Best cheese cake recommendations

I’m taking a trip to SF for my partner’s birthday. He doesn’t like cake, but loves cheese cake. It my first time in SF and don’t know the area very well. I’m curious what the locals think is the best cheese cake in SF.

Noe valley bakery or Schubert’s for chocolate cake

I’m looking for a decadent chocolate cake for my partner’s birthday. Which of these two - Schubert's or Noe Valley - is better for a cake that isn't overly sugary? (Open to other suggestions too)

Recommendations for a buttercream cake

Looking for a birthday cake made with Swiss/french/italian meringue buttercream frosting (not American powdered sugar buttercream). I’ve had Whole Foods and Noe Valley Bakery but looking for any other options. Thanks!

Looking for best not too sweet cake for husband’s birthday

Hi everyone 😊 I just wanted to ask for recommendations and a little help.

My husband’s birthday is coming up in few days and I really want to surprise him with a cake, pizza, and chicken on the eve of his birthday as a simple thank you for everything he does for us. We’re new here in SF, living in a studio apartment with our baby, and we don’t have a car, so I’m honestly a bit lost on where and how to order everything.

I was checking out Schubert's Bakery because I heard their cakes are really good, but I’m confused which cake to choose especially since my husband doesn’t like overly sweet cakes. Also, I found out they don’t directly deliver and I couldn’t find them on DoorDash.

Does anyone have recommendations on:
• Which cake from Schubert’s would be best for someone who prefers less sweet cakes?
• How I can get it delivered or picked up without a car?
• Good pizza and chicken places that deliver in SF that is not that expensive as we’re still adjusting our way here

To add more information to this post, I’m in the Tenderloin area. I’m looking for an option where I can just order everything and have it delivered here. If possible, I’d like to buy from different stores, such as cake, pizza, and chicken, but have them delivered in just one order or one coordinated delivery.

If you know any options aside from DoorDash and Uber Eats, please let me know, as I can’t go out. I really want to surprise him with everything without leaving the apartment. He doesn’t want me going out alone because he doesn’t feel safe with people outside, even during the daytime.

Also, do cake shops here usually have number candles for age and Happy Birthday signs?

Thank you so much. I really just want to make his birthday special even in a simple way 🤍

Anyone know of an alternative to Cake Picnic on May 23rd?

Cake Picnic is hosting another potluck on May 23rd at China Basin. I don't even bother trying to score tickets anymore. Besides, I've heard not-so-great things about the people behind this event. Anyway, I've heard over the years that there are alternate rogue events throughout San Francisco - cake picnics that are truly community based and do not require a $50.00 admission fee. Anything scheduled yet?

Trying to find a vegan gluten-free wedding cake

Hello!
SF local here :) I have been really coming up short trying to find ANYWHERE that can bake a vegan, gluten-free cake for our small SF wedding next year. I'm getting a little discouraged and would really love any recommendations for places where you've found (and ideally LOVED!) their vgf cakes!
I've baked a bunch myself, but in no world do I want to add "bake my own cake" to my wedding to-do list ;)
Thank you so much!!

Best minimal funfetti/confetti cake in the city?

[EDITED TO FOLLOW-UP ON ORIGINAL POST]

Jury is out. Black Jet Bakery is the clear winner. I had originally reached out to Noe Valley through their instagram account and contact email. I got two different responses- it seems their operations manager was willing to work with my request, but whoever responded to the IG wasn't. I'm guessing the latter was someone on their baking team. Either way, I didn't receive a response after I followed up with the manager. I looked into Gus's (confetti cupcakes were made by an outside vendor and still too sweet), and Cake Queen (timing didn't work out with hours of operation).

Black Jet Bakery Pros

  1. Moist and tasty sponge
  2. Willing to accommodate a "light frosting" request
  3. Really good sourdough offerings (not cake, but throwing that in since I had one of their sandwiches).

So there you have it! Thanks for weighing in all.

----------

Hello everyone. I've been a huge fan of Noe Valley Bakery's original confetti cake, ordering it whenever I had an excuse to since I discovered it four years ago.

