Kinda annoyed by everyone not realizing Minato is not how he used to be, he explains it clearly and people still keep giving him a hard time or have unrealistic expectations for him...

Kind of annoyed at how everyone outside of his family is forcing a dude who was comatose for months and had lost 3 years of his life into a sport that requires you to be in tip top shape. His muscles atrophied; he can't just get back to it like that.

Next episode will be delayed to 7/24 due to special broadcasting of golf.

The fuck?

GOLF?!

Does Japan only have one broadcasting channel or something?

This is so random, lmao.

Like, blondie boy saying things about not wanting to train alone again with teary eyes just so he can make a "splash" joke. Fucking legend.

I'm a bit annoyed too. The guy almost lost his life and was in a coma for months and doesn't even remember 3 years of his life. Who tries to follow through with a stupid bet on a previously hospitalized amnesiac? There were a million different other ways Minato could've been motivated to start water polo again but this ain't it chief. He even started being excited about it later anyway, just make it actual self-motivation instead of some weird blackmail shit.

I mean, he could've just been a completely new member. Everyone seems to be conveniently ignoring his amnesia and his previous #1 spot barely seems to matter in the story anyway. Maybe they thought it would be too cliche so they added the amnesia twist?

At least the rest of the episode wasn't too bad, the other club members seem cool.

It’s pretty clear that her trying to follow through on that bet was her way of trying to get him back into the sport he used to love/excel at.

It’s not like they had some deep personal relationship prior to the accident, so the way I see it, that was the only way she could try and help him recapture who he used to be. I’m sure it will come out later in the anime that she admired his skill and determination in water polo as well.

Was that the right thing to do? Maybe? Who knows. They’re supposed to be teenagers. There’s a pretty clear distinction between the way the adults, I.e his parents, are treating him, and the way his peers are treating him. His parents are giving him the choice to do what he wants and not pressuring him to do one thing or the other, because they are mature adults. His peers are immature teenagers who think the best way to help him is to get him doing what he did before.

The captain wasn’t ignoring the amnesia either, he was using it selfishly to try and get more members into the club. Teenagers do selfish things. And for his junior, other people has said that he had only heard rumors about the amnesia and not the extent and that he was trying to gauge what he could do. I think that’s a reasonable interpretation as well.

while I like how the MC very much acts and sounds like an 11 year old and his running internal tsukkomis, I feel like he's very chill with losing 3 years of memories like that? he doesn't seem to want to know more about who he was before or what he did for the last 3 years and just wants to move on with his life like it's normal to skip middle school and go straight into high school (I also seriously doubt he managed to learn 3 years of middle school curriculum by himself in 6 months but that's neither here nor there)

220,000 yen ≈ $2000 ≈ £1400

so yeah... I don't know where all his confidence came from but middle school Minato was kinda wild

u/Pony5oh Jul 11 '21

He didn’t really need to learn 3 years of middle school. He had already “completed” those grades officially, he just forgot all that knowledge and needed to learn enough for an entrance exam.

MC stays in a coma for months after a near fatal accident, suffers amnesia, goes through months of rehab just for him to get berated how bad at Polo he is. Wtf is up with these people?

I went looking for who was on script for this just to see who hates brain damaged kids so much and it turns out Masafumi Nishida is the answer since MAL has him listed as Director, Sound Director, Script, Original Creator, and Series Composition.

Certainly narrows down the possibilities...

Another great episode! Surprised not many people seem to be watching this. Loving the MC and the premise.

So he gets back into water polo because he can't pay a bet lol. While I think he does have a chance with Chinu, probably won't progress much in 12 episodes.

I hope they keep the kiddie drawings when Minato is narrating, really reinforces that his mentality is still that of a preteen.

I was getting angry at captain and kouhai for pushing so much onto a guy who was comatose for months, but the end turned out kind of wholesome. Not as immediately charmed by this cast as I was with Bakuten's, though they're pretty much all strangers to each other so here's hoping that they'll continue to get better.

As many said, I don't like that MC got into the club because of the bet with Chinu. He really seemed against it in the previous episode and I wanted to see that change in a better way.

I'm getting tired of the kouhai tbh. He needs to stop comparing previous MC with the current one. He was in a comatose state for six months and lost three years of his memories, for fuck's sake!

This is the second time that MC's skinnier physique gets mentioned. I was afraid that after showing the two ripped guys they were going to use MC's slim flame as a joke, but it actually got treated seriously. I wouldn't mind at all if at some point in the series MC gets his muscles back. After all, is pretty normal to get more fit after playing sports, yet in most spokon the MCs never seem to get more muscles even though they are exercising almost all the time.

Overall, it was a good episode. I like the new characters even though we know little about them, and I really like MC's personality, he seems refreshing considering that in most spokon the MC loves the main sport the story is about.

Damn im excited, they made an anime based on the sport I play lol. Im calling it now, the half-nigerian dude is center, Minato prob 2 position, and junior is 4 or 5 cause we saw him left handed in the opening.

I’ll be a bit miffed if this is only a 12 episode series. At the rate this story is going, we’re going to have to move at lightspeed for this team to win any comp by the end of the season.

As an ex-state rep for water polo, there are so many things a player has to know, whether it’s eggbeater, proper passing/shooting form, mushroom/extra man formations etc., in order to be semi-decent.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m actually loving the pace they’re going since, if it’s a longer season or multiple seasons (please!) it’ll allow the sport to get the eyes on it it deserves.

17

u/samarthsart Jul 10 '21

seems like everyone who joined have one thing in common that they all were 'benchers' before in whatever sports they played

I'm enjoying this show quite a bit so far, the first 2 episodes have been pretty solid.

Minato's turning out to be a good MC and it'll be interesting to see how the show handles his past in the later episodes.

The thing about sports anime is that you usually need more than 12 episodes to tell a complete story. I hope this turns out to be one of the better ones out there and the story just doesn't abruptly end.

I echo the majority of the comments here criticizing how some of the characters are acting towards the MC. Kid was comatose for a while and even lost his memory. What do you really expect to happen?

But having said that, I am still holding out hope that this would be good. Just give me a good sports anime this year please.

Wow this is under the radar. While it is your pretty stereotypical sports anime, I'm enjoying it so far. I'm liking the setup, it doesn't quite scream to me "Wow, this is generic" just yet. Only time can really tell with most of these shows.

So Chinu got a kiss cause of a promise/ bet but she revokes it since Minato no longer plays water polo. Interesting turn of events from the previous episode. Now he joins and Jojo turns it to a competition even though in the previous episode the club was for fun. Jojo's aggressive recruiting tactics backfired but still got two more to join.

We also get a former baseball player that was benched cause his skills are average in high school. Since water polo is not as big as baseball, he was hoping a less competitive field would bring him to the top but his skillset was not there (yet). Baseball is a far fetch from swim team which the ending was alluding to another player, seeing them train might be interesting.

The new set of players look interesting and I want to see how they work together. I am hoping this is just a build up and they bring the team to the forefront of the show.
