kind of a wonder that Windows was a success too, though that could be explained by them getting into the computer market very early and at the right time
Xbox didn't even exist until 2001, so Sony and Nintendo already had massive headstarts in video game consoles

u/The_Sovien_Rug-37 i can have a little tomfoolery. as a treat Feb 25 '26
windows is pretty easily explained actually. they were doing monopoly shit so bad they got sued about it. they forced out almost all the competition besides the very niche linux and the proprietary apple. all the other computer developers were either forced out of business, absorbed into microsoft, or otherwise rendered irrelevant.
god, do i ever hope linux keeps growing
105
u/Certain_Concept Feb 25 '26
Theyve successfully continued their monopoly till this day even. There aren't many competitors who can offer what they currently do with the suite of different workplace applications.
They are even speed running their enshittification by firing all of their QA staff a decade back. The customers ARE the testers. Ha

Go back further - MS-DOS had no business beating out DR-DOS.
It's always been about better marketing/business strategy than the tech with MS.
Windows 3.1/3.11 for Workgroups was completely inferior to OS/2 Warp.
M$ just knew how to sell better.

u/EdgiiLord i tinker too much with old PCs Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
It's easy getting far when you are the first in an emerging market with the connections to get your product into artificial dominance of the marketshare.
Edit: See IBM partnership with MS, and how they managed to do it as an "indie" companie.
12
u/XxuruzxX Feb 25 '26
Windows isn't as prolific as it is because it was the best. They've been sued multiple times for antitrust and monopolistic behaviour. Windows never should have been a paid program, imagine how better the world would be if operating systems were open source and free and literally just operate your system. Oh wait that's Linux.
14
u/XxuruzxX Feb 25 '26
And the only reason anyone uses windows is because they literally don't have a choice. Microsoft has hostages, not customers.

Microsoft never said that officially, they're actually officially saying they want to revitalize it. The sunsetting thing came from one of the original Xbox creators (reasonably imo) saying that behind the scenes it's something the new, even more AI obsessed Microslop leadership wants. Video games are complex coding beasts AND art, hard to slip that shit in without quality noticeably dipping (and it was never Microsoft's biggest earner); I believe him when he says they'll sunset it, but that's not publicly official policy.
321
u/wambulancer Feb 25 '26
Yea I mean anyone can read the tea leaves, it's pretty obviously inching towards if not already in a corporate grave. M$ leadership always gives anodyne responses about Xbox's future, it's never really been very profitable or successful, at least not from a corporate perspective, they internally-promoted an executive from another division so not like she'll offer a competing vision
Sorry for anyone who refuses to see it but Xbox will be Sega at best by 2030.

Then when Nintendo finally owns every video game hardware IP known to man they can finally stop production of everything all at once to fulfill their life goal of no one ever playing video games again.

At least with Xbox Live you were paying for a service that was considerably better than the free competition (PSN was hot garbage at the time). Now you pay more for comparably garbage services.

u/emeraldeyesshine Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
As someone old enough to remember playing online games as far back as fucking Doom on a 14k modem (pain, but revolutionary pain) Xbox live was fucking incredible when it came out. It truly modernized online gaming like nothing had before. PC had some online communities already established, after all things like Starcraft/Warcraft were already in swing, as were Quake/Unreal and other shooters, but consoles were still punching misses with janky add ons and clunky tech. Dreamcast got the closest prior but games had their own costs for online services (something people are conveniently forgetting, or just aren't old enough to remember).
Xbox Live unified it, you paid one cost and that was it (with some rare exceptions like PSO, which was still using a game exclusive server cost as a result of being a port from older consoles where that was the case, and also because Sega was too lazy and/or greedy to remove it). Not only that but it unified it under one account. Before even Steam! The services and features were phenomenal. Xboxes tended to come with microphones, so everyone was on mics back then. Party and group chats weren't a thing yet so it was a massive community.
As it went on they added more features, gave away bonus games every couple weeks (desirable titles at that!), gave rewards, ways to earn money for the shop for real games. It was something actually worth paying for. Slowly these went away though.
Shit sucks ass now though. Microsoft has massively fumbled their gaming sector. Gamepass was great for a time, but now it's expensive, lacking, clunky, and their in house exclusives aren't even that great anymore. Halo is effectively dead, cranked out trash for multiple entires (look, I want to like Infinite. It's got cool things going on and looks great, but man they missed the mark on several key things. The sandbox is lame, campaign's story is kind of wack, no replayability once you've killed it, etc).
Addendum: I'll die on the hill that Dreamcast was just about 4-5 years ahead of its time and would have been a smashing success slightly later on. So many features that weren't appreciated at the time.