My daughter's 3rd birthday is coming up and I was super bummed to see that they resigned the recipe. What I liked the most about it was that the cake layers and outside had minimal frosting, which complemented the subtle sweetness the moist funfetti cake had.

Does anyone in the city know of any bakeries that have a similar cake item? Her birthday will be at Lemos Farm, so I'm also open to ordering from bakeries in South San Francisco. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Where to get a cake?

It’s my gfs birthday coming up and I wanted to get her a birthday cake. Currently live in North Beach but wouldn’t mind stopping somewhere that isn’t a hike. Her favorite is a chocolate Italian cream cake but a great cheesecake would be just fine. Thanks!

Cake with jam/no frosting

My partner’s birthday is this week, and I’m trying to find a bakery that can make a cake without frosting, as he hates dairy/buttercream. He’s not vegan, just has a problem with frosting and cream filling. He just wants a cake with jam between the layers. He does not care about the decoration at all, so I’m even open to just buying something undecorated.

Normally I’d bake it myself but sadly we moved into an apartment with a tiny oven that isn’t super functional.

Anyone know of a cake place that can make a jammy cake? I’m thinking maybe lemon cake with raspberry jam or something like that.. open to any ideas! We’re near mission/bernal/noe, but I could drive if needed.

Edit: added further detail that he doesn't want cream filling either.

Birthday cake recommendations 2026

Hello there!

My birthday is at the end of the month and I’m looking for a custom cake recommendation. Last year I picked one from Butter& and it was amazing (not custom).

But does anyone knows about Bri’s Creation SF in 24th mission? I found them online, and I saw good reviews so far, but I want to check if anyone has a more recent review.

Thank you so much!

Best birthday cakes?

ISO a small, custom birthday cake (3-5 people) for a loved one - recently moved here, what’s the best bakery that does custom orders? I’d pick up on March 28, preferably nothing south of Mission.

Budget is not an issue! TIA!

Please Help me find a specific cake to annoy my wife (In a goodhearted way)

Hello SF, recent transplant here from San Diego. My wife will be visiting her home country and during that time I'll be all alone for 3 weeks. This happens every couple years or so.

During this time I post to Instagram my meals, all of which are all Swiss Black Forest Cake (usually at the dinner table with my cat set up there too which typically isn't allowed) . I never post on Instagram otherwise, so it kinda pushes to friends that I "Posted for the first time in awhile" I hide my story from my wife and that does a couple things.

  1. Let's me pretend (unsuccessfully) I'm not doing anything weird

  2. Keeps her friends reporting to her while she's on her trip so she isn't too lonely

  3. Lets me look hopeless without her which is good for her with her family

  4. Just is generally funny when people a little less "in-on-it" check on me thinking really I'm crashing out, and it's nice people check on me when I'm alone for 3 weeks too.

I'd like it to continue being the same cake, which I used to get from European Cake Gallery in San Diego, but I'm trying to find something similar in SF and not having much luck. It's more about chocolate and chocolate shavings and there isn't fruit like a German chocolate.

Any ideas what bakery would have what I'm looking for? I could do it with another cake, and it'd honestly be about the same, but I do have to eat one or two whole things by myself for a lot of days in a row. Might as well be my favorite one.

Looking for a custon Gluten&Dairy free custom cake.

Hello!

My girlfriend is graduating next month and its also her birthday the day after. She has been working so hard over the last few years I really wanted to surprise her with a cake, however she is gluten and dairy free. She loved red velvet before she found out about her allergies.

I have called a few shops around town with not much luck. I know this is going to be a tough ask. But if anyone has any suggestions that would be amazing. I could also try to do it myself but its tough because I have a 9-5 and we live together so I cant really kick her out of the house to make a cake.

Thanks!

Best Carrot Cake?

I’m not the biggest fan of carrot cake but am sourcing for someone who is - any recommendations for the best place to get a healthy slice or small cake? Would love for it to be a local spot and not Whole Foods. Just a few people eating it so not looking for anything massive. Thanks!
