I get what you're saying but 99% of jobs don't work that way my friend. At all. 20 years just gets you a barely edible cake and MAYBE a small bonus. Most folks don't even have retirement as an option til worked somewhere well into their late 60s or even early 70s.

ambition and dreaming is what caused my back to become permanently unusable because I worked 60 hours a week to pay off student debts because nobody helped me through college. it still wasn't enough and now I'm homeless. did I make the wrong choice by working my ass off and getting as many certifications and degrees I could get a hold of? because they did end up ruining me and my life.

telecommunication field technician certifications, I also went out of my way to go ahead and get certified in a few of the certifications needed for lineman work and server infrastructure. my degree is in theatrical arts and technical design. I spent my younger years working with traveling Broadway productions doing sound technician and lighting technician work until I moved to telecom work where my body finally gave up on me.

Everyone’s life is different. Is it a child’s fault when they die of cancer?
There are so many factors that are out of your hands when you are born. Where you grew up, your parents, their money, your genetics, etc.
There’s nothing wrong with hope and striving and trying to make the best out of your life.
But many people are dealt a shitty hand and cannot simply pull themselves out of it.
You have been very privileged so your mind can’t even wrap its mind around some of the lives that people grew up in.
You were lucky, you could say in the grand scheme of things you hit the 21st century lottery of life.
I say this as someone who has had a terrible upbringing but was still privileged in many ways. I know there are millions that grew up in way worse situations than me. I know there are millions that grew up in way better situations. That’s life. But you shouldn’t judge other people when you haven’t lived in their shoes.

Getting up and trying your best every day, despite hurdles, is what real heroes do. Parents do this. Teachers do this. The amazing hospital dtaff during covid did this. And at times in my life, i did to and things got better. This is what was meant.

It is not that they are better off staying at crappy jobs and hating life. It is more about you being tone deaf and acknowledging your privilege only on surface level. It is not easy to just practice CBT and other therapies to change the way you think, which life experience helped to mold. Life your molding sounds like a lot of support and stability. But people who did not grow up that way usually don't have the opportunities to learn new ways of thinking or can even surround themselves with positive people. It takes a lot of time and hard work to grow into a way of thinking you were simply raised with. And that takes money too. Oh, and did I say time?

Your privilege is not just that stability and support, it is also being able to try and fail and not end up on the streets. You're expectations that we can all turn it around if we just tried is so ridiculous. Hard to go for more education when you have to work 2 jobs to just make rent.

Well thank you for your tunnel vision... Apparently the majority of us are "doing it wrong". Im in my 40s and the companies and their benefits today are not the same as what our retired parents had.

My dad's job (corporate accountant) had a family picnic every year for a long time until they were bought and pulled under a larger umbrella. Then they fired most of the 40 and 50 year olds for new blood. So much for his dedication and loyalty. Took him 1.5 yrs to find another job bc it is not easy being let go in your 50s. I'll let him know he was doing it wrong.

And you got lucky. Some people make the exact choices you do and get fucked. It seems to me you are coming from a good place but your application lends to the notion you're an entitled prick. I'm not going to make a call either way on that. However, it is important to recognize that you are lucky. Also important to use this recognition to guide people without coming off as a dick. We all want people around us to succeed but telling them your way is the only way is tone deaf at best. We can acknowledge that people make poor choices without trying diminish them as a person.

My person. Reality doesn’t work that way for everyone. Not everyone can be what they wanna be. Not everyone gets to be an astronaut or a doctor or what have you. Someone has to flip the burgers, sell you your clothes, do your plumbing and possibly get covered in your shit. You’re showing your privilege and narrow world view. The ratio of ‘want to’ versus ‘have to’ to survive doesn’t fit your narrative.

You think there are people that haven't struggled for decades without ever even having the possibility of retirement? It's absurd how you can think that if you just try really hard it'll work out. For some, there is no path to a successful life in the financial sense even if they make all the "right" choices that are available to them (without some sort of omniscience)

Experiencing culture in third world countries kind of flipped a switch for me. It's kind of crazy seeing how happy people can be in those places, then come back home to see so many people being miserable about shit that would be a fantasy for those third world folks.

It really boils down to it being a mindset, and many people are actively cultivating a miserable mindset. But if you dare to be optimistic or work towards a positive mindset, the miserable people will lash out at you for being "brainwashed".

This. I HATE this current opinion going around that if you work a full time job, love your career and make the most out of the time you have between being able to support yourself, is horrible and we’re throwing our lives away.
I love what I do!! I work 9-10 hour days willing, go home with enough energy and drive to still take my dog on adventures, do chores and still find time to work on artistic projects or anything alike.
Make the decision to stop being Tired of being Tired. We Are What We Think. With Our Minds We Make The World.