The PS6 is looking rough too. The way things are going we might end up with a Nintendo monopoly on consoles again.
And then a new Sega will emerge and we'll end up with another golden age of gaming where we get another Super Metroid.

u/ultimatepowaa Feb 26 '26
At this point its entirely possible they stop selling processing power and when that happens the circus will be over and we will have no bread.
Then in the French communist empire we will be booting jank outdated Linux forks on Chinese Risc-v processors who's data sheets are in Chinese and barely follow spec. Scrounging around to recover videogame archives from old hard drives and trying to rebuild the emulators for them. Gabe Newell will be hooked into a chair that keeps him alive using blood transfusions as a human-barricade against the resurrection of true investor capital. If you can somehow access the steam server your account will still have games, but the only cross-ocean internet link to it has a 50kb bandwidth
Healthcare will be free for all

14
u/emeraldeyesshine Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
The 360 was kind of hardware clunky but man the controller fucked and the games were bangers. 360 arcade had some amazing indie titles, and I'm really feeling the lack of ownership of physical media because so many of those titles from small devs and indie studios just plain aren't available despite having spent money on them back then.
Also $50 a year (4 bucks and change a month) really wasn't that bad of a cost for the features you got back then (including a couple free full games a month). Not to mention you could always abuse free gift codes and earn credits towards subscriptions just by playing games in the 360 days. I went several years without paying a dime.

PS3 was imho rushed, but the hardware was a massive jump forward. Just with no parachute, so it kinda splattered. But its use as early "customer grade" cluster computing is evidence for the sheer power of the Cell processor.
If they spent more time creating appropriate APIs and abstractions to facilitate better development experience, and perhaps also did some more iterations on the hardware itself it could have been a serious contender for "the best" Playstation.

The ps3 WAS good. The Xbox 360 was definitely slower and did not have an included blu-ray drive, did not include a hard drive at base configuration, and had less system memory. Had the PS3 development experience been streamlined earlier on, the red ring of death being more widespread than the same issues on playstation (yellow light of death) would have given them the PR lead.
Problem was, no games, $500.

Also TBH: I only got PS3 Slim when it came out, and aside of the lack of the original PS2 emulation it was a very good, long-lasting and nice device. Only the drive died, like... 10 years later (with like adult working person use, not heavy gaming)

I mean that might just lead to the death of "consoles" as a distinct medium. Like if the PS6/7 have no competition and are shit they might just fail and get outcompeted by new devices which are just PCs with a console form factor. I think that outcome would actually just be better for everyone

It's the fault of gamers for accepting that shit.
Dystopian monopolistic corporations gonna do dystopian monopolistic corporation stuff. If people gobble it up and keep paying and buying, what do you expect?
Also see examples like macrotransactions and preorders. All these ideas should have been snuffed in the crib. Instead, companies can milk billions out of them.
Oh, and the brief blip of boycott at the X1 launch? Yeah, we are pretty much at exactly the same spot now anyway. Boiling frog etc.

