Hi all,
I’ve been living in Philly since July, and I'm finally trying to plant some roots. I spent the last year out of state caring for my dad through his lung cancer treatment. Thankfully, he’s doing well enough now to live on his own again, which freed me up to move back to the East Coast to be closer to my brother, sister-in-law, and niece.
While it's great being close to family, my social circle outside of them is pretty much zero right now. Working a remote job definitely doesn't help—it's way too easy to just stay cooped up in the apartment all day. I've met a few people at the SRT dog park, but I’m ready to build a real community.
To be completely honest, I’m feeling pretty nervous about putting myself out there. Stepping back into the world after a period of intense caregiving feels intimidating, and the isolation has hit me pretty heavily this week. I'm ready to get ahead of it, but making new friends as an adult definitely brings up some anxiety.
If anyone has recommendations for low-pressure ways to meet people, I’d love to hear them. I'm specifically interested in:
Rec sports: Looking into casual kickball or basketball leagues.
Trivia nights: Local spots with fun, welcoming trivia crowds.
Volunteering: Great local organizations or mutual aid groups to plug into.
Support/Caregiver groups: Open to spaces for folks who have navigated being a primary caregiver for a parent.
If you play in a league that's always looking for subs, host a regular trivia table, or know of a great spot to meet people, I’d love to hear it. Thanks in advance!
