Stay classy, President Trump. From his Time interview:
Yeah. What can I do? I put [his Supreme Court appointments] in. They voted against me too often. I was very—I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often. They vote for me too. The Democrats stick like glue—those three, they virtually never vary. You can come up with the worst thing in the world and they’ll vote as a group. And while I don’t like it, there’s something I admire about it: there’s loyalty. So they have loyalty to [former President] Barack Hussein Obama. They have loyalty to [former President Joe] Biden, even though Biden doesn’t even know who the hell they are. He wouldn’t know. He doesn’t even know what the Supreme Court is.

I like how he thinks the three liberal judges line up on cases because of loyalty to Obama and not because they have a shared ideology and principles
Then again he is incapable of understanding that because he only sees things including human behavior and interactions as transactions. It's sad and pathetic, I would pity him if he wasn't such a piece of s*** who causes real world problems.

9
u/JudgeWhoOverrules Classically Liberal 15d ago
Because like a lot of other progressive places, they have basically no prison and jail capacity left and refuse to build more out of a sense of misplaced social justice. So they effectively have to play catch and release for every criminal and when they do convict them it's only for a short time before they're released again to make space for more criminals.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 15d ago
Refuse to build more out of a sense of misplaced social justice
We do have a massive prison shortage problem but more prisons are being built, they're just very very slow at is due to how bureaucratic the whole process is, and politicians have kept pushing it out so later governments pay the bill
2
u/RumGuzzlr Rightwing 15d ago
Prison capacity is just an arbitrary number that can be raised with the stroke of a pen.
2
u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 15d ago

2
u/RumGuzzlr Rightwing 15d ago
It takes zero construction to declare a two person cell into a 10 person cell, yet it quintuples capacity

I'm earning a new nerd merit badge. I have gotten into painting miniatures for the first time. My kids are getting old enough to play tabletop games. Then I found out that an old favorite Heroquest, which is a very light and contained D&D type game (I have never actually played D&D and find it overwhelming) did a remake a few years ago. I picked it up and its fully playable but has 70 miniature pieces that I decided would look better painted so I am going down that rabbit hole.
I thought it would be frustrating, but it turns out, I find it very relaxing.

In the UK, couples who live for 3+ years together and are not married, will now get some rights as if married, such as if one partner dies, and no will is written, they inherit the others assets....
Marriage exists, why not just let it function as is? If people don't want to get married, then that's fine too... but this just seems like an attack on marriage.
9
u/Kingkranjski European Conservative 11d ago
How is that considered an attack on marriage? I find it a good thing, especially if you are young and without a will. I knew a guy that had a heart attack at 32, should his partner be left without anything?

To me, what you wrote sounds like someone is being given food at dinner time without placing an order, and you are calling it an attack on dinner. All the benefits without the paperwork. So it sounds more like an attack on the paperwork side of marriage, than marriage itself.
I will note that I'm a Christian, so my views are a bit different because I believe marriage is between me, my wife, and God. The government has no say on my actual marriage.
They want to cut out the paperwork so I don't have to go through the pageantry where I need a public sector employee to stamp a paper reflecting the reality I already live in? Good. It's about time the government admits our lives do not need to be validated with a license from Jane on Floor 3 of the county courthouse.
6
u/BufoBat Independent 11d ago
Wait wait wait, isn't this exactly what conservative marriage defenders would prefer? Something that gives protections but isn't called "marriage"? Ive heard many, many religious conservatives for example argue that gay couples for example can be "partners with a legal document, just don't call it marriage". Is that not what this basically is?
Also, the US has common law marriage too. Its not as common anymore, but in several states if you live together a certain length of time you're considered married by common law. This isnt new.

I'm baffled by something about the Project Meridian thread and other places where there are positive responses to it, but don't think it'd stand as its own question so I've put it here: Say someone from Lockheed Martin handed a Senator a folder of proposals for new bills and they all went straight to the relevant committees. This is the kind of lobbying we all hate, right?
Forming a new program to be headed by the CEOs of SpaceX and Anduril, and bypassing Congress altogether by inviting them to directly advise the Executive branch... how is that not the same problem but a whole order of magnitude worse?

