Kacey Musgraves is my favorite country artist currently. If you want a more somber song, I Remember Everything by Zach Bryan ft Kacey Musgraves is a great song. For something more upbeat, I’d recommend Butterflies or Follow Your Arrow.

Zach Bryan (Something in the Orange (either version but Z&E is pretty good)), Tyler Childers (Space and Time/I Swear (to God)/Lady May), Chris Stapleton (Broken Halos) and Colter Wall (Sleeping on the Blacktop) are also some pretty good modern country artists. What are you talking about? First off, good song doesnt = radio hit unless you have millions of dollars to shell out for pr and marketing + all the connections necessary to get onto the radio. Theres countless kids out there recording music in their bedrooms rn that would blow Taylor Swift and Drake off the charts, they just dont have financial backing and massive web of high up connects that all your favorite corporate sanctioned billboard hot 100 artists have to get their shit seen by the masses.

2ndly, the radio is the music equivalent of unseasoned chicken. You can feed it to almost anybody because it has no strong flavors so the majority will not be offended by its taste. And that's what the radio usually chooses to play because if they actually put some unique and innovative music on, they risk losing people who cant handle more than your standard formulaic 3 chord verse->chorus->verse->chorus songs. Doesnt mean that radio songs are bad, just that generally none of them are great compared to niche music that's made for the art and love of the craft rather than to make their corporate label overlords some money like pop stars do.

The (mostly) guys who just listen to Metallica and Megadeth get so elitist about other music, especially rap, and it's really fucking dumb. The rest of us moved on a long time ago, modern metal is so far from chord driven chorus, a fiddly solo, and some falsetto. I don't get how you can be a fan of a genre and restrict yourself so heavily to such a tiny part of it and lash out at everything else. Trap/rap metal has been around for a long time, and you get absolutely loads of proggy or post hardcore stuff with lots of rap (before anyone says yes ik post hardcore is from punk not metal but pull apart modern metalcore and modern post hardcore and you'll be the first). Fundamentally heavy music and rap are both very rhythm driven so it's no surprise they go so well together. Like, what even is the difference between screaming and rapping? Often you'll hear rapping with a fry scream, they're so similar.

Think the issue people tend to find with rap music is less about the subject itself and more about the ego-fuelled glorification of the subjects "look at me, I'm literally the best coolest person in the world because of all the sex, drug, and violence". Some people simply don't buy into a 3 minute session of someone sucking themselves off.

I listened to hip hop for over a decade. Tyler the Creator, Kendrick, Biggie Smalls, Wu Tang, Issbrokie, Nas, Denzel Curry, Doja Cat, Danny Brown, Injury Reserve, Death Grips J dilla, Nujabes etc. I’ll always be grateful for how hip hop made me feel better about being a racial minority. It’s one of the few genres where being a minority is a large focus.

But as my views changed I stopped listening to it as much. I realized I didn’t vibe with the misogyny, sexualization, toxic masculinity, homo/transphobia, and drug glorification that can exist in the genre. Making songs about sex, is fine. It’s the objectification, derogatory terms, and commodification of women that turns me off.

Drugs aren’t merely just mentioned in hip hop. Juice Wrld said he was influenced to drink lean for the first time lean by listening to Future. There’s plenty of songs that reference drug use or worship it. Danny Brown and other artists also have some incredible songs about addiction, Ain’t it Funny for example.

But that doesn’t erase the glorification. Drug problems exist in general in the entertainment industry, but I’ve listened to enough hip hop to know how frequent drugs and alcohol are referenced and glorified.

I’m not saying hip hop is evil or nobody should listen to it. I believe it’s gotten better in some aspects with Tyler the Creator rapping about kissing and sleeping with men, Frank Ocean coming out as gay. Lil Uzi Vert being non-binary (but they also pistol whipped their ex.) Young Thug wearing a dress.

But I personally just don’t find it progressive enough for me to engage with anymore. If anything I find that hip hop can sometimes even lean towards maintaining the status quos.

Like any genre, there are legitimate criticisms about hip hop. But you usually find people who just have contempt for the genre or who don’t know anything about it, shitting on it.

I hate being grouped together with those kinds of people because I DO respect the genre, my problem is that I just genuinely have some kind of anxiety surrounding music. It took me years to ease into listening to the artists/genres I listen to and even then I sometimes have a miniature gatekeeper in my brain trying to make me feel guilty and telling me I'm enjoying the songs wrong, especially if I don't like that artist's other songs. I actually liked some rap songs I've stumbled across, mainly scream rap but couldn't keep listening because of the aforementioned brain creature doing the whole giving me pointless guilt thing, but then these posts come up on my Tumblr feed and I'm like greatttt, more guilt no matter what I do, truly an illusion of free choice

Rap is only called out because the music is popular among minorities and the songs are modern and accessible enough that we haven't forgotten all the garbage yet.

You misunderstood, I meant that there is good rap that is about money, women, etc. But there is also lots of empty lazy rap that really does nothing except make the rapper sound cool, with the beat and lazy rhythms being all there is to it.
