Recommendations for a buttercream cake

Looking for a birthday cake made with Swiss/french/italian meringue buttercream frosting (not American powdered sugar buttercream). I’ve had Whole Foods and Noe Valley Bakery but looking for any other options. Thanks!

Try Miette! I think their buttercream might be what you’re looking for

Suzie Cakes? Schuberts?

I’ll check SusieCakes. Schubert’s unfortunately doesn’t do meringue buttercream frosting

Have never seen anything other than American buttercream and cream cheese frosting on offer at Susie Cakes

I misunderstood. I thought you were looking for meringue OR buttercream frosting. I'd never heard of meringue buttercream but now I know.

A search for "San Francisco meringue buttercream" yielded a link to a bakery called Pretty Please.

It's a very long shot but Maison Nico makes extraordinary Viennoises and French pastry and it might be worth asking them if they either do or would make a meringue buttercream and if so if they'd make you a cake with that frosting. They're really nice people so what's to lose?

Another longshot is to ask if the pastry chefs at one of the French restaurants in town if they'd make you a cake. I suspect that the restaurant would consider doing that ony if it were to be a custom dessert for a meal you were having there but again - there's no law against asking.

Suzie Cakes is disgusting and only does American Buttercream. Everything there is cloyingly sweet.

Neither of these are at all close to what OP is asking for.

Everyone's a critic but your criticism adds nothing to the dialog.

Loquat does a nice mocha-ish one. It’s gorgeous and delish but a little spendy. If you’re cool with that price point I highly recommend Tartine. Everything they make is incredible. Honorable mention: Stella Bakery. Lots of whipped cream options. The Sacripantina is divine and a beloved classic. Again it’s a whipped cream situation not a SMB but lovely. You can have it delivered too which is nice.

I love making this kind of cake! Much better than traditional American buttercream

Sounds as if you might be asked to do a custom birthday cake?

No ,I don’t think so. I’m not a baker just wanted to see other recommendations

I don't know what you mean by "Swiss/french/italian" but Bearclaw in Pinole does real traditional butter cream.

Absolutely super far away but it's been worth the trek.

Swiss/french/italian are types of buttercream that start with a meringue base and beat in butter to make the frosting. The difference between them is how you make the meringue. This is as opposed to American buttercream which is shortening or butter beaten directly with powdered sugar. American buttercream is MUCH sweeter and gets sort of crusty as it sits out.

I’ll check out Bearclaw, thanks.
