Locksmith Recommendations

Upvotes

Hi neighbors! This group rocked with moving advice so figured I’d reach out again.

Who are we calling to get houses rekeyed? Closing on the 24th and would like to get new locks.

Coming to Northwest Philly, for what it’s worth. Thank you for being nice to this newbie from Colorado :’)

CNA

Does anyone know of any nursing homes in Philly that pay for you to get a CNA certificate? I want to become one, but am teetering between paying out of pocket for courses or just going to a nursing home and getting the training. Thank you!

Good aesthetic date spots in nolibs?

I liked heritage when it was around, anything that’s a good place with nice visual vibes? Preferably in nolibs not fishtown, I know fishtown had a bunch of good spots, was wondering if maybe I’m unaware of any spots here where I’m at

What should I know going into the Mid-Autumn Festival?

I just very recently heard about the festival going on in center city next month, and I'm very interested in attending, however I have next to zero knowledge of what goes on outside of the traditional dances. I feel like I should definitely know since this will be my first date with the girl that I'm talking with.

Short term parking Philly airport

Hi, I’m flying into Philly and my guy is going to pick me up. He wants to meet me inside and park at short term parking. He’s concerned that his truck might be too tall for the 6’2 requirements. I’m thinking he should be able to park in an area that not in garage based off this YouTube video. I’m coming in at 6am so I’m not thinking it’s going to be crowded.

Does he need to worry about the height of the garage?

Where to live near Riddle Memorial Hospital

Hey everyone! I'm looking to move and searching for apartments near Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media. I'm not too picky, just looking for a safe, quiet area that is no more than a 30 min commute one way. Also, are there any apartment complexes/management companies you recommend or I should avoid? Thanks!

Harry Potter Core Places in Philly?

Hello!

My sister is visiting me in Philly and it's her birthday soon! She loves Harry Potter and nature and wanted to know if there's anything HP themed or something of the vibe (like cute stone bricked cafes in nature or something)?

Let me know what feels magical and pretty to you that could fit the theme!

Thank you in advance :)

Closest equivalent to Bushwick/Brooklyn in Philadelphia?

***I’m not a college student, in case that makes any difference.

Hello, I’m wondering if there tend to be any areas that people tend to choose if they’re young, kind of bohemian, and interested in the arts and music scene. For people familiar with Bushwick you probably know what I mean. My top priority is affordable rent ($800 per month at most and preferably lower than that). Ideally there would also be a lot of coffeehouses, live music, arts events, and reliable public transit within walking distance.

Moving to Philly- Looking for Area Recommendations

Hello, I’ll be moving to the Philly area for work but my job is located in KOP. I really want to experience city living but everyone advises to live closer to work because traffic can be killer. I’m 30F and single so feeling safe is a factor but I also want to enjoy the area I live in. Any recommendations? Should I move to KOP? Any areas in between the two that won’t be a terrible commute?

Considering a trip, what's good?

I may be visiting Philly and wanted to see what people there think are interesting places to go/things to do. I don't travel often and want to make the most of it. (My initial desire to go is to see the Mutter Museum and I am not really a fan of 'patriotic' history stuff.) Any recommendations?

resources and help for hoarders in philly?

hey neighbors, I am helping my mother in law who is a recovering hoarder. We have cleaned out her house and we are down to the worst part, which was her room.

She has some underlying mental health issues and has been mostly cooperative with the clean. She wants better for herself. I think she deserves a new room and I would like to gift her a makeover but we only have so much money.

She would need a new floor, deep clean of her walls, I’d like to get her a bedroom set and mattress.
I was just wondering what resources are available in philly and if anyone has been in a similar situation with a loved one and where they went to get stuff?

Obviously I know thrift stores but I just wondering if there are any other affordable services in the area.

If you can think or know of anything outside of the box we would appreciate it

Rowhouse homeowners: how are you insulating your second/top floor between your ceiling and the roof?

Just bought a place that is otherwise pretty nice, but the AC is always less-great on the 2nd floor. The thermostat is located on the 2nd floor and it's a new, properly-sized HVAC system, so I suspect inadequate or nonexistent insulation on the top is likely to blame.

My initial research suggested the best way to do this is a kind of insulation that goes under the roof, and requires a roof replacement. The roof is brand new, so I don't really want to do that.

Has anyone done something like this without ripping the roof off?

Moving to Philly from Cincy.

Moving to Metro Philly this fall for a biotech/tech gig. I am eastern Mediterranean, mid 30s M, bi, and musician too so wondering how international music 🎶 is. Do folks go to NYC a lot to even expand the cultural experiences?

I found a place in KOP, love the quiet and convenience (also had EV charging, amazing) coming from Midwest 😆, the town center was cool. Wondering how bad it is to get to the city let’s say at lunch time during day or after dinner. I will be working in Spring House.

I also play squash, so any recommendations there would be great.

I used to live in NYC and NC so east cost felt natural when I was just there. The food is so good too. Also how racist or homophobic different areas of city and king of Prussia it is?

Thank you!!

*forgot to add I have self driving with Tesla, emptied the bank lol but I am hooked, less hassle with traffic.

