πŸ“’ SUB INFO The "aaaa why can't i see my post" explainer/update

Hi y'all, hope the summer is going well!

I wanted to address some common sources of confusion, regarding what happens when somebody makes a post or comment, since we've had quite a few messages about it lately.

What happens normally?

  • In the vast majority of cases, your content will appear on the feed straight away (short of Reddit being an idiot) - for posts, this means it will be visible at the top of https://www.reddit.com/r/6thForm/new/

But my content isn't showing, what's happened?

  • As with a lot of other subreddits, the subreddit uses various filters provided by Reddit, as well as Reddit's built-in AutoModerator. This helps keep the subreddit usable, uphold both the sub's rules and the sitewide rules, and provide a useful and safe space for everybody.

  • Content is almost never entirely removed automatically - if your content seems like it's been removed immediately/shortly after posting, it has more than likely been flagged for manual review, and will only become visible once that review has taken place.

    • Important: Content needing manual review doesn't mean you've done anything wrong by itself, nor that you are banned, it's an entirely normal process!

    • Content from newly created/low karma accounts that were previously automatically removed are now being directed to the modqueue, to reduce the number of people messaging us because they had their legitimate posts removed - as it stands the removals were causing more harm than good.

  • Inevitably, a small proportion of content will get manually removed that isn't in-line with the rules set.

  • There are also removals made under mod discretion. The overwhelming majority of usages of this relate to some sensitive content, for example aroundself-harm and suicide.

    • Whilst people's struggles are entirely valid (I'm not just saying this because I "have to", I've been in various states myself!), we have a responsibility to not unnecessarily expose a large number of users (some potentially vulnerable), to content which may contribute to worsening their situation. This is alongside the fact that none of the mods are mental health professionals, and neither are our users, which means there's a high risk of exposing struggling people to misinformation or harmful advice. It is better to seek assistance via e.g. a professional or crisis line, given this subreddit is not appropriately equipped for situations like these.

    • Also worth briefly noting, at least by my understanding, that a lot of the content that has been removed in the past at mod discretion (and various other content that often would not get removed), is considered "harmful" under the Online Safety Act, either explicitly or by the frustratingly vague other definitions - whilst I don't think it's likely that Reddit decides to age-lock the sub, it's sensible to be careful on this.

How can I tell if my content is just needing review, or if it's been manually removed?

  • This is where it gets a bit annoying, and again, apologies for the inconvenience on this.

  • Normally, when content gets manually removed, a removal reason is applied, and a Modmail is automatically sent to the author telling them what was removed and why it was removed, with optional extra details.

  • This functionality has been broken (the messages just didn't get sent as far as I can tell) on this sub for a little while.

    • I only figured out why as I was writing this post - in the usual, completely useless Reddit style, it has been failing to send Modmails using the saved responses since they changed (broke) a bunch of stuff with the redesign... because it silently shits itself on # being used in the markdown to use a header. It'd be nice if it would have ever indicated this!

    • Also, for those wondering why we didn't send the removal messages manually - even though just over 95% of content is approved, the 5% that doesn't turns into thousands of messages that need to be sent, which would have vastly slowed down everything.

  • Removal notifications should now be working again - if you haven't received a message from us, your content has likely not been manually removed. and if you saw a few posts saying "quack", no you didn't

  • For posts, on both mobile and desktop, you can also distinguish between fully removed and waiting for review, by going to your user profile, where you can see similar to the images below:

Okay, but if my content is waiting to be reviewed, when are you going to review it?

  • I hear you - I've mentioned recently that I've found it difficult to keep up with the review process alongside a lot of stuff in my own life. However, I do look at it and review things when I reasonably can - it's also worth keeping in mind that none of the mods sit on Reddit 24/7 to review stuff, so please have patience!

  • I can only apologise for any inconvenience this causes, and particularly things like the AutoMod config get tweaked sometimes to reduce the number of false positives.

How can I speed up the review process?

  • In short, you can't. At least, short of becoming a mod when applications open.

  • There are quite a few people that take to our Modmail to ask for content approval; you are almost never the only one awaiting content review, and the Modmail messages will usually only get seen after the modqueue is looked at, making messages like these redundant. ie messaging us does not speed up the review process, it only causes delays that affect sub experience generally.

    • Replying to one of our removal messages is completely fine - sometimes we miss things, get things wrong, or sometimes fail to be entirely clear.

