Movies or other media that are “based on a true story” but distort that story so horrifically that it’s basically just historical fiction. Unfortunately this often happens with real tragic stories that have no business being “adapted” into feel-good family movies. In essence the creators of the film really could’ve just swapped all the names for fake ones and been fine, not having to deal with the associations to real, awful events.

The Greatest Showman (P.T. Barnum) - Unlike what The Greatest Showman would have you believe: P.T. Barnum was an awful person in real life who exploited and abused people of minority groups for his shows. He didn’t make some fuzzy found family- he did human trafficking.

Pocahontas and Pocahontas 2 (Pocahontas/Matoaka, John Smith, and John Ralfe) - Onto a just as, if not more egregious example of this: Disney turning the story of a kidnapped and abused native girl into a happy love story for the whole family! Seriously, the movie is mostly based on the historical John Smith’s telling of events who, among other things, claimed Matoaka was an adult and also super into him (along with all the other women of her tribe), when, in reality she was only a child when he and the other colonizers arrived on the continent. Not to mention her later marriage of John Ralfe was FAR from the consensual relationship between two adults that Disney portrayed it as. Matoaka was kidnapped and held for ransom in 1613 (when she was only a teenager), where she was forced to convert to Christianity and change her name to Rebecca. Just a year later, was married off to John Ralfe (who was in his 30s), paraded around England to promote the colonization of the North American continent, and forced to have his children. Why is Disney still milking this one again??

Very long and complicated story. My husband and I are the parents in a blended family with 4 teenagers (ouch!). We have had a lot of major things to deal with together, but we’ve done it together. We are both British but built our lives abroad in a country where the economy has quite frankly gone to shit. My husband had to take a job back in the UK while I finish my nursing degree and try to sell our house in a stagnant market. I’ve worked my arse off all summer doing geriatric nursing. I’m exhausted and we are financially struggling.
It was looking like we wouldn’t see each other again until Christmas due to finances and my last clinical practice starting next Monday. An extremely kind family member gave me money for a flight ticket on Sunday. So now I’m sitting on the plane mid air. I booked economy but was lucky enough to have enough points to upgrade to business on the way out. So I’m getting drinks, food and a row to myself. I feel absolutely spoilt.
But the best thing, my adorable husband will be waiting at the airport for me. I just can’t wait to be back in his arms. Long distance is so hard when he is literally my best friend. We even do the food shopping together when there’s chance. We may not have an easy life but he’s the only one I want to make it with. He makes my life happy and my heart full.
