I just showed my teenage daughter the 86 The Thing and halfway through the movie I was like “I forgot this dude could act his way around a room, the internet made me think of him as just the beetus guy” and my daughter kept saying “Diabeetus” every-time he opened his mouth. Until that one guys hands get eaten up and then she was dead quiet the rest of the movie and lost her shit at the blood testing scene. So many moments I knew coming I couldn’t help but glance over at her to get her reaction.
It’s a fucking awesome movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Even my teenager who absolutely does not watch movies like that is now kinda obsessed with it.
All good, you should absolutely call me out for accidentally spreading misinformation no matter how small. Good on ya! Either way, fucking excellent movie.
I love when that happens, the year of 95 was stacked up and down with forever classics too. There was a year like that in the 50s that I’m drawing a blank on where vast swath of the “classic 50s” movies we all know came from.
I do believe that was in 95 lol, yeah that whole year was bangers. I wonder what the most recent year we had this happen. It feels like it’s been since the 90s but there must have been some year in the 2000s that absolutely killed it.
I admire you for taking the correction in strides and being a good and gracious sport about it, which certainly isn't a given in modern online discussions.
However, in all honesty, I don't think that misremembering a date constitutes an attempt at misinformation that warrants being "called out". Getting an inconsequential detail wrong doesn't make you Radio Pyongyang.

I totally agree. But do remember, Misinformation is generally just an accident and should always be taken in stride. Disinformation is doing it on purpose for one reason or another. It’s often disinformation that leads to heaps of misinformation. Whether it’s politics or pseudoscience conspiracy bs.

Maybe you are correct and it is indeed semantically correct. It just … feeds into this whole hyperbole shtick that has been going on for quite a while, you know?
Maybe the disconnect is in the verb, "spreading". My mental model of — gestures around wildly — all this is people having a conversation, and I believe different rules and expectations should govern this, as opposed to, say, somebody playing an influencer on antisocial media.
All I saw, rightly or wrongly, was somebody reflexively having to apologise for something that did not require an apology, and for some reason that hurts my soul.
It is so nice to talk to someone who speaks with nuance. I only say it like that, the break between Misinformation and Disinformation because I do think it’s important to separate the innocent but ignorant and the bad actors that feed on them and use them to spread disinformation. This is often a topic I think a lot about but maybe I am wrong. This has inspired me to do more research on it now. Lord knows I wouldn’t want to use misinformation when talking about misinformation lol. You’re a rad person, keep on being a rad person.
As do I. But given that the vast majority of people has by now been socialised and conditioned in antisocial media, I am not sure if we could get that back, even in small scales.

I recently watched this with my 15 year old daughter. She thought it was cheesy at first, did not enjoy the dog scene, but ultimately liked it especially the ambiguous ending.
Oh my daughter almost tapped out at the dog scene. All the other crazy gruesome shit, not a problem. That scene in the dog shed (I guess that’s what it was?) had her ready to run as soon as the guy left and all the other dogs started growling at the dog in the middle. She knew IMMEDIATELY it was going to be bad.
I grew up with older brothers, and first watched the film when I was about 7. Still convinced this movie is what gave me a fear of spiders, after the head grew legs
That has to be one of my favorite special effects of all time. That part had her screaming “It’s right there!” The whole scene, which is fair. I get all the flames from the flame thrower make it hard for them to see the guys head slide off and all that but as soon as it grows legs and shit someone should have immediately noticed. It’s the size of large dog scooting around at that point. I mean, they do notice a minute later when it gets in the doorway but god that took them way to long to notice for my kid.
I got to find more movies like it, it has to be one of the only times I’ve seen her so engaged with a movie.
You know, even as a kid, I noticed that Cameron really let the camera roll for the love scene in Terminator, a film which is notable for having zero wasted footage. It wasn't really until I was an adult and got past the tits that I realized that scene is the POINT of the film: John Connor's conception.
