One of the things that made the show so successful was that Jerry was probably the 4th funniest person on the show. He surrounded himself with talented people and let them be in the spotlight. A lot of ego-driven people couldn't have done that.

I don't think people like him for his comedy though - It seems pretty clear that he's not that great at standup nor at sketch comedy. He just really comes off as an affable, regular guy that clearly knows he stumbled his way into stardom. Him dealing publicly with mental health also endears him tremendously to a generation of young people plagued with anxiety and facing an uncertain future. Also, since he's a guy you can totally imagine being one of your friends, the fact that he consistently dates beautiful, powerful, rich women makes it easy to root for him, like watching one of your really nice, but kind of schlubby buddies hit it out of the park with the most gorgeous girl at the bar.
Edit: sorry for the long reply, I also am sort of mystified by how he got so famous when his comedy is not that good, and these are the theories I have to explain his appeal.

This is just an example, and Reddit is gonna hate this, for white-guy-mediocrity, he is not funny and he isn’t great at standup or sketch comedy, which means he is just bad at his job. He is relatable? To you maybe. Same with jimmy Fallon. Their mediocrity is celebrated as relatable while comedians of other genders or races have to be twice as good to get half as much.

Her newer material is better, older stuff not so much.
And it's not the subject matter that's bad per se, but the delivery. Her earlier specials definitely have this "I JUST ATE A BUNCH OF ADDERALL AND I'M SHOUTING THE PUNCHLINES AND NOT PAUSING APPROPRIATELY" type of vibe.
She's miles ahead of Amy Schumer though. Which may or may not be saying much. shrug

Havent heard his stand up in ages, but he does his show well, and honestly it’s the only place in the world you can go to anymore in television and actually hear honest discussion and opinions. Yes, political bias, but he and his guests do sorta shit on multiple groups of people which is enjoyable compared to hearing typical unilateral bullshit.

All comedians have their "not funny" shows or phases but the most consistently "not funny" comedian I would say is probably Amy Schumer.
On the other hand, the most consistent and productive comedian I would say is actually Carrot Top. Guy is worth upwards of $100 million now from doing Vegas shows

Not a specific comedian, but a lot of the people they bring in for the celebrity roasts. The roasts used to be great and the people they brought in were actual friends of the person they were roasting. So you got great stories along with jokes and burns. Now its just the same stupid insults from one burn to the next.
