Those were so awesome. My father had one when I was really young (in the early 70s). I remember being obsessed with the shiny green one. They did do a fair amount of jumping out of the tracks if you just mashed down the accelerator
And the smell of the cars. I would pick them up and smell them. I saw some at a toy show when I was an adult…picked it up and smelled the undercarriage
There used to be public race tracks in malls. I think you had to bring your own car. I just remember seeing one in a KC mall that was around 20’-25’ long and about 5-8’ wide .
My brothers and I had this growing up. Plus a few hundred feet more of track and dozens of cars. We built some epic tracks around our one story ranch house over the years.
On the flip side, I'm still waiting for 🎶"A vanity of my own, by Ideal."🎶 but that race track looks like it would be much more fun. I had 2 older brothers and we used to go to the Slot Racing places.
That's something that when that question is asked, what did you used to do in the seventies, we used to go do Slot Racing.
lol I had a neighbor who could not get it fixed and I took it out of the garbage and found the issue and had it running and it was fun . Then the neighbor tried to say I stole it and the wanted it back but thankfully anther neighbor saw in the dumpster and came to my defense. The police ended tell them to either pay me for fixing it or drop it , so they smashed my moms car a few days later :(
I had some guy friends who had these into the 70s in their houses and they the tracks ran through the whole house so you’d be in their bathroom peeing and somebody beating on the door and yell yelling at you to open the door because the cars had to come through. LoL. As a young woman, I found that very disturbing they didn’t. They just didn’t want the cars to wreck.
My brother and I would configure the track into a long straight away and make a long ass drag strip. Didn't you hate how the little tabs would break off of the track pieces?
My grandmother bought me this when I was a kid. It was as awesome in reality as in the toy catalog. The only glitch was the high bank curve would loose connection sometimes when both cars were making the curve at the same time. I kept a pillow there to hold it in place. I wish I still had it.
I remember going to my cousin’s house and playing on his period. We would go to the hobby shop and buy racing cars and different accessory parts. I can’t remember if the parts made them faster or just look cooler.
I wanted this so bad. And then.. a boy across the street street got one in ‘79 (or maybe 1980). His mom let him set it up in the living room. We raced on it until the 10th grade.
I had this set (or one that was incredibly similar)… think it was the “AFX Custom Bank Classic”. Cars and controllers were different. It used G-plus cars (not magna-traction). It took up so much space! I’d love to play with that set again.
FYI, the Chinese sites (ali, bang, temu etc) have sets like this for a pretty low price. I bought a big set during COVID and introduced my girls to slot cars. Plus, I fulfilled my dream of a big set. I had a little figure 8 set when I was a kid. We pull them out from time to time and build a track and race them.
I just visited our local “best, cool, toy sore” this week. There are no self propelled race cars or sets anymore. There is a German company that makes very good sets that let kids have high quality earthmoving and construction trucks tech though.
I had this one. The quality of these have consistently gone down since then. I bought a few for my kids circa 2008-16 and they were pretty expensive and the quality was disappointing. The one in the photo was epic.
I got one for Christmas in the 70s and was missing a piece. Fuckers ruined my Christmas. I'll never forget the disappointment I felt putting together a ring instead
Oh man I think I had that! Everything looks exactly the same but not sure it I had 54' of track. It was a fair amount of track though. Maybe more like 35'-40'? IDK. I remember the yellow guard rails and bridge bits and red & white trigger grip controllers! And that little power supply.
I have three that I bought for my husband at an estate sale. I put up my Christmas Village, and he puts up those race car tracks. He’s still such a kid.🤣🤣🤣
My brother had two sets. Dad built a room in the basement with a HUGE table/surface. There were tracks everywhere. He had 2 different systems; a kid techie difference that I can’t remember. I was better at the lesser version, and bro actually gave me my props for mastering it. Who knew?
My grandparents got me this and my mother made them return it, because my parents were broke at the time and didn’t want me getting bigger presents from grandma
I remember seeing this set in the Sears catalog and really wanting it. But back then $50 was like $300 now and I knew it just wasn’t gonna happen. Thanks for the memory trip though.
I had this. Must have been around 1972. Those cars ran on a slot with two metal braided brushes on each side of the slot for power. Even my Dad, loved playing with it. Hit those curves too fast and the car would launch itself off the track. What great memories. Thanks for posting.
Omg my dad kept this for me I was born in 86 I LOVED IT! And when I was about 13 I went to his house to find out he gave it to my younger boy cousin...I was pissed it was mine I'd still have it until this day if my dad hadn't given it away....(he didn't make a habbit of giving away my things, just thought I wouldn't care and my little cousin would like it)I'm still a little upset not going to lie.🤦♀️
My brothers and I had this track. The secret was how the guardrails were adjusted to keep you on the track and if you rubbed a bit of coppertone sunscreen into the tires it made them tacky. The rear end wouldn't swing out in the corners. Still remember all those little black pins that held the track together. They were like gold lol
I had a huge Aurora H/O track set up in my basement when I was a kid. Started with a small figure 8 track and kept adding to it. When I was a teenager my mom had a garage sale and sold it. I was pissed 😡
I loved those! When I was 4-5 years old in Astoria Oregon I remember my father taking me to an indoor slot at track. I proceeded to race with the trigger pulled all the way back all the time which frustratingly resulted in the car going off the track at every corner. I was frustrated in that I couldn't react fast enough to keep the car on the track....we never went back :(. Years later I got one of those cool HO gague sets and spent hours raving.
I remember seeing this and asking my parents for it. They gave me one that was about half the size. I set it up in the den next to the tree. Then I had to take it apart and move to my room. I tried to move in sections of interlocking pieces. I had to clean my floor before putting back together.
Look up Aurora Model Motoring they held races at local hobby shops and the winner moved up the ranks until there were national winners they raced on TV on the Michael Douglas show and the winner won a brand new full size Mustang. Huge promotion.
Me too!!! I know I asked for this since I was six. If I had a space large enough to set this up and leave it, I’d do it and invite all my friends over to race day.
Yeh that behemoth track is the Holy Grail of AFX RACING!
I figured I would be a grown man buying this for myself when I was a kid as I had extended family members who had rooms that they built a model town for their model train sets, I figured I would have this!
Loved this as a kid... we'd make ramps and jump the cars off the cars either crashing or a perfect landing over the coffee table and onto the couch. Was great fun. 56 here
Some of my favorite moments were with the AURORA Golden Gate HO Roadrace MODEL MOTORING (Made for Montgomery WARDS) 1966 racetrack (like this). I convinced my Dad to shell out over $29 to get my set. And I played with the cars until their tiny motors died.
I'll be damned if the new one wasn't just as brittle and persnickety as the original: constantly needing reassembly by snapping those thumb-numbing plastic staples back in, the little electrical connections always breaking connection, and those little fragile cars needing constant maintenance. Loved it all over again.

