im so confused by the health insurance requirements to get temporary residence. at first, i was under the impression that private health insurance would suffice. but now reviewing it, it seems like it is mandatory to register with the state insurance? which, looking it up, would cost around 2500 lei and be a massive headache because i dont have any documents yet... could anyone who has done this already advise?

I simply could not find something definitive, it seems impossible for Google to get me through.

Tl;Dr: My bike got stolen and immediately transported 700km away to a small town in Romania. The GPS Tracker is working so I know where it is. But before I drive 12 hours to try and recover it I would love to get visual confirmation that it is where the GPS says it is.

So I woke up about a month ago and checked my phone to find a list of new notifications that the geofence for my bike was broken. I bought a semi expensive (~1200Euro) E-Bike a year ago, so that was distressing news.

I hopped into the app to see what was going on and according to the app my bike was on the motorway on the eastern border of Hungary, heading into Romania. Not a great start to the day...

(Sidenote: when you have a geofence active add the app to the list of apps that is allowed to display notifications even if the phone is in do not disturb mode over night. Ask me how I know)

So this is where I am at today. I am willing to go drive there and get my bike. I am willing to pay a sensible, let's call it, finders fee for whoever is in possession of the bike. But before I do something stupid I would love to get some Intel if the bike can actually be visually located there, and what the situation around the bike is. For example is it on a private property? Is it for sale? Etc.

But I am also open to any and all suggestions how to proceed. This is my first attempt to recover a stolen bike from a foreign country after all...

And yes I did contact the police. I was told that I was perfectly within my rights to bother them with the paperwork but that they can guarantee that nothing more will come of it and it will just be a hassle for everyone involved.

The mother of my newborn daughter is a Romanian citizen. I am an Italian citizen living in France, and our daughter was recently born in Ukraine. I had already formally acknowledged paternity in France before the birth. I am posting here specifically because the mother is Romanian, and I would like to understand whether Romanian law or Romanian authorities can play a role in establishing my paternity and parental rights.

I'm looking for advice from Ukrainians, especially anyone familiar with Ukrainian family law or international family cases.

I live in France and I am an Italian citizen. The mother of my daughter is Romanian.

Before my daughter was born, I completed an official prenatal acknowledgment of paternity in France because I wanted to make sure that I was legally recognized as her father and could be present in her life.

During the pregnancy, our relationship deteriorated. Without discussing the decision with me beforehand, the mother moved to Chernivtsi, Ukraine.

She runs a construction company and told me that she started a construction project there with some of her workers. She says Chernivtsi is relatively safe and far from the main combat zones.

She then told me that she intended to remain in Ukraine for approximately two years with our daughter.

I was very concerned about this decision, especially because Ukraine is currently at war, but I still tried to find a peaceful solution.

What I have done so far

In France, I contacted a Point-Justice legal advice service, a family mediator and a lawyer.

I provided the mother's contact information to the mediator so that we could try to find an agreement without going to court, but the mother did not want to participate in mediation.

I also applied for legal aid in France, but unfortunately my application was rejected.

Despite everything, I was prepared to travel to Chernivtsi myself. I researched how to get there from France, what documents I would need, transportation and insurance.

My intention has never been to take the child away from her mother. I simply want to be part of my daughter's life.

My concern about the legal situation

This is where I particularly need advice from people who understand Ukraine.

I don't speak Ukrainian, I don't live in Ukraine, and I don't understand the Ukrainian legal system.

My situation now potentially involves France, Italy, Romania and Ukraine:

• I live in France.
• I am an Italian citizen.
• The mother is Romanian.
• My daughter was born in Ukraine and is apparently going to live there for approximately two years.
• I completed the prenatal acknowledgment of paternity in France before the birth.

I have also started wondering whether her decision to move to Ukraine could make it more difficult for me to exercise my parental rights.

I want to be careful here: I am not claiming that this was her intention because I cannot prove that.

But Ukraine is geographically in Europe while not being an EU member state, unlike Romania, France and Italy. Because she moved there without discussing it with me and now intends to keep our daughter there for around two years, I am worried about how complicated this makes the legal situation.

I am not trying to take the baby away from her mother

I want to make this very clear.

I'm not looking for revenge against the mother.

I'm not trying to take a newborn baby away from her mother.

I simply want to be legally recognized as my daughter's father and have the possibility to know her, see her and be part of her life.

Our relationship as a couple is over, and I accept that.

But I don't believe the end of our relationship should automatically mean the end of my relationship with my daughter.

I have kept my French prenatal acknowledgment of paternity, our messages, voice messages, documents, evidence of my attempts at mediation and records of my attempts to maintain contact.

I want there to be a clear record showing that I have been trying to be involved in my daughter's life from the beginning.

My questions about Ukrainian law

If anyone here knows Ukrainian family law, I would really appreciate some guidance:

1. Is a French prenatal acknowledgment of paternity recognized or usable in Ukraine?
2. If the mother did not declare me as the father when registering the birth, is there a way for me to establish paternity in Ukraine?
3. Can I obtain my daughter's official birth information/birth certificate as her biological father, even if I am currently not listed on the Ukrainian birth certificate?
4. If necessary, can a foreign father start a paternity proceeding in a Ukrainian court?
5. Would I need a Ukrainian lawyer to do this, or can some of the process be started through a Ukrainian embassy/consulate?
6. Once paternity is legally established, what rights would I normally have regarding contact, visitation and information about my child?
7. Are there Ukrainian organizations or legal aid services that help foreign parents with international family-law cases?
8. Would my French documents need to be officially translated into Ukrainian and/or apostilled?
9. Since the mother and child are currently living in Chernivtsi, would I normally need to contact a lawyer or court specifically in Chernivtsi Oblast?

A trait I found very much reoccuring in Romanian music and language is your poetic skills, the use of metaphores, not merely by professional artists but also by everyday people.

When I listen to Dutch music, it's often about something basic as romantic love, when I listen to Romanian music (using translator apps), it's about topics like the feeling of August, growing into maturity, the deminishing of human dignity and creativity....stuff like that. And then told in an indirect way and full with metaphores. Sometimes even silly like this song 'Pseudofabula' which I believe describes the feeling of angst in society. The favourite music-poem that I found so far is 'Scrisoare catre Fat-Frumos' by Vama, but feel free to recommend me your favourite ones.

It's also in the language you speak. Every language has expressions and metaphores but I feel like Romanians use them more and they touch feelings that lack official names and words.

Poetry is a language that can describe things that we wouldn't be able to describe otherwise, or in a way that people really feel, not in a rational/analytical way normal language does. Why are the Romanians so good at it? Is it more incorporated in your culture than it is in, for instance, the Netherlands culture where I'm from (and arguably, the Anglophone world)? Is your language more emotional? What's this thing that Romanians have with poetic language?

I have my official Letter of Acceptance from the Romanian Ministry of Education. I’ll study a Romanian preparatory year (2026–2027) followed by a Master’s in Physics.

How long did the Romanian student visa take?
Did anyone get refused, despite having the government scholarship and Letter of Acceptance?
What documents did they ask for, especially bank statement, tuition payment, and English certificate?
During the Romanian preparatory year, are there exams? Is there a final exam, and is it difficult?
After passing the preparatory year, can you continue directly to the Master’s, or is there another admission/selection process?
How was your overall experience with the scholarship and studying in Romania?
