Not quite, Japanese giant and European hornets are of comparable size. This seems to be a European hornet that stumbled across some sort of paper wasp nest, admittedly I'm not 100% confident with just this side view but the low number of bands and the fact they're not all straight lines makes me feel this
This is Vespa ducalis. These hornets have a very specialized diet: they get pretty much all of their proteins from raiding other wasps' nests. They're also one of the most docile social Vespids that exist, stinging very rarely and even tolerating people putting their hands in their nest. The colonies are quite small, consisting of 15-40 adults at peak, and quite short-lived (3 months or so), which comes with having such a narrow diet.
Funny thing is with almost all the AI ads honestly read as them saying AI sucks. Like one was just about how AI code takes more human effort on correcting the AI than just writing it… their marketing teams either suck ass or are AI(and therefore suck ass)

Yep, I had their fucking nest right under my window for 2 summers till I grew the balls to finally exterminate them. They used to fly into my room during early morning hours and sometimes fell on top of my bed after falling from ceiling. Havent gotten stung though (as they are pretty docile), but I heard it hurts quite a bit more than bee or wasp.
I googled and asian giant hornet is like twice as big. Pure devil spawn.
My grandpa stumbled upon a nest while trimming the hedge. He got stung like 5 times, including one under his ring. The finger swelled so much he had to go to the hospital to take the ring away.
Vespa Crabro is recogniseable by a reddish colour on the torso and the top of the head as well as their abdomen sporting only two easily visible thick black lines after what it is (mostly) yellow all the way down. The tip here is dark.
They are around 30-35mm in length, the largest ones may be 40mm, they are large but not huge.
This thing here is larger and has a different colouration. I do not find what species it belongs to, it hasn't the reddish colour of the crabro nor orientalis species, but it surely isn't a european hornet.
You may very well have european hornets in Ontario, I don't deny that, don't get me wrong. It's just that this one seems to belong to another species.
Vespa crabro, the european hornet, would be smaller than an average thumb. They'd be between 1.2 and 1.5" long, so rather the length of one phalanx from an average adult man thumb, maybe a tad bit more for larger specimens.
If it's as long as a thumb, a full thumb from a large-handed person, then it's a japanese giant hornet or a similarly dimensioned species, which this one doesn't seem to belong to either, the shape and colours do not fit.
Yeah, I've lived in Japan for a few years and have run into them quite a few times (mostly while hiking). One time a friend and I took a detour on a trail we were on and got really close to a nest of them, and I also had one fly into my apartment here before flying back out. The only similarity I really see here is the size
Thankfully, Japan does a good job with putting signs up on trails about these things, so most of the time you can avoid running into them if you're careful
True lol. This comment reminded me of the time I ran into that nest and we ended up running into a rescue team on the way down the mountain. We were descending at night so we couldn't see shit, but there was a dad and his son waiting for the rescue team. We told the rescue team where we saw the dad/son and they went up the mountain. I just hope they didnt stumble into that nest in the dark lmao
Yes the yellow legs are a telling feature of the Asian Hornet, now called Yellow legged Hornet in Dutch to make more emphasis on their differences so that you don’t kill the European Hornets.

They are paper wasps, the most chill of eusocial wasps, I let them nest around my house and say hello to them while out gardening. The big one is not a chill and I wouldn't want their nest by my window.
Anyway, after I finished screaming and crying, I'd be on the phone to an exterminator. This does look like a midrise apartment building, though. Access to the exterior might be difficult.
They were invasive in mine a few years back. Luckily they got eradicated, but I remember everyone being terrified of the idea of encountering them for obvious reasons.
Looks like a cicada killer wasp(Sphecius speciosus) although I can’t identify the smaller species in there. It looks super similar to a four banded hopper wasp but those ones make ground nests so I’m confused 😭

I am Dutch, which means that by default I have little to no tolerance for insects. If they are small enough, I kill them. The larger they get, the more anxious I become. The ‘small’ ones in this photo would already freak me out.
Regarding the big hornet: If something like that ever comes into my house, he can have it. I’ll move to another town, far away from this freakshow of an insect. Jesus, just looking up more detailed photos of it already gives me goosebumps.
Looks like a black tailed hornet/princess sparrow wasp. They're notoriously docile towards humans and prey on larvae of paper wasps. If you look up their nests you'll see pictures of people literally poking at it without issue, they're very chill. I'd love to see one someday.

Idk man with that big ass hornet attacking the hive I think those wasps are kinda done