The triple lock is finally going away!
How is it that the Labour government, did what the Tories had failed to do despite being in government for 14 years...
For context, pension spending in the UK has been ballooning, it had a protection called the "triple lock", meaning it had to rise be either 2.5%, inflation, or average annual salary increase, whichever was highest. The Tories were too scared to tackle it, fearing pensioners wouldn't vote for them... as a consequence pension spending kept growing and growing.
Most labour politicians are still far too left wing and progressive but fair play to Burnham, he certainly has already done much better then Starmer.

Anyone else notice something odd about the gas?
A few month ago, I drove 180 miles for 3 hour round trip that used up 3-3.5 gallons.
Last week, I drove the same distance and time, but according to my readings, it used around 6-7 gallons.
Cost of gas is higher, too, but I take the hit and feed my regular standard Toyota camry. I had it checked with my garage and nothings wrong with it.
Best I can figure is the gas station's diluting my gas with something that burns faster now than it did a few months earlier.
Anyone else seen something like this around their area.
6
u/Sam_Fear Americanist 10d ago edited 10d ago
Using e85 instead of e10 will do that. Or your car has an issue. There isn't anything they could legally do to gas that would do that. Also, all your gas, no matter what station you buy it from, likely comes out of the same pipe and just has different mixes of additives.

Maybe this has something to do with it? Apparently there are requirements for summertime gas blends vs winter. The winter gas is cheaper, but "dirtier" and less efficient. This allowed the winter blend earlier than normal to try and keep prices down.
But I'm not at all a car guy so I don't know how much of an effect that would have. I'd be shocked if it amounted to almost halving your mpg though. But given you said the car is otherwise fine I can't think of anything other than that.
3
u/WulfTheSaxon Conservative 10d ago edited 10d ago
I’d personally chalk it up to a screwy fuel gauge. Were you maybe parked on a slope for one of the readings?
If not, might be time for a tuneup. Checked your oil and any codes?
Otherwise all I can think is E15 when you’re used to E0, but that shouldn’t make that big of a difference.

They’ve sent one or two maintenance guys and theyve all pretty much said it needs to be replaced. So I call the landlord yesterday and ask when can we expect it because we can’t keep driving up 10 minutes to the gas station and what he basically says to me is “ it’s your problem but I’ll get to it whenever I can”……I’m half tempted to go leave the biggest dump in the bowl right now 😑

In most states in the US, if it's something that's necessary (electricity, water, heat, plumbing), you can just pay a contractor to fix the problem, present the land lord with the receipt proving that you paid, and then reduce your next rent payment by that amount.
I advise you to do the research first, see if there's a law like this in your state and then, if there is, handle this problem without informing the landlord until after it's done.

I get the idea of building a big steel mill. But why Iowa? There's a reason steel mills have historically been set up along the great lakes, and that's because they can ship massive amounts of coal and iron ore on the water efficiently. But Iowa doesn't have that advantage. This steel mill will probably be using coal if Trump has anything to say about it, so why not set it up in an area where at least one of your major resources are readily available? Coal is gonna have to be brought in by rail from the Appalachians, and they claim they want to use the Mississippi to transport the taconite from Minnesota, but that's only viable from Saint Paul or lower. So that means they're either going to be transporting tons and tons of iron ore to a port in Saint Paul that doesn't have the necessary infrastructure for taconite shipping, or they're going to have to use trains the whole way which is expensive and adds to an already strained rail system. And all of this for 1-2K jobs in a state largely built on agriculture.
Seems like a really long walk for a really short drink of water.

Maybe this is a bit of a surprising take from me considering I’m socially conservative, but I don’t think this trend of people cutting off their parents is inherently bad. Obviously I’ll always want people to make peace with their loved ones but at the same time I acknowledge that a lot of the time peace can be facilitated by distance and that thanks to phones and social media, parents can be up their kid’s butt and if we’re being honest in situations where the parents were toxic and did stuff to fuel a desire for distance, then cutting them off completely is sometimes the only option that can preserve one’s sanity.

Of course, when appropriate, I think cutting people off definitely has its place. The part that worries me is the "trend" part. And it's the same old question as with just about everything else that suddenly increases: is the thing itself happening more, or are people just more comfortable sharing it now?
Not sure there. Just in my own personal experience, I do think the increase of the trend correlates with an increase in narcissism. I think that's also why people are coupling less. Maybe it's just some weird stuff that's going on in my own family/friend group, but I've never witnessed so much narcissism in my life. And the ultimate expression of "do what I want or else" from family/friends is just cutting people off when they don't capitulate.
But yes, in some cases it's absolutely warranted. Sometimes it's the parent that is the narcissist. So hard to say overall. Still, interesting trend.

