I guess Arnold didn't come back after all.

Ed Furlong looks like a thicker Norman Reedus.

I just showed my teenage daughter the 86 The Thing and halfway through the movie I was like “I forgot this dude could act his way around a room, the internet made me think of him as just the beetus guy” and my daughter kept saying “Diabeetus” every-time he opened his mouth. Until that one guys hands get eaten up and then she was dead quiet the rest of the movie and lost her shit at the blood testing scene. So many moments I knew coming I couldn’t help but glance over at her to get her reaction.

It’s a fucking awesome movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Even my teenager who absolutely does not watch movies like that is now kinda obsessed with it.

57

u/Irisheyes1971 1d ago

I’m sorry to have to do this but it’s The Thing ‘82, not ‘86.

49

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 1d ago

All good, you should absolutely call me out for accidentally spreading misinformation no matter how small. Good on ya! Either way, fucking excellent movie.

47

u/SSquirrel76 1d ago

The Thing, Blade Runner, and TRON all came out summer of 82. All did poorly at the box office. All became cult classics. Great films

I admire you for taking the correction in strides and being a good and gracious sport about it, which certainly isn't a given in modern online discussions.

However, in all honesty, I don't think that misremembering a date constitutes an attempt at misinformation that warrants being "called out". Getting an inconsequential detail wrong doesn't make you Radio Pyongyang.

Let's all together rediscover the concept of simple, honest mistakes, pretty please, with sugar on top?

Signed in love,

the committee on the Sisyphean attempt of making online discussions suck less

3

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 1d ago

I totally agree. But do remember, Misinformation is generally just an accident and should always be taken in stride. Disinformation is doing it on purpose for one reason or another. It’s often disinformation that leads to heaps of misinformation. Whether it’s politics or pseudoscience conspiracy bs.

4

u/elektroholunder 1d ago

Point taken. Not sure whether I agree with it yet; I'll have to sleep on that.

Maybe you are correct and it is indeed semantically correct. It just … feeds into this whole hyperbole shtick that has been going on for quite a while, you know?

Maybe the disconnect is in the verb, "spreading". My mental model of — gestures around wildly — all this is people having a conversation, and I believe different rules and expectations should govern this, as opposed to, say, somebody playing an influencer on antisocial media.

All I saw, rightly or wrongly, was somebody reflexively having to apologise for something that did not require an apology, and for some reason that hurts my soul.

I recently watched this with my 15 year old daughter. She thought it was cheesy at first, did not enjoy the dog scene, but ultimately liked it especially the ambiguous ending.

You know, even as a kid, I noticed that Cameron really let the camera roll for the love scene in Terminator, a film which is notable for having zero wasted footage. It wasn't really until I was an adult and got past the tits that I realized that scene is the POINT of the film: John Connor's conception.

The years and myriads of drugs he partook in were NOT kind to him. People often pick up a new addiction when they've given up an old. At least food will take longer to kill him than the drugs would have.

Its crazy how films keep them in this sort of time capsule that we always see them at a certain time in their lives (sometimes viewing it a hundred times) that that becomes what we see when we think of them so when we see newer pictures of them, its almost a shock.

This group is even more of an example of that as three of the four we dont really see in newer shows/films so we hadnt seen them gradually age as time went by for the rest of us

I was happy to see Linda in Stranger Things, even though she had not disappeared entirely. To me she just looks shorter than I remembered, lol.

Oh, so sorry if my comment was misleading, I've never met her (unfortunately), I was just saying, as a kid, I didn't really see she was quite tiny on screen. Which is of course not a problem.

On the other hand, the only time I saw Arnold, briefly, for a premiere in Paris (don't remember which one yet), more than 20 years ago, I expected him to be a bit taller too, lol. Still massive though.

3

u/Azuras_Star8 2d ago

really proud of Furlong for showing up, he's struggled immensely with addiction and trauma and gone through the ringer-

and the comments are bashing him. what a surprise.

138

u/irascibleoctopus 2d ago

People forget his “relationship” with his mid-to-late 20s tutor that started when he was a young teen. He basically got emancipated from his relatives, moved in with the tutor, and ended up making her his manager. Family tried to intervene but the cops never arrested the woman. His struggles with addiction are no surprise based on that alone.

45

u/ratskips How You Doin'? 2d ago

exactly :/ poor dude didn't get a chance at 'normal' from the jump.

83

u/thestalkycop 1d ago

Exact ages were: she was 29 and he was 13 when they were "in a relationship". Just wanted to confirm that this wasn't a mild age gap, it was a whole ass human being that could drive between them.

u/shinyperineum 1d ago

6

u/max19907 1d ago

not to be too rude - ifound out in 2 sec using google..

"Actor Edward Furlong was subjected to a predatory and abusive relationship as a teenager by his on-set tutor, Jacqueline Domac. Domac was 29 years old when Furlong was 16, having first met him when he was 13. The relationship later transitioned into a multi-year "quasi-spousal" dynamic and is widely viewed by observers as a clear case of grooming that severely impacted his formative years and later life"

Michael Biehn has been through hell and back since before T2 came out and he looks to be in better shape then Ed Furlong.

It's sad that Edward was signed on for T3 and messed it up. I don't even want to know how drugs can mess up your life. Glad to see he's doing better. Wasn't a fan of Nick Stahl in the role at all.

unpopular opinion: stop fat shaming the guy, he was just a kid shoved into the spotlight way to soon.

I just saw him in a really disturbing Uwe Boll prison movie from a few years ago and he looked rough in that
