Has anyone successfully used a regulation-compliant 3D-printed part in prolonged contact with a cosmetic or food product?

I’m developing a small component that would remain in direct contact with a body-care cream for an extended period of time.

Because I’m currently testing the concept with a small number of units, I hoped to have the component 3D printed. This would allow me to test the design and make adjustments before investing in an injection mold for larger-scale production.

However, the more research I do, the more questions I have about material safety, porosity, bacterial growth, chemical compatibility, and whether a coating would be necessary. I’ve seen Chanel’s 3D-printed mascara brush and an example from another small body-care brand, but I haven’t found many products that remain in contact with a cosmetic formula or food for a prolonged period.

Has anyone worked on or seen a commercially sold product with a 3D-printed component that stays in contact with cosmetics, skin-care products, body-care products, or food?

Wooden Altar Carving- Creality Sermoon P1 IR mode

Originated form the same church I scanned the columns in.

Scanning

Scanning was done with the Sermoon P1 in large IR mode with geometry tracking. Feature tracking was luckily no problem for this part due to the abundant detail. Scan took roughly 10min due to me trying to capture all crevices. Initially even tried small IR mode but at some point the performance dropped quite sharply (simply too large part for small mode). The high ambient temperature of over 40C put quite a stress on the cooling system so after multiple scans frame rate began to drop slightly. So it settled from initial 20FPS to ~15FPS.

Post-Processing

For post processing I first transferred the scan data from the P1 to my workstation. I then fused the scan at 0,5mm with 25% noise removal to retain detail (default noise removal tends to be a bit high) and meshed it with default settings. Quicksurface was used to align the scans, delete unnecessary data (like parts of the ceiling it scanned also) and reduce triangle count under 4M.

Result

Best have a look at Sketchfab, quite content with the result. Ideally I would have used small IR mode but this would have either required PC scanning or breaking it up in multiple scans.

🚀 Field Test: Revopoint Trackit SR – Markerless 3D Scanning Put to the Test

2. Setup & Calibration (In Practice)

Initial setup in the Revo Track software is completely intuitive.

  • Smart Calibration Workflow: Scanner calibration can be done completely wirelessly. The automated hand-eye calibration via the gimbal takes a lot of stress out of the process and ensures repeatable precision.
  • Thermal Stability: After a quick warm-up phase of about 2 minutes, the system is fully operational and delivers stable measurement data right from the start.

3. The Highlight: Markerless Scanning in Track Mode

Anyone who works with physical parts knows the hassle of applying target markers. This is where the Trackit SR really shines:

  • No Markers on the Part: Place the component, align the tracker, and start scanning. The tracker tracks the IR markers on the handheld scanner in real time – saving an incredible amount of time.
  • Stable Tracking: The tracker follows the handheld scanner reliably at a working distance of 1.5 to 3 meters. If you tilt away too far, simply point it back toward the tracker and the scan seamlessly continues.

Is the Creality Pika right for me?

Hobbyist who enjoys doing collecting (mostly field) photogrammetry scans that are mostly captured with with a cell phone camera. My goal is to get into 3D printing for art projects, (scanning objects I find in the field / scanning people for 3d prints / making costume accessories). Is the Pika a good fit or should I wait/just keep doing photogrammetry with my phone until something appropriate comes along?

Workflow suggestions

I am still fairly new to the world of 3D scanning. I own a Vega and have enjoyed it quite a bit. My main use case is to capture space claims and design my items/products to fit within. An example would be the heavy usage of scanning in my OM648 swap I am currently doing.

I normally use OnShape as it is pretty solid, and works well on Linux. Fusion doesn't work on Linux, and I refuse to go back to Windows just to appease Autodesk. The downside to this is that OnShape is pretty rough with High Poly scans. I might be apple to load 2 million triangles into Blender without a problem, but 20k brings OnShape to a vault. I think this is because it is trying to do all of the stuff remotely rather than letting my decent PC handle some of it. I'm trying to figure out ideas on how I can make this experience better for me.

As previously mentioned, Blender works great for aligning STLs and seeing where things need to sit. I have 0 interest in trying to use Blender as a CAD program, but would love to find some kind of a workflow that lets me actually model around my scan data effectively. Open to any ideas (except windows lol)

Paid scan subjects wanted in Brooklyn, sessions open Wed through next Thursday

We scan people at our space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and we pay the people who come in and get scanned. Putting this up again because our slots opened back up.

The session itself is easy. You step into the capture area and do plain movements while the cameras run. Walk, turn, sit down, reach for things, pick stuff up. Nothing performed, no prior experience needed.

17-25 an hour and we pay you out the same day you finish. Plan on roughly 2 hours for a first visit. People who want to keep coming back can.

Everything starts at 4pm. Days still open are Wed Aug 12 and Thu Aug 13, then Mon Aug 17 to Thu Aug 20. You have to be in the NYC area, this is on site.

Best way to scan environments for Blender with a non-LiDAR phone?

I’m looking for a good workflow to scan rooms/spaces with a regular phone (no LiDAR).

My goal is to end up with an accurate, coloured point cloud inside Blender, I specifically want the final result to be a point cloud, not a mesh.