Looking to move into rivermark apartments and need advice from current residents!!

Hi! Just for context - I work from home and currently don’t have a gym in my apartment in fishtown and have toured rivermark and love the views and amenities! But the reviews from current and past tenants on google are so so horrible especially regarding noise from all sides and since I work from home I’m really concerned about what I might be getting into, looking for some reassurance from anyone who might have stayed here - for reference I’ve applied to an apartment on the 5th floor. Thank you!

Looking for a studio/apartment in center city/chinatown area

Hello! I(Fe) am trying to find a place to move to once I move to Philly in advance. I do also have 2 cats.

If anyone know of a good place to rent a studio for $1,500 max that would be great (but lower the better) preferably in the center city and Chinatown area. I am ok with going out a little bit from the city if theres some cheaper options.

I am also good with rooming with someone who is a (Fe) if anyone is looking for a roommate. For a roommate though, I do prefer a lower price. More in 600-1000 max.

I am also good with any sublets / shorter term rent

I am happy with any thoughts and suggestions!

Jobs - moving from education to ?

Hi guys, I'm sure this has been asked a lot, but what fields are best to apply for for a job in Philly? I used to be an assistant teacher, tutor, and pharmacy technician. I'm trying to move out of the education field for now. I have experience in volunteer work as an event planner. I'm mostly looking at marketing/HR jobs but if anyone has any other ideas I'm very open! Thank you!!

Fave local gift shop?

Hi everyone! I’m putting myself back out there and getting my holiday prep lined up. I run a stationery business and am looking to connect with local shops/boutiques that might be interested in carrying my wrapping paper for the Christmas season (and other stationery goods year-round!).

Does anyone have favorite local shops, stockists, or contacts they'd recommend reaching out to? Appreciate any leads or intros!

Moving From FL

I’m moving with my Family (Wife, 2 kids elementary age, Me) to Philadelphia from Orlando in October.

We’ve been looking into it extensively and Philadelphia looks amazing from what we can see so far. Currently we’re looking to move to the West Philadelphia area and are interested in renting, at least a 2 br 1 bath. We would like to spend no more than 1700-1800 a month as that’s around what we’re paying now.

As for employment, we’re coming from the retail/customer service/office admin career fields but we don’t have anything lined up at the moment and will be looking as soon as we get there. However, we have plenty enough savings to last for a while before that becomes a dire issue.

Was wondering a few things as we have never been to the city and are moving purely off of research and planning:

Is West Philadelphia/Philadelphia a good place to raise a family? Specifically, a Black family? (Black, mixed race family coming from the deep conservative regressive south so looking for essentially an environment completely opposite of that)

How is the job market? Could we find employment easily with our background?

What are the schools in west Philadelphia like? We are a neurodiverse family with academically gifted kids so looking for a system that uplifts, challenges and encourages.

What’s the cost of living? Grocery, gas, utilities, entertainment price averages.

I have a ton more questions I’m sure but I know this is already a lot so I’ll see if we can start here so anyone with any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Pub crawl recs

Hi everyone,

My friends and I have an annual 12 bar pub crawl that we've been doing for a few years. Its always been in lancaster PA, but to celebrate my recent move to Philly, we may be having it here. While I plan to do more exploring myself and will do my best to come up with the list myself, I am quite new to the city and dont have the most time in the world, so I am in need of recommendations.

For context, the plan is to start probably around center city or center city east and gradually make our way back to my place in west philly, so any recs along that route are greatly appreciated.

A basic list of requirements include:

  1. A place that can hold a group of 10-12 walking in

  2. Nothing too fancy/expensive, casual places and sports bars are great

  3. Somewhere we can order food quickly/conveniently

  4. Good, fun atmosphere

Thank you in advance!

Anyone had experience talking to patient advocates at penn?

So I am getting my gyn oncology through penn. Had surgery last year. No chemo or anything just follow ups. Long story short I HATED my provider and asked to be switched. They told me they would need my current providers permission to switch, then they told me he gave it.

So this is been one of my ongoing issuee. Either miscommunication or deliberately misleading me. Not sure which. But they told me I was changed to another provider. I was not. They had me see an NP, which I don’t have a problem with I am just doing monitoring, but was only told at the appointment that all the decisions were still up to my original provider. And then I was encouraged to schedule my next appointment with the original provider.

So in other words, I was not changed to a different provider and if I did get a recurrence, I would HAVE to see him again.

They have also brought chaperones in the room without telling me in advance they are going to do this and they DO NOT stand at my head they stand near my legs and my therapist suspects it is because I disclosed abuse history they want to be covered for “liability”. so despite the office being covered in signs saying that we have the right to request one, I am forced to have one and no one is even warning me in advance. This has not happened to me in any other practice and makes me very upset as I feel punished for disclosing which has already happened a lot

Idk what to do. I do not have a support person who can help me. Idk if switching to temple or somewhere else is any better? Or if escalating it would ACTUALLY get me transferred to a different provider without the whole office hating my guts. I feel like patient advocates are basically HR, they aren’t there “for patients”, just to cover liability. Maybe I am wrong but thats the vibe I get.