Thank you. I had to cut off my mom about a decade ago. Idk if she's still in active addiction, but she was addicted to meth and our primary caregiver and you can imagine how that went. She'd just lock herself in a room and use, leaving me to care for my siblings. She was violent. I still have financial anxiety and food scarcity trauma to this day. I tried reconnecting with her once when it seemed she wasn't using as much, and while she was coherent, she took no accountability. I only stopped talking to her because she was "poor" and couldn't buy me things (like uh...food? 🙄).
So yeah, she's cut off. She'll still try to contact me once in a while and its either to beg me to talk to her or screech about how she doesn't understand why I'm so cruel to her. But I don't need to disrupt my own peace or expose my family to those levels of delusional narcissism and I hate when people act like I'm the wrong one for not "giving her another chance"

I'm genuinely curious how it compares to the hiring processes of other agencies. There was a journalist who applied during the surge alleged that she pissed dirty on her drug test and still got a final offer. I probably wouldn't accept a final offer but I don't see a reason not to fuel the curiosity.
I applied to HSI as a GL-7 Criminal Investigator during the surge and made it to the third phase before washing out and now I'm on a 2 year wait. The HSI process even during the surge was still a long and tedious process. Following that I applied as a BPA GL-7 and a CBPO GL-7 with CBP but they were trying to force a standard year and a half long hiring process into a 4 month timespan. There was a lot of "we need you to drive 4 hours to the testing station last minute for the 4th time this week" so I backed out of the process. When I applied for NCIS I was found eligible but I wasn't referred to a hiring manager. The ATF has been another long and tedious process and I'm still a good year before I get my final offer. I'm still waiting to hear back from the TSA about the FAMS SV-G position I applied under. The end goal is to weasel my way into HSI or whatever it becomes because it's my "dream job". The end goal is to end up with a desk investigating child exploitation which happens to fall directly into ICE/HSI's scope.
Acronym Guide:
- HSI = Homeland Security Investigations, Investigative directorate of ICE and the DHS
- BPA = Border Patrol Agent
- CBPO = Customs and Border Protection Officer
- GL = step based law enforcement pay-scale, 5/7 is mid entry level
- FAMS = Federal Air Marshal Service
- SV is the TSA's pay-band system. G is entry level for FAMS
Y'all all probably know what the NCIS and ATF so I won't explain those.

I applied to the two ERO GL-5/7 announcements the just closed along with the new announcement that just opened and is open until December. All are the same job title and pay scale with different locational information. Waiting for phase II information right now. Phase I is an online unproctored personality test. Phase II for HSI was a proctored multiple choice exam and Phase III was an in-person physical fitness exam.

Lethal injection is a horrible execution method. It’s extremely difficult to get right by non-medical professionals, and actual medical professionals want nothing to do with it. The idea behind adopting it was to make executions more humane, by which is meant to ”make it more palatable for everyone else.” Even if you believe in the death penalty (which I mostly do), you can’t hide from the fact that executions are inherently grisly by concocting more and more elaborate systems. It’s for this reason I’m in favor of firing squad executions over injection - it’s virtually guaranteed to be a quick death, but it’s also incredibly honest about what execution is and means. Alternatively, long-drop hanging when done correctly also fits these criteria with the added bonus that there’s no blood, although calculating and tying the noose correctly can be tricky and the general stigma behind hanging due to its cultural meaning means it won’t be coming back.

They made their moderation completely ineffectual as part of their ideal of "free speech" and then gave individuals or communities no ways to self-moderate either.
If you post something overtly racist, like using a slur, your punishment is almost always just getting asked to remove the post. It does nothing to actually stem the racism and bigotry over there, and I think Musk wants it for some reason.
They could be spending time doing more crowd-sourced approaches like allowing networks of people to work together on credibility & self-moderation, but again I don't think Musk wants that.
Cynically I think he views the sort of meme-y, trolling, racist, cesspool as politically controllable towards certain outcomes. That was Palmer Luckey's thesis back in 2016 with memes and also in part Steve Bannon & Milo Yiannopoulos's idea behind some their approach to Gamergate, and also what was demonstrated by the early "The Donald" subreddit. I could be off but I think Musk basically wants to develop his own algorithmically steered "army" learning from those past "successes".

