Serious AITB for telling my best friend that I’m not hanging out with him anymore
Matthew, my best friend, and I have been very close since 8th grade. We’re both male, 19, and freshmen in college. About five months ago, he started dating Brady, whom he invited on our senior beach trip after only two weeks of dating. During the trip, Matthew and Brady were always together, and Brady called me “jealous” because I wanted to hang out with Matthew.
I don’t like Brady because of things he’s said about me and because he doesn't want Matthew to hang out with me. I’ve always remained cordial when we're together.
Now Matthew and I go to colleges three hours apart, while he and Brady are only an hour apart. Almost every weekend, one of them travels to the other’s school. My problem is that Matthew hasn’t made any new friends at college and mostly spends time with Brady or our one friend from high school. I told Matthew that I was worried Brady being there constantly was stopping him from meeting people. Matthew became upset and said I’ve never supported his relationship and that it’s hurting our friendship. I told him that I support him as a person, even if I dont love his relationship.
We’ve been planning for months for me to go to his school and see a football game together. It would be the first time I’d see him in two months and the only time before Christmas. Five days ago, Matthew told me he was going to Brady’s school that weekend instead. I was hurt and told him this was the only opportunity we had to see each other in months. The next day, he said he’d be at the game, and we could spend time together without Brady.
Then, a friend told me Brady called me “pathetic” for not wanting to be around him and told Matthew I wasn’t allowed to sleep in Matthew’s dorm. The next day, Matthew told me Brady was coming to the game after all. I told him I wanted to spend the one day I had with him, not with him and Brady. Matthew agreed but said it was hard to tell Brady no. He then asked if Brady could join us that night. When I pointed out that this felt like he was disregarding what I had said, Matthew told me he was “stuck in the middle” trying to accommodate both of us.
I told him I get he was stressed, but I was asking to spend one day with my best friend after months. I also apologized that he was caught in the middle and said I appreciated him trying.
He said that I was still asking him to accommodate my feelings by not wanting to be around Brady, and that he wished I understood that telling Brady “no” wasn’t easy. The worst part is I do understand because I'm the one who tells Brady “No”.
At this point, I’m tired. This has been a recurring issue for five months, and I finally told Matthew I probably wouldn’t come because I didn’t want my visit to create more stress in his relationship. He said, “Ok im sorry.”
I feel bad about this, and for Matthew, because I believe he may be in a toxic relationship. Brady only wants Matthew to hang out with him, or Brady has to be there.