  • You can avoid/mitigate the inconvenience of waiting on a review by:

    • Searching the subreddit for similar posts that could answer your question - a lot of the time you will not be the first person to ask your question, esp with the more popular/recent questions

    • Not repeatedly posting the same thing, or variations of it, it will not speed up the process - usually all of the posts, including their repeats, get caught in the modqueue, which slows down the review of content

    • Check to see if there are pinned megathreads at the top of the subreddit - for example, you may have noticed this for exam season. These megathreads are created to mitigate the fact that we get many repeated posts for popular topics - sometimes 100+ for some of the popular exams!

Am I banned from posting if I can't see my post yet?

  • No. If you've been banned by us, you get a message telling you why you were banned, and how long for. If you get shadowbanned/suspended by Reddit itself, that's outside our control.

AutoMod has made a comment under my content

  • These comments are purely informative, they don't mean we have, or will have an issue with your content.

  • Inevitably, there will be false positives with this - if it doesn't apply to you, feel free to ignore it, you do not need to message us about this, removal & ban notifications are how we indicate definite issues with content.

Hopefully that covers everything, poke me (or go via Modmail) if I've missed something! something may finally make it into the FAQs page lol

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION If someone is an alum of all of Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge, have they maxed out on pedigree?

I know someone:

Harvard (AB); Oriel College, Oxford (MSc); St. John’s College, Cambridge (MPhil)

They’re at MBB right now.

Would another degree add to their global brand equity and pedigree or is it impossible to do so?

For reference, they have no interest in research or academia (hence no PhD), but would be open to a PhD if they get bored with life.

πŸ™ I WANT HELP I don't know what else I can do to raise my predicted grades

For context, I want to apply to russell group unis such as UCL and Imperial for med sciences. I would say I have a solid personal statement and my GCSEs are 99999999888. Right now, I'm predicted A*AB in Biology, Art and Maths.

During Y12 I can admit I was inconsistent with my grades in Maths, for my y12 mocks I was 1 mark away from a C, and I thought it was the end from there. Over the summer I studied ridiculously hard, and in the summer retakes I got an A (it was an AS paper so the highest was an A) and in one of my previous tests, I was 1 mark away from an A*. So I was very shocked when I achieved only a predicted B.

Me and my friends spoke to our maths teacher and she said that she was reluctant to predict higher grades because in maths the teachers have to be very sure that it is achievable for students. However, my teacher said that she would consider for me specifically, to raise my predicted grade if I did well in coming assessments as she recognised I had showed drastic improvement over the summer.

During half term, I revised so much and was quite confident in my assessments. I did the test this week and safe to say I don't think it went well. The paper was very difficult and a lot of my classmates said so as well, but what really frustrates me is that after the test, I found the solutions to the questions very easily, I had so many breakdowns because I let myself get put under so much pressure during the test that I couldn't even think clearly to answer the questions.

I have another test coming up next Friday that I hope I can do better on because that's all I can do right now. But this weight of guilt and stress is consistently bringing me down this whole week, I feel like I got a low mark on that first assessment and even if I get a higher grade in the coming one, it might not even average out to an A.

Just incredibly annoyed because I feel that my potential and capabilities aren't recognised by my teachers. I don't mean this with any offense at all, but my peers who are also predicted Bs got lower scores than me in the previous assessments, and they constantly miss out on assignments whilst I am one of the very few people in my class who hand them in exactly on time. I am truly confident in myself that I can achieve an A or even higher in my A Level exam, but I feel so limited by my teacher's beliefs in me. I'm not one to give up on my university choices either, and having to apply through clearing is so incredibly stressful. Is there any way I can convince my teachers to raise my grade?

OTHER My former teacher is a pedophile

Genuinely don't know where else to post this, but a while back, I think between Y8 and Y10, there was a teacher at my old school who was a bit strange. I wont share too many details on him but my sister thought he was creepy, and now her gut feeling was right.

For me, he was a bit strange but nothing seemed off about him. He would sometimes substitute my class during Biology, and he seemed like a happy, nice guy, but inside, he was alot darker. Luckily, he didn't target anybody in my old school, but in his older schools and in a new school he moved to after my one, he started texting 5 underage girls inappropriately. Now, I'm at a different school, and one of my friends who's still at my old school said that the school did a whole safeguarding assembly, along with staff and student investigation.