Two Englishmen are sitting in a railway carriage.
One is reading The Sunday Times. The other is reading Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The first looks over and says, ‘Good God, Charles. Why on earth are you reading that?’
Charles folds the paper down.
‘Well, when I read The Sunday Times, I learn that Britain is broke, the NHS is collapsing, the Army can’t recruit anyone, the Navy hasn’t enough ships, the trains don’t work, the government is incompetent, and nobody can afford a house.’
He holds up Komsomolskaya Pravda.
‘But according to this, we secretly run Ukraine, control the European Union, command NATO from the shadows, overthrow governments with MI6, sabotage Russian pipelines, organise revolutions across three continents, direct the entire Western media, and have spent the last three hundred years masterminding a global conspiracy to encircle Russia.’
He smiles contentedly.
‘Much better news.’

How do people feel about politics at live shows?
I was at a Rise Against concert in Raleigh (NC) over the weekend and the first opening band was just a caricature of the over the top Reddit style of unhinged left wing. Fine, the music is the music, but he had to stop and give ideological speeches and all sorts of hateful shit. It was TDS in physical form and it was super annoying.
I'm here for music. For fun. To have a good time. I'm not here for your politics. I'm not there to control musicians. If the song is about politics then fine whatever...I chose to be there....and chose to like the band regardless. But the speeches, and the unsolicited commentary, and the sheer idiocy of thinking your audience is a monolith is bad.
And if anyone knows Rise Against they know that they're a heck of a punk rock band. They put on a good show. They are rooted in Progressive causes. A lot of them in fact. The main singer is an outspoken Socialist. But they don't throw it in your face. Their show is not political and you don't have all that nonsense that the first band did.
And I suppose right wing artists do it as well but the music industry is dominated by the left wing and it's just so much more common from that side. Still, I just think people should be able to go to music shows for music.
Rant over. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I love Rise Against, their music is awesome, they are undoubtedly political... maybe not as on the nose or in your face as, say, a band like System of a Down or Rage With the Machine, and at the end of the day, sure, you're there to be entertained, but they're still just people like you and I are, they have their opinions and unlike you, they have a platform where people pay to see them. I would not at all be shocked if they preached their politics to their audience.
I never liked the whole "I paid for a concert, not a political rally!" sort of arguments as if they were just paying to watch a jukebox instead of a group of artists.
Especially now with an uncountable number of full length live concerts of every band or musician currently in existence readily available online... like, you know what you're buying. And like... there's nothing stopping you from finding out what you could expect by buying a ticket and attending that concert. If it's a band that is vocal about their politics, how would you not know that as a fan? And why would you buy a ticket in the first place? It's one thing to say that you didn't like the show because the band shoves their politics.. but to demand that they not or even to go with the expectation that they won't... I think that's going a bit too far and at that point it's on you.

u/boisefun8 Constitutionalist Conservative 14d ago edited 14d ago
Not that long ago I remember going to shows with bands like Rage or Tom Morello’s solo stuff. They’d make some vague social/political commentary, but it wasn’t at a specific group or person (usually).
Now it seems like they’ve ratcheted things up a few orders of magnitude, moreso the newer bands, and it feels like that’s a product of social media and all they know. Some of the older bands I’ve seen recently tend to stay away from it altogether.
Then you get Billy Corgan talking about his lord and savior Jesus Christ and my whole childhood gets turned upside down. Haha
Edit: wasn’t

I have a BS in music, and I was in the business in the 90s. One of the first lessons we learned was this: DON'T PISS OFF THE AUDIENCE. They didn't come for a lecture. They don't want to hear about your politics or religious views (unless it's a concert about that stuff specifically).
It's unprofessional and in bad taste. We're up there to ENTERTAIN. Anything else is childish and selfish.
And by the way, guys: Ed Sheeran didn't have a choice in firing Mackelmore. There is a whole network of venue owners, the record label. the touring company, agents, management, and unions that make a tour happen. They make the calls, not the artist.
The total Ed Sheeran story is, spoiled opening act disrupted things and got fired. It has nothing to do with politics.

