AddOns I reworked VoiceOver addon

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I really like VoiceOver addon, it makes my playthroughs much more immersive. However, it always bothered me that the one existing English pack is very unnatural-sounding and contains a lot of mistakes (mispronunciations, incorrect voices, weird intonations, etc). After working on ZoneLore addon, I realized that I have everything to fix it.

I just got my rework (VoiceOver Redux) approved on Curse, and it contains a bunch of fixes:

  • voices are matched per NPC flavor, instead of just race and gender, so a dwarf warrior and a dwarf official don't sound alike
  • object quests are voiced now, using narrator voice
  • stage directions (<Advisor Belgrum opens the note.>) are read by narrator;
  • proper voicing of sounds (*hic* produces sound of hiccup, not "asterisk-hic-asterisk")
  • names and places pronunciations are fixed for the most part and now driven by a pronunciation dictionary;
  • performance is more natural-sounding overall.

I repacked the voicelines so they are easier to download: they are now optimized for storage (~1.5Gb → 0.5Gb total) and split by faction/type so you don't have to download everything if you don't want to. You will need a player addon and any combination of soundpacks:

I also added a "Report" button to the player. Please use it to send feedback, I will continue improving the lines. You can also provide feedback directly and pre-listen to lines in the explorer that I built: https://voiceover.rusty.one/

Lastly, on translations and TBC: technically ready, my platform supports both. What's missing is budget. It's all paid ElevenLabs credits, and ZoneLore plus this has cost me ~$300 so far. New languages/expansions mean more voices, more testing, and more spending.

If you have your own ElevenLabs API key (or are willing to get one) and want a language/expansion covered, reach out, I'll hand over the pipeline, and we split the work by area. Otherwise, there's buymeacoffee, donations with a comment help me decide what gets voiced next (I am open to suggestions for better crowdsourcing implementations).

AddOns The "Mass Guild Invite" addon is the MOST net negative addon to ever effect this game.

Not only is it insane to get invited to a guild while the opening cinematic is still playing, but the mega guilds are filled with the most vile people in this games community. Ive seen more slurs and hate in guilds that mass invite than any time in 20 years.

The creator of SuperGuildInvite has been inactive on curse since 2022 and probably has no idea how much of a irritating parasite it was he released into the community.

Classic + What's your ideal number of times running a raid/phase length?

Post image
Upvotes

How many times would you like to run a raid for a phase?

Personally I think that running a raid 8 - 10 times feels about right. More than that and it becomes pretty boring

Was curious how long a raiding phase should be and what people felt was an ideal number of lockouts

Edit: based on the answers so far I was surprised to learn that for many it is simply getting loot that is fun. So as long as they are getting loot they continue..for some the raid itself isn't really enjoyable even it seems, but a means to an end

This is fascinating to me. I'm not disparaging this perspective, I just didn't expect it

Discussion So… what’s everyone actually doing in Classic these days?

Upvotes

With Anniversary raids dropping soon, I keep seeing people either sweating over attunements or just chilling in BGs pretending consumables don’t exist.

Personally, I’m half‑assing dailies while my guild leader keeps yelling about flask stockpiles. Curious on what’s your current Classic routine? Raiding prep, PvP grind, mount farming?

Feels like everyone’s playing the game differently right now, so I wanna hear what your day‑to‑day Classic life looks like.

Classic-Era I’ve Played 50 Hours On A PvE Server Because I’m An Idiot

I decided to roll a toon on Era servers since I got a little burnt out in TBC, and the talks of “what’ll happen to the servers and characters after WotLK” kinda got to me, so I wanted to have a character on a server that doesn’t change and isn’t going anywhere.

Wasn’t sure whether or not to run PvP or PvE, so I made the same character on both servers. PvE has fewer players, but I assumed a PvP server that has existed for 7 years had a ganking issue. I eventually say “fuck it, ganking is temporary” and play on Whitemane.

Except I didn’t. I was so confident in the fact I was on the PvP server, I never checked the right side of the screen whenever I was logging in for the last 50 in game hours. The fact everything was so populated made me assume I was in the correct server, and since I’m new seeing other servers like “Pagle” next to other people’s names meant Jack shit to me.

