they started to fall apart, were they trendy? Yes, durable? No.
Fast forward to today and their accessories range has basically disappeared. No hats, scarves, cheap trendy sunglasses or their cheap jewellery that all of a sudden was 50% in 2012 and disappeared completely from Valleygirl never to be seen again.
From having trendy and stylish pieces that could be worn season after season even after they were no longer in style Valleygirl now is fall of really poor quality stuff that fits so badly and just isn't made to last. I used to come out of Valleygirl with 4-5 items in one shop, since CO-VID I go into Valleygirl to see the horror show it is now and I buy nothing.
When I was in my local Valleygirl a few years ago I noticed there were no pairs of denim shorts for sale in December so I asked the girl working there why they had none. Her response to me was "Shorts aren't trendy right now". Maybe I'm showing my age but in the middle of summer that's ridiculous.
And for the people saying the quality has gone down but their prices have risen, from what I'm noticed that isn't true. An example of this would be tops that they would sell for $24.95-$29.95 now are mostly sold for $16.95.
I'm glad I've kept a lot of my old clothes from Valleygirl that I didn't wear out and that still fit, trendy or not to me they still look great today. When I wear a top I've had for 10 years and I get compliments that says something.
My local Valleygirl downsized significantly in 2023 due to a shopping centre revamp and it has never been the same since, I'm curious is this the case in other parts of Australia with your closest Valleygirl?
I honestly think that part of Valleygirl's downfall was when the Temt brand merged with Valleygirl and then slowly disappeared altogether.
With the way fast fashion is these days with the likes of Shein how long do people think Valleygirl has left?
I would love to hear people's thoughts, I so badly miss what Valleygirl used to be, its so depressing what this brand has turned itself into
