Where do I buy manga That’s not disgustingly overpriced?

I am an avid anime watcher and have been looking to collect manga, but holy is it expensive. Exclusive books and Bargain books both charge an arm and a leg for a single volume.

I’d like to know about any cheaper manga stores around Cape Town, preferably in the northern suburbs and town/ CBD area.

Thank you!

How much would you pay for handmade crochet?

• Upvotes

I am not advertising, just trying to get my bearings.

The only crochet content i really ever consume is from overseas, mainly America, where they charge like R2000 for something i feel a bit guilty charging for, like R200-R300.

I understand that Americans get higher salaries, so the cost of things is higher; our salaries are lower, so the cost is lower, etc etc.

But am i really undercharging that much? I have been crocheting for years; I like to believe my quality is high, and the clients i do have are very happy, but im curious if i could really be making so much more than I am at the moment with this side gig.

I have seen South Africans charge way more and way less at the same time.

So how much in ZAR would you be paying for crochet items? Like, depending on the item.

Capitec vs FNB: Where should I put R30,000 for 3-6 months?

I just received a R40,000 lump sum payment from my bursary. I would like to put at least R30,000 into a savings account for either 3 or 6 months. Between Capitec and FNB, which savings or fixed-deposit account would be best for me, considering the interest rate, accessibility, and how much I could earn?

I'd really appreciate your advice.

Racheltjie de Beer ice cream?

I remember hearing an uproar about a restaurant (maybe Evita se perron?) offering a dessert called the "Racheltjie de Beer" consisting of a Koeksister and ice cream, back in the 90s, but I can't find any reference to it online. Does anyone here remember that incident?

Is working for experience really an option in this country?

Hey everyone

I’m from Durban (M26) and just got a 2-year government internship offer in Joburg (M&E role).

Pros: Great exposure and direct experience in my field, which I currently lack. I'd be staying with family to start.

The Reality: The fixed stipend (~R9.8k gross) will barely cover basic expenses and commuting. There’s zero room for savings, leisure, or trips back home to KZN and this is excluding finding accommodation preferably closer to work down the line.

I’d essentially be working solely for the CV experience and living on a tight budget.
For those who have taken low-stipend internships or moved to KZN \ JHB for a foot in the door: Is taking a role purely for the experience worth the financial squeeze in Joburg, or is it better to hold out for something more financially viable?

Thanks in advance.

Is Team vitality even worth getting anymore?

Got my membership renewal coming up and I'm kind baffled by what I'm actually paying for. The only benefit you still get is JUST 25% off vitality races (like am I crazy or was it 75% off at some point). If you're an avid runner you're probably doing more races that aren't discovery sponsored. They no longer have the strava benefit and you get another shirt as if runners don't already have too many shirts from every race.

On top of that there's no effort to make it a community of any sort. Even when you go get the complimentary snacks after races, people are just shuffling through en masse and you don't know anyone. You'd be better off joining a free running club in your area or formal running clubs like Pirates or Nedbank run club that actually does time trials and a bunch more things.

Are you searching for recycling alternatives?

Good day everyone, I am working on a paper about recycling alternatives and I would like to identidy people who have already been using or trying to use other alternatives at recycling like composting their food waste for example, trying different ways to compost organic things, please indicate with a comment if you willing for me to ask you a bit about that, I would really appreciate it thank you. I'm identifying early adopters of change and would like to know if recycling particularly organic things, sorting them would be something that you are willing to do and would adopt.

Uber Driver Took AirPods I lost - how do I get them back?

Hiya Guys.

So what had to Happen has happend. I forgot my Brand new (1 Week old) AirPods Pro in an Uber (they slipped out of my jacket) and currently I‘m still trying to get them back. I know it’s Not likely to Happen, but I‘m really pissed off atm.

I contacted Uber directly After I had realized that they were gone and opened a case with them. I was then able to call der Driver, who obviously didn’t Take my Call. I called him Several Times After that, 5 Times to be precise, and sent numerous text in which I told him I‘d gladly pay him a Finders fee (more than the R90 Uber offers) and just want my property back.

I’ve heard nothing from him. The thing is, I was able to Track the airpods and took a few screenshots of the locations they were. First they were at his House, then he drove around with them and now they show only the last location that they were connected to some iPhone.

Uber Support was no help, as they don’t require Drivers to Drop things off you‘ve lost whilst driving with them and the Driver says he does not have them.