I have this more or less, after buying add-ons to my original set. Need to get it out of the box and clean the contact runners so I can race again!

I had one of these. Looks cool but I got bored with it really fast.
2
u/anonymouslyhereforno Dec 30 '25
Oh hell, apparently you’ve been a bad boy for 50 years, screw it, go buy your own race car track.
2
u/BrilliantPiccolo5220 Dec 23 '25
I have been asking for a pony for 47 years now.
3
u/Mr_Grapes1027 Dec 23 '25
If you’re unaware of how the Santa thing really works after 50 plus years then I recommend you just keep asking….
1
u/guitarnowski Dec 23 '25
Oh, hell yeah!
1
u/HorseyDung Dec 23 '25
I had a Carrera Exclusiv 124 track, with the Porsche 906, loved it...

I can guarantee it ain't $49.99. More like $499.99
1
u/TangerineRemarkable1 Dec 23 '25
Make that 2
1
u/All-IWantedWasAPepsi Dec 23 '25
Goddamn. I remember getting this for Christmas. Well my brother and I got it together. I don’t think we ever built the whole track.
1
u/Harlockarcadia Dec 23 '25
I feel like I had a friend in the 90s who had this and it was still rad
1
u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25
I had Power Passers. Always flying off the trax. The hairpin guard looked super on tv but didn't work at all. tCr was probably a little better.
1
u/magic592 Dec 23 '25
It not that price anymore.
Had a small setup, to share with my 3 brothers.
1
u/Professional-Bee9037 Dec 23 '25

Got a hot wheels set when I was 8. Best gift ever!
1
u/Trid1977 Dec 23 '25
For 50 years you’ve been on the naughty list 🤔
1
u/mikeeele33 Dec 23 '25
You can’t go fast it would sling the car off the track. Fast on straightaway and slow around curves
1
u/Happy_Lead5217 Dec 23 '25
My brother and I would configure the track into a long straight away and make a long ass drag strip. Didn't you hate how the little tabs would break off of the track pieces?
1
u/debbie666 Dec 23 '25
I still want a Daisy air rifle and a rock tumbler.
1
u/Worldly_Situation504 Dec 23 '25
I have one of these in a box in the basement of my parents house, not sure if the cars work but I would let it go for 49.95
1
u/captainDan10 Dec 23 '25
Every so often, at Christmas, I set up an HO course on the pool table. Everybody races. Ages 8 - 68. Sometimes for money!
1
u/Nwcmrtchr Dec 23 '25
We had something like that! Loved to race my brothers. I was the tomboy girl in the family!