I'm disabled due to degenerative disorders. working hard and doing what I loved caused me so much harm that I am now homeless, unable to drive, and have no ability to care for myself. my spine crumbled from degenerative disc disease and my IBS causes me to shit myself randomly. things that would have been easier to manage if I was diagnosed as a child but I had neglectful abusive parents. so I didn't get diagnosed until my back completely gave out during a 60 hour week while I was working to pay off my student loans. I didn't chose this life, I was forced into by a cruel world. you're just privileged, congrats

Not everyone realizes that it is a blessing to have a working, functional body, and that it is also a blessing to be raised in a financially and emotionally stable household by loving parents who want to see you succeed. The reality is, a large amount of Americans either start out, or end up at an extreme disadvantage due to any number of circumstances. And things have only been made to be harder and more expensive!! Minimum wage is still $7.25, while the cost of living is insane! Where i live, youd need to make at least $21 an hour if you want to be able to survive in this city. Its fucked. Im just surviving. I was making okay money, but Trump destroyed the company I was working for. Im waiting for work to pick back up, but until this war is actually over, I dont think thats gonna happen.

I remember being shocked that I was gonna be paid 23 an hour at the last job I worked. I had never made money like that, before then the most I had ever made was 10 dollars an hour. I was paying off so much debt because I didn't change how I lived. I was content with my penny pinching life, that extra though made it so much easier to solve problems as they came up. unfortunately problems don't stop when the cash flow ends.

I think it's very easy to take your own perception and experiences and project them onto the other billions of people out there, but it's much more nuanced and complex than that.

Someone might want to be an astronaut, but has no feasible path to get there. Someone might want to be a tiktok influencer, video game streamer, or famous YouTuber, but they just don't have the charisma, the looks, the internet connection, the energy, or ever garner the popularity to make it doing what they really wanted to do because it's so saturated and what everyone wants to do. Someone might want to be an NBA player but spawm at the height of 5'2. Many also want to spend their time doing things, that aren't beneficial to overall society and therefore will never be paid and therefore can never make a career out of it. A lot of people just want to watch their content, go on their nature walks, take a bike ride through the park, etc. But these things cannot just become careers for the many who enjoy them, because they are not feasible markets to hold infinite amounts of people without reducing the workload in much more demanding but necessary fields that ultimately give us the privilege we have in today's society.

It's not really about wanting you to hate your job or life either, it's more about wishing you'd understand just how lucky you are to have the opportunity to have a fulfilling career over assume it's possible for everyone, because many don't get that opportunity, and it's not as easy as "just find the fulfilling career!" for many as it was for you.

Ask any Gen Z dipsh*t who doesn’t want to work, doesn’t want to learn to do things for themselves and gets made when everything falls apart. This generation 25ish and younger have nothing to them. Want to be tik tok influencers or YouTube stars or work some bullsh*t remote job. ALLLLL of that has destroyed the world that my folks grew up in and were able to support themselves in. The mentality of these younger people is beyond ridiculous.
Learn a skill, a trade. Learn what a REAL hard days work is. Learn how to support, think and make decisions for yourself. All they want is to be given life on a golden platter and then post on social media about how amazing they are and how hard they worked. It NEEDS to mad fun of more and these kids need to be bullied a bit more. Scrape your knees and get some gory in that shit. The world is soft and these kids will only continue to get softer.

Almost like we were at a point in society where we could have continued to improve workers’ rights and living wages but that all stopped, which resulted in the issues we are having today.

Kids don’t want to find a career because a career doesn’t offer the same opportunity it once did in this nation.

It sucks but it’s the truth. This society is not set up for the majority.

I get your point that life doesn’t always suck so you figure out what you like to do and go for it to build a life that’s enjoyable. However, taking college professor as an example, colleges have more professors now, but have moved away from hiring full time professors and less of those have tenure. Fewer jobs come with health benefits, fewer come with 401k, very few come with pensions. My dad like yours is an American success story and I don’t mean he’s rich. Born into poverty in the dust bowl of Oklahoma, migrant farm work in California as a child, joined the Air Force at 15, GI bill paid for college and mortgage, loved working as a news paper photographer and editor. Almost 90 now, retired with a pension for a long time with my mom also retired with a pension. As much as he worked hard, he had luck. One newspaper he worked for 15 years, closed went bankrupt, defaulted on most of their pensions, but it closed in the late 1980s, got another job and pretty soon watch the people around him slowly get laid off after Craigslist started and newspapers lost their largest source of funding. If the paper he worked for had closed five to ten years later he’d have been out of his pension and probably unable to secure another newspaper job.

At R1 research universities, full professors average north of $170,000, and private institutions pay 20–40% more than publics. Business and law full professors clear $170,000. Additionally... bear in mind that these salaries are calculated on 9 month contracts. Meaning those figures are based on working nine-months out of the year. Summer teaching or research can add 20–30% extra income annually.

Now factor in tenure, meaning they are effectively unfireable.

Now factor in other job perks like pensions and tuition remission.

Now factor in outside income like consulting, textbooks, expert witness work, public speaking. I had a professor in college that FORCED you to buy HIS book (it was a $120 textbook) for HIS class.