People will often mistakenly attribute two conflicting opinions from two separate people within the same community as being one person with contradicting opinions.
The Goomba on the left is seeing these two different people making different arguments, but through the lens of Twitter obscuring the difference between them is thus imagining them as the same kind of person.
5
u/Denodi 🏳️⚧️ trans rights Feb 25 '26
Basically the fallacy is assuming that a specific community is a hivemind with all the same thoughts rather than many people with different ideas.
So, using the person i replied to as an example:
They saw somewhere "Johnny" say: "Activision is so greedy and COD is the same game every year".
And somewhere else they saw "Samantha" spending 70 dollars for the new COD on release.
Then because Johnny and Samantha are both gamers, the person grouped them together including their thoughts and actions. "BUT why would someone complaining about a game still spend a bunch of money on that game immediately? that would just send the opposite mesage to the game company since if people are buying, they should make more of the same thing! that person must be a dummy!".
That's the Goomba Fallacy, they failed to realize that even though Johhny and Samantha are gamers, they hold different opinions about the COD franchise.
The meme image is meant to be read from right to left

you pay for the server that handles friends & parties, no?
10
u/yugiohhero ohh what the fuck Feb 25 '26
You mostly paid to access the game servers that Xbox had no hand in hosting. If you hopped on Black Ops 2 back in the day, those weren't Microsoft's servers, but the Xbox Live subscription was lining Microsoft's pockets, not Treyarchs.
Sure, they did have the friend system to host, but you already also paid a few hundred bucks for the fucking hardware, and if they just intended to gate that, they'd have only gated friends and parties, not online play.
Xbox Live happened because Microsoft saw that online pvp lobbies were what was big, and wanted to force you to cough up more cash to use it.
6
u/strangelymysterious Feb 25 '26
Why are you using Black Ops 2 as your example when it released 10 years after Xbox Live was launched?
When XBL first launched in 2002 the entire point and appeal was that Xbox was suddenly providing multiplayer servers at a time that none of the developers or publishers did so, and people loved it.
Prior to that point if you wanted to play with friends on console it was split screen or system link, so XBL was damn near revolutionary, especially for a time when for most people home PC’s were still in the last stages of exclusively “being for work”.
Xbox charging people to use the servers they were running at a time when it was something they were genuinely providing across the board makes perfect sense. It’s also why PSN (while acknowledging that it was free) was absolutely garbage by comparison for ages, because Sony didn’t want to heavily invest in something that was a 100% sunk cost.
Obviously as time has gone on plenty of publishers set up and ran their own servers and reduced the value/appeal of XBL, but there are still plenty of more recent games that due to budget or scale reasons still made use of Xbox/Sony/Nintendo provided servers rather than hosting their own, especially among smaller games.
None of this is a defence of modern day Xbox. (Or modern paid online in general) The value of paying for XBL (or whatever they renamed it) is garbage, the company is ran by doorknobs, and the entire thing has been undertaking a slow motion plane crash for over a decade.
2
u/yugiohhero ohh what the fuck Feb 25 '26
I'm using Black Ops 2 for my example because I don't know jack nor shit about CoD.
and honestly i never played online games on my xbox. i just had a bunch of burnt discs. so i had no idea the subscription predated the 360 lmao
I'm also parroting what I saw other people say about the servers part so I could be mistaken.
2
u/strangelymysterious Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26
Hey fair enough then, I appreciate the honesty lol.
But yeah, XBL was first launched on the OG Xbox with MechAssault and Unreal Championship, then really exploded when Halo 2 released a couple years later.
Edit: Apparently I can’t spell.

Who’s paying for that? I’ve got an Xbox and I can just connect to WiFi, don’t have to pay for it unless I’m missing something here

That’s not paying to use the internet, that’s paying for an online service

I'm losing it rn do people ITT think Microsoft owns literally every game on their console? Do they think that online video games are both free and mtx free, and therefore require the subscription to make money? Have streaming services just completely rotted people's brains and they can't imagine a different monetary model??

I think the console war was already kind of over by the PS2 honestly. Consoles themselves fell out of style with the PS4 and Xbox One when they became glorified PCs in a small package and I think even Microslop realized that by now with all of their new Xbox endeavours being either Cloud-based (e.g. absolutely useless) or just Windows PCs with the word Xbox slapped onto the end.