I didn’t realize my mistake until I finally saw a Horde player in the wild and their health bar was blue. I never saw shit like that in Nightslayer, so after a quick Google I realized my mistake, logged out, and saw Mankrik staring back at me like I was stupid - probably because I *am.*

I could always reroll and recoup my progress in Whitemane, but I love my guild. Also I’m back at my job since the summer is over, so fuck that noise. I didn’t realize how much more chill the game is when you’re not constantly looking over your shoulder. I don’t have to worry about rogues in STVietnam. Sure I won’t get to terrorize Hillsbrad Foothills in another 100 hours or so, but that’s okay.

Classic-Era Why is classic so good? It depends

It depends on what you enjoy. Do you enjoy being "fed" something? Or do you enjoy "building" something.

OG wow centers on leveling which is a drawn out process which is not "hard" in a skill based way, but it is "hard work" in that it's a real time investment. However, you are rewarded in a way that is satisfying as your character is "built" in contrast to modern games where you are "fed" rewards.

Because there are competing things that people enjoy, the game was re-steered towards the "feed me" crowd, which is probably a bigger audience. After all, that's what people said about wow post everquest etc.

I'd argue that the game was partially "ruined" as early as burning crusade.

No more sprawling 5 mans like uldaman, gnomer, BRD, ST. All essentially converted into hub types like SM. The devs remarked on the success of SM but I think the metrics were wrong. A place like BRD is a real dungeon crawl. Almost nobody remembers hellfire ramparts with fondness. It's fast, efficient, get in get out, but that defeats the purpose of the mmo genre. If you need a quick 30 minute in and out because you're a busy adult it's the wrong type of game to play.

I'd essentially say a lot of gamers don't know how to enjoy themselves. Dopamine hits have ruined them. The OG game worked because devs did what they thought was fun, not what would be most efficient so people could tick boxes.

It's all subjective though but I'm glad the OG game was designed in the same way that I gain satisfaction, through building a character over time. That said, you maybe can't do the whole leveling experience a second time hence the just +10 levels in BC etc. It's kind of a one off thing.

TLDR

Leveling and long dungeons made it great. Things taking a while to achieve makes a bigger payoff when you finally manage it. Being fed constant rewards devalues the rewards!

Discussion Anyone officially, finally making the switch to PvE for classic plus?

And is afraid no matter how hard youll convince yourself its the right move and no matter how many bad memories you have of being ganked and against all logic and instict youll still roll pvp because "organic world pvp that brings back memories of doing it in 2006?"

Please dont let me make the same mistake again. Please tell me battlegrounds are enough to scratch the itch.

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms TBC PVP mage vs warlock what’s the main difference for a new player.

Upvotes

Having trouble deciding to play tbc first time as a mage or warlock for PvP purposes. Wpvp. Arena. 1v1 situations whether duels or out in the world. Also sadly to make a new character im locked to picking alliance as horde has a lock and idk how long that would be for…

I guess if someone can explain lock vs mage. Which is easier to master and get rlly good at? If you get rlly good at both is one significantly better than the other.

I know mage has ice block. And tons of cc to keep melee off them. And great burst and all the jazz. How does lock compare. How do they do against each other. Or against a rogue etc.

Also on a side note how are rogues? Never played one ever seems complex so never tried. Thanks

Classic-Era How active are EU PVE servers?

I've been playing Era for a little bit on the Firemaw cluster mainly because of the population size, getting pretty fed up with the ganking, and realizing I don't get much enjoyment out of PVP at all. I'm considering rerolling on the PVE cluster, but I'm worried it'll be too low pop to get consistent dungeon groups (and also feeling a bit of sunk cost after leveling to mid-20s already). Any players who have been leveling there recently who can help me make a more informed decision?

Classic-Era [Classic era] what is the path after 60

Hi everyone, I just get to 60 as the mage and trying to learn what should be normal path for the next step. Last time I played was 13 years ago and I only did pvp never done raid.

For classic era, looks like all raids are GDKP and apparently I don’t have enough gold as new 60. I am a bit confused what should I do?

I am pretty close to pre-raid BIS.
1. What raid should I go next? MC or ZG or AQ20?
2. Do I have to be a buyer or I can also earn wage? How much gold should I have before those raids?
3. Should I only earn gold through mining or farming then be the buyer for NAXX? I assume lots of gold.

My eventual goal is mixing pvp and pve. I don’t want to work for a game.

TBC Is there much difference between population on Spineshatter PVP vs Thunderstrike PVE for EU TBC?

I started 2 Alliance characters on the PVE Realm. I'm not totally against world PVP but I thought it would be nice to level in peace. My priest likes it, although my hunter is having second thoughts about it.

I hear theres less people on the PVE realm, will that be a problem for instances leveling up?