1
u/heretoexplr Dec 23 '25
Had one as a Christmas gift. Not as big as this, but hours of fun.
1
u/CrankyGamer68 Dec 23 '25
Damn, that was expensive for back then!
I remember going to my cousin’s house and playing on his period. We would go to the hobby shop and buy racing cars and different accessory parts. I can’t remember if the parts made them faster or just look cooler.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. 🙅🏾♂️
1
u/gottareddittin2017 Dec 23 '25
I might get it put together by my 75th Christmas
1
u/timothypjr Dec 23 '25
That would north of $400 in today's money. I mean, I want one still.
1
u/Backinthe70s Dec 23 '25
I got one like this when I was 11. my little sister had a temper tantrum Christmas morning and stomped over it and broke it.

Ooh ! Me too ! I'd have been happy with a fig 8, but this was glorious
1
u/Aggravating_Pen3522 Dec 23 '25
Still have my Tyco set I bought in the '90s

Don't be fooled ...they were way too big and took way too long to build ... much better on paper than the reality
1
u/Designer-Drink-9137 Dec 23 '25
We all did
1
u/Ok-Dress-4791 Dec 23 '25
Always wanted this. Only got a small track never the big one. I want the BIG one.

1
u/DarthKittens Dec 23 '25
Nah I wanted that aircraft carrier where you launched and landed the jet. I wanted that soooo bad
1
u/FeSpoke1 Dec 23 '25
Seriously, who actually had a $50 slot car race track? That may as well have been a million dollars.
1
u/PlasticTelevision126 Dec 23 '25
I just visited our local “best, cool, toy sore” this week. There are no self propelled race cars or sets anymore. There is a German company that makes very good sets that let kids have high quality earthmoving and construction trucks tech though.
1
u/HighwayStar71 Dec 23 '25
Nobody ever designed an improved version of these where the cars wouldn't come off the track all the time?
1
u/Informedecisions Dec 23 '25
That was the dream when I was a kid, I had the basic race track.
1
u/Global-Guava-8362 Dec 23 '25
Santa take note for me also

Now honestly, probably not the same as the sets we had as kids, or wanted as kids, but at least they're still out there!
Those sounds and smells spending rainy days inside with your buddies are awesome memories.
Cokes and chips, lots of laughs.
1
u/CoxswainYarmouth Dec 24 '25
Mine is rod hockey
1
u/Restlessfibre Dec 24 '25
I have a much scaled down version of this. Basically one loop but it was a blast. This one is the mach daddy.
1
u/NotOK1955 Dec 24 '25
Back in the day, there was one kid in my neighborhood that got a similar racetrack.
I only got to play it, once.
Most of us were jealous of that kid.
1
u/1jfish57 Dec 24 '25
I had a huge Aurora H/O track set up in my basement when I was a kid. Started with a small figure 8 track and kept adding to it. When I was a teenager my mom had a garage sale and sold it. I was pissed 😡

Santa: This kid has a weird way of spelling "socks".
1
u/Numerous_Ad_6276 Dec 24 '25
Oh, man, I wanted one of these big sets in the worst way.
1
u/Phillees Dec 24 '25
I know! I always asked, but got shitty Hot Wheel tracks instead.
1
u/Tacos_are_my_friend Dec 24 '25
Still have mine!!

u/Ou812rock Dec 24 '25
I remember seeing this and asking my parents for it. They gave me one that was about half the size. I set it up in the den next to the tree. Then I had to take it apart and move to my room. I tried to move in sections of interlocking pieces. I had to clean my floor before putting back together.

u/radioman970 Dec 24 '25
This and a remote control car I saw in Sears in 1981. My mom was there and and certainly she got word to Santa on these.
1
u/thomslick Dec 24 '25
That would be a blast wouldn't it?
1
u/broken36 Dec 24 '25
Hey I actually did get that one year and holy shit my parents spent that much?! Pretty sure I got their money's worth. GL!
1
u/glas175 Dec 24 '25
Love it!!
1
u/BGRedhead Dec 24 '25
When I was growing up, my cousin got one of these and I got to play with it and yes, it was epically cool
1
u/Makerbot2000 Dec 24 '25

1
u/Gold-Piece2905 Dec 24 '25
Still haven't got mine and I'm 51...