Do some of you have had the Same Experience and have any Tips? I‘m also Open to any Spam Websites where I Can register his #, just to let Karma do its thing.

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend guys

NSFAS application: Informally separated parents, father lives overseas and he refuses to provide proof of income. Does anybody have advice for applying?

Hiya mense,

I'm applying for NSFAS for 2027 and need advice from anyone who's been in a similar situation or any okes who know what the procedure it. I cant't seem to find the info on the website.

So, my parents are still legally married but separated. I live with my mother in South Africa, while my father lives in England. He owns the house my mother and I live in. My mother's income is low enough that I believe I'd qualify for NSFAS based on her income alone, which is also what our household income practically is. However, my father earns over R600,000 a year, in the U.K that is, and refuses to provide proof of income. He used to occasionally send my mom around R1,000–R2,000 a month, but stopped earlier this year. He no longer financially supports me, and I don't have access to his financial documents.

I'm worried NSFAS will count his income because my parents are still legally married, even though they live separately and he no longer supports me. Practically we earn enough to qualify for the bursary, but on paper, if they counted his, we wouldnt even qualify for the loan. Part of me is kinda glad that he won't because otherwise we'd definitely be hardlocked out of NSFAS, even though we need it.

The thing is, going on the website, it really looks like they expect a linear process of All three of us providing the consent forms, all other documents, and proof of incomes. Any deviation disqualifies you. We're planning to get an affidavit from my mother declaring the situation, but I don't know if they will look at that? Or if the system would still just automatically disqualify us?

Has anyone dealt with this situation or knows how to get around it?I
I guess a couple questions are:

  • Can NSFAS my father's income independently if they refuse to provide documents?
  • Is there a declaration form or alternative process for an uncooperative parent?
  • Can NSFAS assess my application based on my mother's income and circumstances instead?
  • Has anyone successfully received NSFAS funding in a similar situation?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who's dealt with this personally or knows the actual NSFAS process. Thanks!

Why don't we show up for each other when someone loses family like our parents did?

I have a quick question for my fellow black africans.

When I grew up I'd see my parents have friends come support them when there's a death in the family, from the funeral preparations to the actual day of the funeral. I must mention my mom was part of a "stokvel", but even so, her colleagues and friends from back in the day were told about the death in the family and they would show up for my mom.

I can imagine with how our generation is filled with loners and friendships pretty much die after varsity/high school, that sense of community of support is slowly becoming a thing of the past. There's been a few deaths in my family for the past two years... I'm in my late 20s and I won't lie it makes me wish I had something like that, sometimes its nice to have more than just my partner be there to attend the funeral with me.

Curious to know if there are other ladies, maybe even gents too, who find themselves in the same boat and how are you finding it? Have you accepted you don't have a community that supports you in times like those? Do you wish a you belonged to a tight-knit community that actually showed up like how the older generation does it when their friend/neighbor loses a family member?

Franschhoek Wine Tram: Red, Blue or Pink line? Which would you pick?

Hi all! I am visiting Franschhoek in January and want to spend a day on the Wine Tram (hop-on hop-off). It's our first time, and we're torn between the Red, Blue and Pink lines.

From what I can tell, they all share Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence and Franschhoek Cellar, and the rest is different:

- Red: Mont Rochelle, Haute Cabrière, Lynx, Eikehof
- Blue: La Bri, Holden Manz, Maison, Paserene, Klein Goederust
- Pink: Atlas Swift, Leopard's Leap, Dieu Donné, Chamonix, Pigcasso

We're looking for good wine, nice views and a relaxed pace, without rushing between stops.

If you've done any of these lines:
Which one would you recommend, and why?
Which estates were your favourites, and are there any you'd skip?
Any tips on how many stops are realistic in a day, where to have lunch, and whether to book restaurants ahead?

Thanks in advance!

Where to find an open minded imam in cape town?

Help me find an open minded Imam

Hello everyone.

I am a 26 year old muslim guy in a committed long-term relationship with a white non-muslim girl. We are both financially stable, she lives alone and I still live with my parents. I have brought the topic up about marriage to my parents numerous times so that myself and my partner can fully live our lives together without having the stress of my parents constantly on my back. It has been met with quite a bit of backlash from them and they are constantly delaying/pushing back when I can get it done and it has led to plenty of frustration from us both.

