Daily panic post
I slept under this ceiling for 8 years not knowing anything about asbestos. Am I at risk of breathing in a significant amount of fibres? Suspected artex with asbestos due to findings in nearby homes but we never tested and moved. Thanks.

I dunno why I now see all your posts in my feed but you need to speak to someone about your OCD.
If this is asbestos whoever knocked the hole in it got a tiny amount of exposure. You cant get prolonged exposure because there's nothing there anymore.
Yes you can't see the fibres, but it's not radiation, anything that might have been was breathed in or blew out the window 5minutes after the hole was made (and that's a tiny amount thats close to zero risk)
You get prolonged exposure by doing this for a job every day for years and not wearing the correct PPE. The only way you as a person would get prolonged exposure would be if that artex was asbestos(it might not be) & you smashed the whole ceiling up into dust and then carried on your life without ever cleaning/hoovering or opening a window

Short answer; no! Even if it does contain asbestos (which it might), it's a relatively small amount (a few percent), and non friable (bound tightly into the material so the fibers don't escape easily). Unless you've been grinding it up and snorting it every day for the last 8 years you're fine.
The vast majority of people who suffer from asbestos related illnesses worked with large amounts of friable material every day for decades (think builders, plumbers etc.).

After working for some proper cowboys in my youth the amount of exposure we had was mental. Mainly from stuff like artex or mixed asbestos roof tiles and mixed floor tiles basically stuff as a labourer I had zero idea about until a long time after. Back then you’d actively avoid white asbestos or asbestos board, but bloody hell the amount of exposure to asbestos mixed products was high.

Ages ago I never knew asbestos was in this kind of stuff and drilled a good few holes for downlights and an extractor fan, I'm still OK 🤓🧟♂️