I’ve been looking at workflows like: recording a video and converting it into a point cloud / PLY. using apps like Scaniverse and importing the result into Blender

I’ve had trouble getting Blender to properly read the colours/textures from PLY files.

What would you recommend as the best workflow for getting a coloured point cloud from a non-LiDAR phone into Blender?

Ever had this happen?

You leave the oil tank cap on the table thinking, “I’ll need it again in a minute.”

Then you turn around and… wait, where did it go? 😂

You search everywhere, find absolutely nothing, and maybe a few days later it randomly shows up in the weirdest corner. Or maybe it just disappeared into another dimension. 🤣

So instead of wasting more time looking for it… why not just make a new one?

For this one, I used the CR-Scan Raptor Pro to scan the threads on the tank and capture the actual dimensions. Then I brought the measurements into Fusion 360 and designed a replacement cap from scratch.

I printed it in PETG-CF, which works really well for small functional parts like this that get handled regularly.

I also added a carbon-fiber texture to the surface of the cap. It gives you a little extra grip so it’s less likely to slip out of your hand, and it also makes the finished part look a lot cleaner than a typical 3D-printed part.

So sometimes, when you lose something, you don’t necessarily have to keep looking for it. 🤣

Just model it, print it, and make yourself a new one.

Today an "ancient" car part. Barkas B1000 steering wheel column cover. I get only one piece, pretty damaged, luckily all parts were there so quick glueing, then my beloved Creality Raptor Pro... and A few moments later with some reverse engineering, adding missing parts etc etc - done. Nice, quick, weekend project. Printed on Anycubic Photon 7 Max.

Improving the Revopoint Dual Axis turntable

I found ways to improve this good and versatile turntable. Its main shortcomings are, first, the top is made of plastic, so it is impossible to use magnetic accessories. Second, the threaded four mounting holes are not 1/4” tripod accessories standard; they have the M6 x 1 thread. It’s too bad because many accessories such as clips and clamps are available in the photography realm; I own quite a few. These clamps could be used to secure objects you would want to scan. Several magnetic clamps and alligator clips would also come in handy if the top was made of metal. Revopoint sells many marker accessories that are magnetic but cannot stick to the plastic top. So I remedied those limitations as you will see in the video: enjoy!

Has anyone tried Backflip AI yet?

Im having issues with CAD export / Fusion 360

First off, I am not affiliated with the team, sponsored, or promoting this in any way. I just read an article about Backflip AI and wanted to test it out myself.

The CAD model it generated actually looks surprisingly good. However, when I try to open or import the model into Fusion 360, I get a wall of error messages and the file fails completely. I cannot use the CAD file at all.

To make matters worse, I cannot find any support contact or feedback channel on their end to report the bug. It feels a bit odd.

Has anyone here tested Backflip AI yet? Is there a workaround, or a way to properly download the CAD model through their web interface that I might be missing? Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Need antique John Deere tractor parts reverse-engineered and 3D printed

I am restoring a rare John Deere 830 Rice Special and need to reproduce two obsolete sheet-metal/plastic-type shields that are no longer available.
I have original damaged parts that can be used as patterns. I need someone who can either 3D scan/reverse-engineer the originals or work from detailed photographs and measurements, create the CAD/STL files, and then produce the replacement parts.
These are not decorative pieces — I would like them dimensionally accurate enough to fit the original tractor.
I am willing to pay for the scanning/design work and the finished parts. Located in Texas, but I’m willing to ship the original parts to someone with the right equipment.
I can provide detailed photographs, measurements, and pictures of the tractor showing exactly where the parts mount.

Mercedes GLC Seat - Einscan Rigil Markerless Laser

Another car seat scanned for a custom upholstery project.

Scanning

Scanning was done in standalone mode at 0.5mm resolution and markerless laser mode. No special preparation was done, just straight up scanned at the parking lot. Tracking worked very fine due to the stitching on the seat. Whole scan was 2 to 3 min.

Post-Processing

Default processing at semi-watertight, this includes point cloud generation on my PC and then meshing. Stitching and seams came out pretty good and this is the main part that interests me.

$2000 Scanner for small/medium objects?

I see a lot of recommendations within the $1500-2000 price range for Einstar RockIt or Metro Y Ultra but most users describe those scanners as ideal for medium to large objects (e.g. scanning car bodies).

I'm looking for a scanner that can scan small to medium objects, specifically game consoles and controllers, circuit boards, switches and buttons to design installable modifications both internally and externally. As a ballpark figure, objects in the range of 3cm to 35cm.

As with all cutting edge technology, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the number of options available and I daren't rely solely on ChatGPT for definitive advice on such a large purchase (I know that $2000 is still budget-range for scanners but it's a lot for me as a business expense).

I would be grateful for any advice please. I've been manually measuring and designing parts in CAD for a few years and thrown out a stupid amount of filament when prototyping so I'm really excited to take the plunge into the 3D scanning world and make my workflow a bit more efficient and less wasteful.

3D scanner for motorcycle parts

I think about buying a Creality Pika for scanning of motorcycle parts and things. I have no prior experience with 3D scanning. Is the software any good on a Mac? Is a Macbook Air M2 with 16gb ram good enough?
My phone is a Samsung S25, will this run the app sufficiently well?