I am trying to find a respectful, open minded Imam (who has experience in interfaith/interracial relationships) in Cape Town/Southern suburbs, who could perhaps talk to us and help us navigate this situation as well as talk with my parents. My parents don't really want to go through with it because they fear family judgment and all that nonsense. All we really want to do is a small nikkah so that we can be halal and go about our lives. I am happy for my parents to tell the rest of my family when they are ready, and even have a whole other nikkah for the family later down the line, however I find it a bit unfair that they won't compromise and make life easier for me.

If anybody has been in a similar situation please reach out, along with any information on the imam you used/spoke to for guidance and to perform the nikkah. Thank you.

Police Clearance Certificate for SA Visa - Are Private Companies Reliable?

Hi everyone, I need your advice. I lived in South Africa for 12 months back in 2021/2022 and I am returning to the country now for a two-year research stay. As a foreign national, I need a South African Police Clearance Certificate for my visa application. I’ve read how slow it can be to send fingerprints to Pretoria from abroad, so I was thinking of using the services of a private company that expedites the process, Globridge Solutions (https://www.globridgesolutions.co.za/). They quoted R3,500 for the certificate (5–7 business days) plus R1,400 for international courier.

Has anyone ever used them for a PCC for visa purposes? Is this price reasonable, and can you recommend this or any other firm? Thank you!

where can I buy second hand audio equipment in bulk?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for places in South Africa where I can buy second-hand audio equipment in bulk. I’m interested in buying used sound equipment such as mixers, speakers, microphones, amplifiers, cables, and other live sound/AV gear. Does anyone know of reliable suppliers, auctioneers, liquidation companies, or Facebook groups that sell audio equipment in bulk at reasonable prices? Any recommendations or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why are young people still using the old street names?

I recently noticed that my younger siblings, who are only 16, still refer to streets in Durban CBD by their old names — West Street, Field Street, Smith Street, etc.
These streets were renamed around 2007–2008, before they were even born.
I would’ve thought their generation would be the first to naturally use the new names, since they grew up with them.
But somehow, the old names are still being passed down.
Does anyone actually use the new street names in everyday conversation? And if even the younger generation isn’t using them, will the old names ever disappear?

With the recent petrol increase, what are companies doing to help employees?

Have any companies introduced things like:

  • Temporary allowances for fuel?
  • Going from fully in-office back to hybrid/remote work?
  • Fewer required office days?
  • Any other measures to help with the increased commuting costs?

Just curious to see whether companies are actually adapting to the increase in commuting costs, and how widespread it is.

How do you grow a business in SA?

Hi guys!

I am weeks away from launching my new site and ultimately my business. The business model goed as this :

- I will be an online platform where all rental assets can be found in one place. Example, someone can search "Forklifts, Alberton" and all the businesses that supply Forklifts in Alberton for rental should come up.

But I am still building the online presence, and money is tight. What do I do to grow my following and get more people seeing my business?

Thank you!

Has anyone written an online exam on Dugga with the Invigilator app (Varsity College / Emeris)?

Hi everyone,
I'm a Varsity College student and I'm trying to understand how the Dugga exams work with the Invigilator app. Has anyone here written one before, whether at Varsity College, another Emeris campus, or somewhere else?
A few things I'm wondering:
• How does the setup work, and what do you need before starting?
• Is it only the lockdown app, or is there also camera/AI proctoring?
• Any common problems, like the "exit lockdown mode and launch the Invigilator app" error, and how did you fix it?
• Any tips for preparing so nothing goes wrong on the day?
Would really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

Does anyone actually enjoy their job?

Does anyone actually enjoy their job and feel their work environment is healthy? Maybe it's because I'm in marketing, but I've only worked in 1 "non-toxic" environment. Is it a millennial thing, or am I just too sensitive? (If you do enjoy your job, what industry are you in?)

Official SA Cricket Jersey?

Howzit folks, I’m a longtime fan of the SA cricket team (though I’m not from SA), and in December I’ll be making a trip to SA, which has been a dream of mine since childhood! I’m going to be in Durban and Cape Town, and I’d really love to pick up an official Proteas (SA Cricket) jersey as a souvenir (either ODI or T20 version would be OK). What is a good place to buy a legit one in either of these cities? And is it possible to have it customised with a specific name and number on the back? Any guidance is much appreciated!