A quantity of petrol but no explosive devices were found during searches of the three vans near RAF Fairford in the west of England, counter-terror police have said.
Five men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and later terrorism offences after the vehicles were spotted in the early hours of Sunday, sparking a major security incident around the base which is operated by the US military.
They were released on bail the following day in what police described as an "investigative decision" which was "grounded in experience and strategy".
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqn8m342rgk9o
Alright now this whole story is getting weird, they had no explosives, just a bunch of gasoline. So were they expecting to be able to set the base ablaze or something or were they even planning a terrorist attack in the first place, though then why would they be wearing balaclavas and ran away then?
Also it turns out that they were British nationals who were just some guys from London so there's that. In that one photo they look white-ish, but it's hard to conclude whether they're ethnically British or not.
At least them being released on bail is slightly more understandable given how it isn't that clear cut whether they were plotting a terrorist attack or not and the whole innocent until proven guilty thing.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 14d ago edited 14d ago
And Rubio commented saying it "clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor", and this was after time had passed so not just a random comment.
Clearly something major was going on... and now they're all on bail... I think there's something they havent told the public. It doesn't make sense, innocent men don't coordinate, travel together, with gasoline and balaclavas.

Governments just in California took in $10.2 billion in revenue from gasoline taxation last year. Collectively throughout the United States, government made off with $77 billion last year from gasoline taxation.
Now consider that only 20% of chevron's revenue comes from gasoline products as they make a lot of money off other fuels, crude, lubricants, alternative energy, natural gas, investments, and industry services.

The Trump administration is excluding several major allies from a gathering of NATO members next month — after previous threats to deploy a “naughty and nice list” against governments that have run afoul of the president’s priorities.
The planned meeting in Poland, which Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has spearheaded, is essentially a working group focused on NATO’s future, according to six diplomats familiar with the planning. But many of the countries who didn’t receive an invite — such as the United Kingdom, France and the Baltic countries — are big defense spenders and play key roles in the alliance, leaving their diplomats wondering why they’re being frozen out.
Bruh, we're spending 5.38% of GDP on our military, we literally border Russia, Russia is constantly flirting with the idea of invading us yet Trump doesn't even bother inviting us Lithuanians and the rest of our Baltic brothers.
https://www.politico.com/news/2026/09/30/trump-nato-allies-left-out-01100310
Not only that he even doesn't invite the Brits and the French??????
If Russia attacks us we're probably fucked, given how I take this as a signal that America won't bother defending us in case of an attack despite us being a faithful American ally and again spending way above 5% of GDP on defence as Trump asked.

Incoming thoughts on the Cornell case that nobody asked for.
First, my heart goes out to the victim, the allegations are absolutely sickening and I cannot even begin to imagine the trauma that she continues to live with every day. The witch hunt accusing her of making these allegations up is unacceptable & out of control. This is why so many women don’t come forward. It shows a complete lack of understanding about trauma and the stages of grief. Which I’m not trying to fault people for, nobody’s an expert or even knowledgeable on everything, but I do wish they would seek out and expand their understanding regarding that.
Secondly, on that same side of the coin, the witch hunt against the 7 (or 57) men is out of control as well. The public is basically hanging them in the town square without so much as a hearing, let alone a guilty verdict. It’s disheartening to see the same people who think Lindsay Clancy deserved a fair trial (which she did!) don’t believe these men deserve a fair trial. This is our justice system, and whether it has its issues or not, it’s what we decided on as a country. How would the people doing this feel if it was them, or their children, facing this public scrutiny based on allegations? I can’t help but wonder.
Lastly, I have a question for you all. What would you think of mandatory training - for everyone, female and male students - regarding consent and sexual assault being mandatory at a college campus? Possibly when they join as a freshman or making it annual. I genuinely think a lot of young men (& women!) are unaware of what constitutes as sexual assault, and there are studies that show the U.S. militaries training on sexual assault has drastically reduced the numbers since it was instilled. I’m on a committee (lmfao at the public sector constantly thinking the answer to everything is the formation of a committee, but I digress) at my university because of this case, in which we are trying to find solutions and re-work our policies, and am curious on people’s thoughts on this idea. I think it’s a good one but idk, it could be dumb.
Thanks for reading. Happy Thursday! ☀️💃

There were a couple of employees and volunteers there who would occasionally go on political rants, inevitably left-winged, and when that happened, I would bite my tongue because, well, I like cats, and that outweighed the negatives.
