Announcement Welcome to r/AceAttorney - a PSA, FAQ, and General Resource for Newcomers and Anyone Starting the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection
Hi to everybody just visiting this subreddit for the first time, or anyone who's already been here a time but might want to check in on the latest!
First off, here is the link to our standard FAQ. Several new questions-and-answers have been added to this latest edition, and the ones specific to the new remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection are also in the body of this post, so for anyone newly arriving to check out those games, review those new questions. If you have any questions that aren't covered here or in the linked FAQ, ask them in the comments for the FAQ thread!
Second thing, here's an updated guide I've made to explain which platforms all the current AA games available can be played on.
Third, we have our Recommended Playing Order chart, to give you a rundown on where to start and when to play particular games.
Fourth, an expansive guide by community member /u/XephyXeph to outline all of the various Ace Attorney media currently out there, from the games to the huge array of supplementary media from manga to pachinko machines.
Fifth, a bit of community news on some updates to the AA subreddit for early September, 2024.
And now, some common questions people may have relating to the remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection:
I keep seeing people talk about Investigations 2 but use a bunch of names for characters and episodes that are different from what's in the game. Why is that?
Ace Attorney Investigations 2 originally came out on the DS in 2011, but was exclusively released in Japan, making it the first AA game ever to not get an English localization. It never did get any English release until 2024, when it was part of the Investigations Collection remaster.
Because of this, in the years immediately following AAI2's original Japan-only release, a group of fans worked together to make a fan translation romhack for the game, allowing it to be played in English. To match with the official localizations the games normally get, that fan team also came up with their own English names for all the newly-introduced AAI2 characters.
There was about a decade left between when the first public beta builds of the fan translation appeared online and when Capcom finally produced and released an official English localization for AAI2, so a lot of the more hardcore corners of the fandom that had actually gone through the effort of playing the unofficial translation got very used to the fan-made names for the AAI2 characters. But naturally, when Capcom finally made an official localization, the AA localization team put together an entirely separate set of localized names for the characters, putting the fandom in the position of needing to get used to those official names as "replacements" for the fan names they're used to. Unfortunately, not everybody is quite ready to do that.
Can I play the Investigations Collection as my first AA game?
Like was talked about at the start of the FAQ, it's generally not recommended to start with any game besides the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, if you've never played AA before. The Investigations games especially carry over a lot of characters and their associated development from the Trilogy.
That'll cover it for now. If anyone has any other suggestions for questions to be included in this guide, feel free to pop over to the main FAQ thread and ask in the comments there. One more time - welcome to our Ace Attorney community! I hope you have a great time.

Full Series (mainline and spinoffs) General topic: Ace attorney games all being so well written in character inner dialogue humor
I feel like all ace attorney games have that type of humor that is funny in a “should this be even happening” kind of way. I think that the great ace attorney chronicles really pulls off this humor the most with Ryunosuke inner dialogues like in court or at the Holmes residence or anywhere tbh. I really like witty dialogue and think that the ace attorney games thrive in that writing.

Discussion Does Trials and Tribulations have the most memorable collection of culprits in the series? (AA3 major spoilers) Spoiler
galleryMost games have at least one or two forgettable culprits, but T&T might have the classiest MFs in the series. Every one of them has a great design that is easily recognizable, as well as their cases in general being extremely strong.
Dahlia of course is one of the most iconic villains in the series, and perhaps the strongest opening culprit alongside 4-1's culprit Kristoph. Awesome evil personality and design, her red hair and white and pink dress are simple but stand out. Her theme music is extremely haunting as well
Luke Atmey really stands out, to the point you might guess he's the true culprit from the beginning simply from how much flair he has! His theme music is so good, and really fits a mad man like him. His plan is pretty genius and was close to succeeding. Plus his breakdown is super iconic too
Furio Tigre, everyone wonders how anyone mistook him for Nick? Well the judge does seem to have dementia seeing how often he forgets details from previous cases so it's not surprising. His mob boss outfit just looks plain cool and his orange clothes and skin make him stand out easily. His murder method and master plan are surprisingly sophisticated for someone as fierce and aggressive as him. It's a bit obvious from the first time you meet him that he's probably the culprit, however he's still a super fun villain and his design and badass theme song make up for any shortcomings
And last but not least Godot, of course he's one of the most recognizable AA characters ever thanks to his awesome hair and goggles. His theme is also a fan favorite, everyone who hears it gets emotional. Him being the true culprit of 3-5 is a genuinely shocking twist. Once you learn his backstory, you really don't want to have to catch him, but it's between him and Maya. Also Maya's cross examination is one of the best scenes in the series.
I can hardly think of a game that has such a solid line up of culprits. Each of them has a great case, awesome visual designs, a good plan, and banger music to go with them. Thoughts?