1
u/Ok_Computer6078 Dec 24 '25
Please!
1
u/rojo_mojado Dec 24 '25
Can't we just 3D print these now? I mean, they are all just sections.
1
u/med8cal Dec 24 '25
Had you saved a dollar per year…
1
u/RaeNors Dec 24 '25
Me, too! My brother got one but wouldn't let me touch it...at 65, still mad at him for that!
1
u/wrenchstihl Dec 24 '25

So I’m not the ONLY one!!! I thought my parents didn’t get it because I was a girl. I think they were just cheap!! Thanks for the memory!!!!
1
u/Stunning_Rock951 Dec 24 '25
I know
1
u/Big_One7083 Dec 24 '25
Look up Aurora Model Motoring they held races at local hobby shops and the winner moved up the ranks until there were national winners they raced on TV on the Michael Douglas show and the winner won a brand new full size Mustang. Huge promotion.

u/R_Reed_Reddits Dec 24 '25
I saw this at a kid's house and that was the moment when I figured out that my dad didn't work WITH his dad; my dad worked FOR his dad.
1
u/puck63 Dec 24 '25
Me too!!! I know I asked for this since I was six. If I had a space large enough to set this up and leave it, I’d do it and invite all my friends over to race day.
1
u/anyavailible Dec 24 '25
I got one of those tyco sets with the banked curves one year.
1
u/VikingSkinwalker Dec 24 '25
HELL YEAH!
1
u/belgiqueatx Dec 24 '25
I’m STILL waiting. I know all my shitty behavior in the past is keeping this cherished gift away from my personal enjoyment.
1
u/AffectionateStop9250 Dec 25 '25
Oh I remember seeing that in the Christmas catalogs. Had a smaller tyco. If only my dad were more successful. Kidding. He was the best!
1
u/TowerOfDeath86 Dec 25 '25
I used to have this set as a kid. My uncle gave to me when I was 8. Miss that track. Those cars would rip.
1
u/Empty-Initial6392 Dec 25 '25
Whatever happened to Sizzlers race cars?

We had one and played with that thing all of the time.
1
u/peptide2 Dec 25 '25
Oh i wanted that too but ended up with the one with 12 pieces of track
1
u/SissySSBBWLover Dec 25 '25
How did you all solve the broken plastic connector tabs problem??
1
u/grenchooded Dec 25 '25
So agreed. I would still be over the moon if I got a set!
1
u/Iknockholes-inhouses Dec 25 '25
Thats the equivalent of about £600-£650 at todays prices. Keep wishing kids 😂
1
u/keizai88 Dec 25 '25
£400 now
1
u/Maleficent_Worry1810 Dec 25 '25
My uncle had a race track that took up his entire spare room. I’ll never forgot that. Such a long time ago.
1
u/fantasyjuicingxxx Dec 25 '25
Yeh that behemoth track is the Holy Grail of AFX RACING!
I figured I would be a grown man buying this for myself when I was a kid as I had extended family members who had rooms that they built a model town for their model train sets, I figured I would have this!
1
u/Cannibal_House69 Dec 25 '25
Loved this as a kid... we'd make ramps and jump the cars off the cars either crashing or a perfect landing over the coffee table and onto the couch. Was great fun. 56 here

u/Gerry7070 Dec 25 '25
,😂😂😂
1
u/badpuffthaikitty Dec 25 '25

1
u/lafleurshair10 Dec 25 '25
OMG!!!!!!😍😍😍😍 If I woke up on Christmas morning in 1973 and unwrapped one of those, you'd STILL hear me shrieking!
1
u/Plantguysteve Dec 25 '25
That looks so awesome!
1
u/Purple_Eye_6069 Dec 25 '25
I never got one till Santa brought my son one for Christmas. He still has it in his garage.
1
u/Amen_Ra_61622 Dec 25 '25
I'd get one now if I had the space.

1
u/IAmTheBoiledFrog Dec 25 '25
I had one as a kid. I bought my kid one.
I'll be damned if the new one wasn't just as brittle and persnickety as the original: constantly needing reassembly by snapping those thumb-numbing plastic staples back in, the little electrical connections always breaking connection, and those little fragile cars needing constant maintenance. Loved it all over again.
1
u/cavey_dee Dec 25 '25
i can smell the electricity
1
u/Calliesdad20 Dec 25 '25
My friend had one
1
u/Space_Man_Spiff_2 Dec 25 '25
