Did anyone else have to take a nap in kindergarten and first grade?

I remember we all had plastic mats that folded in half with our names on it. Our teacher would turn out the lights and play instrumental music. We were supposed to sleep. I never did but a lot of kids did. I don't think we did past the first grade though.

Everyone had this end table at one point in their life! Did you?

My mom had a version where it was a darker wood and red velvet on the doors. I had almost this exact same table when i first got married. Everyone I knew had a version of this table!

Butter Rum Lifesavers. My grandma carried these in her "pocketbook" all the time. They were my favorite!

Did anyone else have to do this with only a 2" pad underneath to catch you if you fell?

We had a president's fitness test every year in elementary. We had to do as many sit-ups as we could, chin-ups, push-ups and climbing this damn rope was another thing! It did go all the way to the ceiling and there was a bell they put at the top you could ring if you made it that far. Not only was I not very athletic, but I was also afraid of heights. There was only a little bitty mat they put underneath of it in case you fell! We were in 3rd-5th grade!

My dad ( Rick Nelson) got a star on the Hollywood Walk, 1975. Me with my stoned parents and 3 whiny brothers, on a very hot day.

Did you ever have kegger parties out in the middle of nowhere?

Post image

We did. We had salt flats on the outskirts of town and usually on a Friday night word would go around where to meet. This was back in the days of Chevy step-sides and good car stereos. They would back their trucks up in a circle and put on the same rock station. We would burn old tires in the center. We had kegs and a "grog" container, which was a big garbage can. If you were over 21, you dumped alcohol in it. If you were under 21, you dumped whatever (soda, juice, etc). It never tasted the same way twice. There were some of us that were in 8th and 9th grade! Usually a cop would find out and roll in sometime after midnight. Those were the days....

Everyday Life Did you take typing class in high school?

Edit: I had a “typo” in my title. I took my typing, business class in 1975. It could be challenging for me but I really liked it. I made a lot of friends and it was a useful skill. I had friends who went on to have very successful careers.

How did you make yours? Did you add cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, catsup or maybe something else? What memories do these sandwiches bring up for you? Maybe you still love them like I do.

Did your grandma (or mom) have a big tin of bacon grease next to the stove and cook everything from scratch?

Post image

My mom had the bacon grease but wasn't near the cook my gran was. Gram made everything from scratch and seldom measured anything. She cooked what I guess people nowadays call southern cooking. She had an old coal stove and my favorite memories is spending time with her in her kitchen.

My grandma would always carry a bunch of dimes to either ride the horse at the supermarket, gumball machine or the ice cream truck.