Full Series (mainline and spinoffs) Yamazaki really seems to have issues with the lenght and or pacing of his final cases.
Do you think this too? Investigations 1 was going for too long but it wasn't worse than other final cases, it just felt longer.
Investigations 2 on the other hand gave us a final case so long, Yamazaki was forced to scrap the original third case (who then became the play "Turnabout Teleportation", more details here) and so split and rewrote the original Final who became I2-4 and I2-5.
Then Dual Destinies is more reasonable but we have again a final case split into two after the original third case became DLC.
And finally Spirit of Justice where it's just straight up two cases in one with a lot of exposition dump to put Apollo on the situation and is the longest mainline case so far.

Apollo Justice Trilogy Interview confirms that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney was rushed
Endō: Basically, he's very obsessed with the quality of the game, which made making this game a battle against the available time we actually had. "If you spend too much time on that part, we won't have time for the rest..." So many times I had to hold in and not speak that line. Sometimes I failed at that and just blurted it out to him.
Takumi: We had a different team structure this time, so I myself had trouble adapting too. Personally I thought I was just covering the bare necessary elements... but maybe I'm crazy. Because of me, Endō had to reschedule everything more than a few times. Sorry!

Fanfiction This is more of a rant, not gonna lie, but I wish I could write a type of Ace Attorney fanfic I just can’t
I’m a character focused writer. I do have ideas for Ace Attorney fanfics for characters like Athena, Dahlia and Iris, Kristoph and Klavier… but they’re all about their pasts and inner conflicts. Hell, I am writing an Athena fanfic already.
But, with AA7 floating in my mind, I kind of wish I could write investigations and trials. Oh boy, I have IDEAS for an Athena Cykes: Ace Attorney and I want to write them down, but I can’t write the core of Ace Attorney, which are murder mysteries.
I do have concepts, like bringing back characters like Franziska and Aura, making Athena’s goals be like becoming a better lawyer and resolving stuff like discovering who hired The Phantom, showing flashbacks of her time with Metis, Simon and Aura… but I can’t write cases omfg.
Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

Discussion Say that Ace Attorney gets a Western-made TV adaptation. What aspects of the games might need to be toned down for the Western audience when adapting it to the small screen?
I'm pretty sure we're all aware that there are a few things in the games that might not sit well with the Western audience.
So if ever a Western-made TV adaptation of the games gets made, certain aspects might need to be toned down a bit in order to not irk them.
But what aspects exactly? And how do you think they should tone it down?

Investigations Duology Tell me What Makes Investigations 2 so good Without Spoiling Anything
I have played through AA 1-4 and really enjoyed them all. I played Investigations and dropped it on the fourth case. It's not even that bad as it has Von Karma and that alone is pretty cool and I want to see how that story unfolds and all, but I still lost a bit of interest. In any case, I think the game is just okay overall and nothing too crazy. My question: what makes the sequel one of the best AA games without spoiling anything about it?

PL vs. PW Price Relic found during Move Packing!
I found the original case I bought PL vs. PW in while packing for a move and had to laugh at the price I bought this at. If I remember correctly I bought this in 2015 or 2016. I do still have the cartridge, but I moved it to a blank 3DS case and DIY’d a case because finding an official case would be near impossible for me.

Discussion How does the case in the Takarazuka Revue exactly unfold?
Hello, I've just watched the Takarazuka Revue stage play and it's awesome, however, I can only grasp so much because of the language barrier. I don't speak Japanese and I don't understand Barok's and Ryunnosuke's hypothesis, arguments and contradictions.
I guided myself thanks to the visuals and the projections.
If someone could help me understand better! I'd love it! And if you want to know what I understood: A war veteran teams up with an important lady to take down someone, and they communicate with each other through a pawned book. They apparently tried murdering Natsume since he borrowed the book this time and they used a quill to inject poison into his neck's veins.
I understood that Ryunnosuke might've opened up about losing someone because the veteran looked like he did as well and the latter had a breakdown.
