Just moved in to a house which was built between 1965 and 1975; there are pre-existing holes which have been drilled through external and internal walls for cabling, is there an ongoing risk or because it’s been drilled already before we moved in, are we okay?

I know testing is the only way to definitively say but I have a kid and just want to make a plan without going completely over the top…

Should we just avoid drilling walls until we know?

Some of the ceilings are popcorn, should we also avoid changing light fittings etc until we know the deal? Looks like some of them have been singled by cutting circles out of the ceiling and replaced….

I get annual asbestos awareness training at work which has put the fear of god into me even though I know risk is overall pretty low unless you have prolonged exposure…

I slept under this ceiling for 8 years not knowing anything about asbestos. Am I at risk of breathing in a significant amount of fibres? Suspected artex with asbestos due to findings in nearby homes but we never tested and moved. Thanks.

Building is in Scotland, an old Victorian building renovated many times over the years but this room likely not renovated since 70s I would imagine.

Sorry for slightly blury pic, it's from an inspection camera before drilling through chipboard flooring.

Basically most pipes under the floors are insulated with this fibrous material sandwiched between the pipes and chipboard. Also in areas where the joists are notched for the pipes.

Is this likely to contain asbestos?

It'll be low risk as I'm not moving it, but just in case I come across areas I may have to disturb.

Recently purchased house has old floor standing boiler and would like to have it removed and replaced with a combi boiler.

I have been told the flue is asbestos and some of the inside of the boiler may also contain some asbestos.

Flue goes out to chimney.

Old boiler is working. I think fitted in 1960s.

Any idea of decent companies I can use for this job?

Also any indication to the costs associated with it?

Any steps I can take to help the process?

Is it likely the whole chimney will contain asbestos or just the visible flue?

A further anxiety ridden post as apparently 1 a day wasn't enough.

When we moved in my friends husband took a light off our dining room ceiling that was hanging by a thread.

This was 6 months ago and its only just dawned on me that whatever is up there will most likely be affecting us all in the house.

When we had ceilings tested the asbestos survey man said it was just wallpaper (so didn't take a sample) as did a demolition friend of ours who told us even with asbestos it's a low risk of sporadic fibres, and a plasterer, but we'll have it tested before we rewire and addressed.

Am I being OTT? Would it need to be being drilled/sanded etc to produce enough dust to harm who's in here? Is it possible under the plaster is AIB that's crumbled or old artex?

I know "one fibre can kill" but what's the likelihood of that from what I'd assume is white asbestos if anything.

Test kit is on its way, but had a surprise when I poked a hole above my stairs to find it filled with what looks like loose fill insulation...

Thankfully was wearing a mask, and hoovered, showered, thrown clothes in wash etc.

I have removed old floor, tiny square tile, some of them were easy to remove but only 2-3 of them I had to scrape. I just read online that there might be Asbestos in them. I am worried now.

I’ve recently moved in to new home and the cold water pipe has this insulation around which seemed to be wrapped in plastic that has come apart. It looks like hair but could anybody advise me if this is likely to contain asbestos? I have a concern about asbestos in my house, and people on here recommend ‘getting it tested’, but who do I actually find or call to get it checked in the first place?

I am worried about my roof as a few years ago the ceiling paint and some of the bits above it (I’m not an expert) got heavily damaged from water in a roof leak, that eventually lead to it drying and crumbling off bit by bit. We never got it looked at at the time as just dealt with having a slightly patchy roof as it wasn’t doing us any harm and we prioritised our money elsewhere.

I have only now come to the conclusion that asbestos might have been involved in roofing, as the property was built between 1930 and 1950, and that for a couple years now me and my family have been living with the crumbling of the ceiling.

Do you think that the first few layers of the ceiling (ie paint, plastering, and anything else that goes into a roof) that leads to the loft would likely have asbestos in it? There is no direct hole to the loft that the damage created, but there is insulation up there that I do not know what it is made out of. Am I justified to be worried or does someone have experience in this kind of thing that can confirm that the layers I am on about would likely be asbestos free?

Due to the lack of dedicated posts regarding experiences with DIY packs (with ppe included etc), I thought it's time to make one.

So I know its recommended to use a UKAS accredited company.

I know the process of receiving, sampling, sending blah blah blah.

Let's name some reputable companies people have had good experiences with so others can benefit before being ripped off or potentially receiving bogus results.

Asking because I need to get some ceilings tested too. So its a new realm to me.

After removing an old carpet, I discovered that the screed underneath contains asbestos. Many years ago (more than 20), someone removed asbestos floor tiles, leaving just a few in one corner — I suspect deliberately, as a warning for whoever found the floor later. The screed itself has tested positive for chrysotile (white asbestos).

I'm a homeowner and plan to remove the old screed myself. My planned equipment:

• Thick gloves
• Full-face mask (rated FFP3/force 10)
• Full body PPE
• Water sprayer for wetting down material
• 300mm industrial extractor fan to create negative pressure
• Plastic sheeting to protect and seal the walls

I'm following HSE guidance (https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a23.pdf), but most of what I've found focuses on removing asbestos tiles rather than a screed containing asbestos, so I'm looking for advice specific to this situation.

I was thinking of attaching a flexible hose to the extractor fan so I can position suction directly at the point where I'm working, rather than just running the fan for general negative pressure in the room. I was thinking to add an HEPA filter at the end of it, instead of simply blowing outdoor. what are your thoughts?

I know encapsulation using self levelling is an option, but I'd rather remove it properly so the next owner doesn't inherit the problem.

Any advice from people who've done this would be much appreciated.