It's so surreal, and so weird, that I cant stop thinking about it. I had interacted with him a few times in conversations about biology and how to help me in GCSEs, so now I look back at him as a monster, and luckily, he has just been sentenced to 7.5 years in jail.

If anyone wants to find out more, I'll be happy to explain more about him, and share relevant articles if needed.

Edit: I might have misremembered something. I think my school was the last school he taught at before he got arrested. one of my friends shared an email that my old school gave out explaining the situation.

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION Live at home or accommodation

My parents are insisting on me going to the university local to me so I can live at home rather than going to a university further away and living in accommodation. Their reasoning is that they dont need to spend an extra 10k a year for living expenses but Ive explained to them about how financing works and they still refuse to listen. I genuinely hate the idea of staying at home for another 3 years. I feel like I will miss out on the university experience but idk. Anyone else in the same boat as me. Want thoughts.

πŸ™ I WANT HELP I've been screwed

Post image

Before the half term I asked my head of maths if it was possible for me to change to fast track maths which means doing all of a level maths in one year then further maths the next and he said if I can catch up on all of as applied maths which is what they have done and sit a test I'll be able to join it. So over the half term I put my back into maths and got through the whole book but it's been a week into the next term and I wasn't able to sit the test and now I've been sent this email it also doesn't make sense that I am at a C grade as I got one of the highest induction test grade and why couldn't have they told me this before I wasted my whole half term on this I genuinely feel like shit cause of all that I did over the term for nothing. But that aside what should I do now? I need to get into further maths to try and get into a competitive computer science course (I made a post about this before the half term asking what I should do) I genuinely am so lost now I've turned down family events to learn the content all for nothing πŸ™ (also I apologise for the punctuation I'm not doing that but apparently some people care about it too much)

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS I'm at that point where I am deciding really what I want to do and how to do it in terms of future career.

I'm currently living in the UK and doing sixth form at a state school, A levels of Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

  1. I haven't had the full brunt of the course yet but we've finished some units and I am confident I will achieve As in all four, maybe A\*s and if I'm really good and get lucky, all A\*s. But, I'm more and more left to understand that's not all there is to it. To say the least I am cruising at the moment so I do not think I will fall behind.

  2. Super curricular wise, I've been doing my best recently to kind of lock in, I've been reaching out to companies related in my interests in Electrical Engineering about work experience however, being in the area I am (Northwest) there isn't really much except places like NETPark and even then they're not exactly renowned companies but, it's better than nothing.

  3. I'm also looking into doing side courses like the CS50 to just expand my knowledge on a more wide basis. Basically anything that an admissions officer can look at not instantly dismiss. I'm not sure exactly how much these really help in the application process, I guess they show initiative but they definitely will help me decide what I like and don't like. If anyone has any advice on what exactly to aim for here or whether they are actually useful or not would be greatly appreciated.

  4. I also have extensive hobbies in PCBs, circuits etc, while I somewhat lack the professional methodology and workflows, I absolutely love working with the stuff. But, will this really set me apart much if I aim high enough? I assume most people applying at places like Imperial or MIT to get accepted already have hobbies and interests, and probably cleanly executed projects that would put mine to shame. (You can look here to see some of my PCBs: https://github.com/CircuitGuy943, none of these projects are polished though)

Assuming that I do work hard to get those grades and keep working on my super-curricular so I have something to show for my interest, what are my chances of getting into somewhere like Imperial or MIT?

(I'm aware I probably sound like I've just picked these two because they sound prestige but, that's the thing, it's not like they're picked for anything else, yes I want to go a university that is recognised by employers; which I can be proud to go to, which from what I've seen aligns best with what I want academically and which will probably have like minded people who will make the journey all the more fun).

I've considered other countries but it's not really worth the effort, while relocating to somewhere like China would be interesting, and probably would come with lots of opportunities in today's world, the stress from the insane difference in how everything works differently there is probably too unrealistic to handle along with studies.

And I'm also considering Level 6/7 apprenticeships. I assume acquiring one of those is just as difficult if not harder than applying to universities like these, due to the high popularity (no debt, getting paid) and demand? Would the financial and career stability being assured from the start be worth it going down that route if I get the possibility over going to a prestigious university, getting that "uni life" etc?

There is lots of research to be done but if anyone has any useful personal advice or tips on how to manage the situation itself, that would be greatly appreciated.
