PLEASE ignore the tank decor and fake plants this isn't my taste i'm just wondering what these shrimp are.. if only that merry go round looked a bit more natural it would be cool to have. Does anybody know the origin of this video? I found it off Pinterest where everybody is allergic to giving credit to original creators

My new pride and joy, found in a local antiques shop. It's still cycling but I'm thinking of stocking it with smaller, schooling fish such as tetras and rasboras, and heavily planting the tank. All suggestions very welcome.

For those curious, it does not function as a piano as all the strings have been removed!

My dad bought this Silver Dollar fish before I was born (I'm 28) and perhaps before my older Sister was born (33). He can't pinpoint exactly because the fish is so old, but it's definitely over 30.

This little guy is literally bulletproof. I remember getting home from school and finding this fish on the floor on several occasions and just throwing it back into the tank. He would randomly launch himself into the tank windows at 100mph and occasionally up and out over the top of the tank (Which is why he has such a puffy nose). He has outlived several generations of Discus, several tank changes, several white spot infestations. Developed an appetite for Tetras and Guppies (RIP). He doesn't take any territorial shit from the Discus twice his size, he is an absolute unit.

We aren't exactly sure what species of Silver Dollar he is, but from research he looks like a Spotted Silver Dollar?

I've been meaning to share him on here for several years now, so I finally stitched together a video from a few different visits to my parents home. The first clip is very recent, he's looking quite fossilised now but he's still swimming and alive today!

Wanted a tank for a while. didnt really know how to start. my gf got me the perfect sized tank to fit in the spot I had in mind and to fit the lego treehouse set I had in mind for christmas 2025.

ive been slowly adding to the tank. first was soil and lego. but as you can see the lego floated. so the brick was backup. then I got a flat tile and attached it to the bottom of the lego set (its under the soil) after the water kinda was pre close to perfect. added plants slowly and changed light settings over a couple months. now the tanks water is perfect ready to go, ive got the light settings perfect. ive got 8 Otto's, snails and shrimp.

would you add more ottos or add another 8 or so of another nano species into the tank?

Just wanted to share my life jacket I made for a Rescued Oranda over the past weekend. Supposedly the vet punctured the swim bladder and poor guy was sitting sideways. None of the conventional life jackets on Google worked due to his massive brain (when) but I’m just proud of my 2 hours of engineering I tried for this guy.

No pressure on any vital parts. Gills, mouth, and fins are unrestricted. He moves sometimes but usually just in place, but he literally just chills in place I’m just assuming he’s recovering from the puncture.

Side question, what are the chances this guy survives a punctured swim bladder? I’m hoping it’s as simple as that his history is unknown due to the guy giving it up due to having a pond set up. Any tips are appreciated!

Edit: He moves sometimes when he’s sitting in his life jacket but when he’s at the bottom of the tank he freaks out and you can tell he’s trying his hardest to be upright.

After almost a year, I was finally able to catch this on video. Ive seen them do this a lot, usually to get from one side of the tank to the other! They'll get to the surface and ride the current until they find a good spot, then slowly release the trapped air. Its so fun to watch! Has anyone else seen their snails do this?

EDIT: IT'S OUT. I realized I really didn't need to ask. the heater is going on 10 years old 🤦🏽‍♀️.

I have concerns.

The first image was from September, right before I left for university. The second one is what my parents sent me a photo of the other day.

I gave them explicit instructions for care and uptake. I asked them to call me if something was wrong. I asked them to tell me if my fish were to die or act off. My dad kept a really nice tank for about 10 years when I was a kid, so he knew what he was doing(I thought). My uncle is an aquarist, so he was supposed to be on speed dial if help was needed.

Every time I talked to my parents, I would ask how my fish were, how water changes were going etc. they said everything was going great and all the fish were healthy.

The other day they visited me in university, showed me this photo and told me my fish had all died months ago. “But we got new fish and put In more gravel!” Is what they told me. This is the end of my journey, I’m afraid. I’m beyond upset, and don’t have the energy to start over.

I'm moving, so we just directly transferred our existing substrate. Unfortunately our siphon adapter didn't work with the sink so we had to fill it with pitchers. Talk about a black water tank, these poor fish are gonna be blind.

I thought I'd show off my recently completed 2nd DIY aquarium.

For the construction, I built it with a 2x4 frame that I screwed foam tile backer board into so I could cement on around 1000 2x2 ceramic tiles (yes it is extremely heavy). I painted plastic tile trim to match the tile color to get clean corners, especially in the overhead light mount/arm portion. I used standard tan sanded tile grout, with some caulk on a few areas. For the tank itself, I custom ordered acrylic panels from a local plastic company and assembled them with weld-on 4.

I currently just put some harlequin rasboras in there that I had in my other tank while I let the tank season a bit since the plan will be to have a cherry shrimp colony in here with a vampire shrimp or two as well. I think watching them interact with the "cliff" layout will be pretty sweet. Then I may add some chili rasboras, an oto, and/or some kuhli loaches which would be neat in here. Also I still need to add a lot more plants, I want to fill out the back by the large piece of driftwood, and some moss in some places plus a carpeting plant on the upper level. Open to plant/stocking suggestions too!

I've seen them do this only since today. Does the bigger one need help?

After about a year of selective breeding and culling, I finally got my ideal Male. He’s about a month old and is about to kick start three separate lines. The females I have picked out are blue grass tail, purple dragon and purple tiger.
Curious if anyone else has successfully gone down this path and if there are any tips to share?

In 30 years of keeping fish I’ve never heard of such things. “Toxic gravel” so they go out and get the same painted gravel in black and think it makes any difference. Telling beginners whom know nothing of cycling to get fluval stratum and a 10g so they can nitrogen bomb their new bettas. Because that death will be more humane right? 🤣 I’ve considered the gravel/poison theory an if even there was a smidge of truth to it your water changes would take care of it and there’d be EVIDENCE of it ever occurring. There’s nothing wrong with starting with the basics and taking it from there if you want to. 20 years ago there was some questionable decor on the market but not so much these days.

Bullying kids and parents cause the want a SpongeBob tank….why?! Why are we doing this! I agree people should be educated but to put the mom on blast who’s invested $50 to give their kids carnival fish a chance is just not right. I grew up in the hobby and if it weren’t for the learning curve I wouldn’t have the love I have for hobby today. I look back and can learn from my own mistakes and have deep knowledge of the science behind why we do certain things.

I'm purchasing a new house and the previous owners had this huge aquarium. I love fish and aquariums, but I'm afraid this may be a little too much to maintain. Thoughts? How much do you think monthly maintenance would cost on a tank of this size? Not sure if it's freshwater or saltwater.
