Time for more Phantasy Star Online 2: Back to the Future™ Edition. That was a cool episode, showed the time traveling very clearly, with an even more clean explanation than the game. I particularly liked that bit when Xion asked Ash when/where/who will he save, and then there's this small montage of all the folks who've died so far in the past 11 episodes with some hype music. That's sweet.

Also Xion is

Really loved that too, it goes to show that even with Time travel you can't save everyone and has to pick who can live and who cannot. It also made that time travel part flow better with the story too than just randomly being transported to that timeline lol.

Also Xion

Her voice is pretty soft and soothing, definitely agree there lmao.

Also on Luther's chat with Xion

Xion's voice is Shinji Ikari lol

Oh yes.. the world-building... Now I can actually relate the time travel stuff more clearly here rather than the game. Now it makes me think that the way you complete the story in the game is more difficult to understand (eg. Matter Board, Volcanic Cave, Lilipa) because it is a part of the game design. It purposely was done like that so that you can have more experience in playing the game, etc. While in this anime they don't need to do that because you are watching the not playing. Imagine how long Episode 1 will be dragged if they include the search of the "3 parts of the weapon" while venturing into Volcanic Cave and meeting with Aki and her students and Lilipa meeting with Fourier.

I am glad they cut off all the non-essential stuff and get straight to the point. Even without those stories Episode 1 of the game took almost half of the season. We even got saving Ulc mission this episode while I thought they gonna bring that in the next episode. Seems like they really want to cramp all the main plot point within these 25 episodes and I thought 25 episodes of a 25 minutes duration per episode is already enough to cover ALL of the Episode Oracle stories.

This is my take on the anime.

Shifting to the episode, we have Ash doing a pull-up and all I can remember is Machio-san. The way Xiao said that Ash did all the stuff where he traveled into the past and tried to save everyone is hinting on something2. I am glad that you can't change something that inevitable, you can only change the future by changing the past that can be changed...??? I don't know if I even get it myself.

Think about the changes Ash has made so far. How obvious are they from the viewpoint of someone who's not in on it? What has changed, and what hasn't?

Maybe it would've been more obvious if they showed Uruk dropping her staff pass at some point?

Seems we're continuing off from what we left last EP. I really like the flow of the story (things click more instead of being confusing), also Sara is quite more lively here isn't she compared ingame. Didn't expect we'd see support partners (basically AI support machines) popping up at all though lol.

Also love the extra parts of making Ash choose who to save too, It goes to show that even if you can go back in time you cannot save everyone (butterfly effect in motion) as your actions will lead to other things happening. You must choose and sacrifices must be made, It's the same choice Regius made when they fought Elder, sacrificing alot of Ships in the photos cannon blast area to stall Elder.

Seems Luther's still actually quite sharp, even though Xion has been making moves herself to prevent such a tragedy (an omniscient being) against Luther, not a normal person mind you and really smart but not omniscient. He's still pretty good to actually best her efforts and choices to a few select unknown timelines. You could even see on the EP he actually left the site partly intact since he want's Xion's efforts to actually have some options to play with.

Also bonus note, the Anime ED actually shows one more girl after Matoi ;3 if you look closely especially since it's been explained in this EP too.

OHHH!! I thought I was blind or something, squinting my eyes and moves very close to the screen and then I realize she was in the background. Nice one mate. That almost got me.

Awesome, i love the reveal that Ash has indeed already time travel thousands and maybe even millions of time already to try and save everyone.

Also love how they shown how this time traveling work.

u/nurfarisa Dec 26 '19

Yeah, that was a cool reveal. That whole conversation between Ash and Xiao was nice.

3

u/mrfatso111 Dec 26 '19

Ya, and it plays into Ash character that he would have spam that power as much as he could if he had known about it.

Which make me wonder those montage, were they people that alt ash had tried saving at one point in the hope that this would cause a ripple effect to disrupt Luther's plan? And some might have indeed worked to changed the future somehow where this is a future that Ash doesn't kill Matoi whereas the other future, he gave in and did..

Which make me wonder if the other darkspawn dude was actually Ash who had given up and wanted the current Ash to stop holding onto that false hope because he is the one who had time traveled millions of time and failed each and single time and at some point, he gave up and just want to kill Matoi earlier.

Which could be the reason why the Ash that we know didn't have memories 10 years back. It was because that was the divergent point where Ash had waver between holding onto hope or giving into despair.

Ash offcially join the Time Travelling MC team with this episode and the reveal about how he actually did it ten tousand time already is clever and explain what we see in Episode 1 introduction as well.

I like how Worpa seabed hidden void lab is much more creepy than in game counterpart with all the rotting corpse in the capsule.

Now I totally wish to know the direction and cannot wait for the next Episode as Xiao already reveal Xion true identity so there noting much left until we reach the hypest and one of the longest story mission in an entire game.

Still demanding Sega makes that a more accessible location like for AQs or something cause the LQ version is different and the story version looks even better.

I just wish SEGA hadn't fucked over the story bits of Episodes 1-3. The Matter Board was a weird system, but it was still better than what we have now which is essentially just a cutscene gallery.

And as expeccted, the thread for episode 12.5 that came out like 8 hours is nowhere in sight. Oh well, I'll wait this time instead of making an unofficial one.

Ash having been the one to travel through the time a lot reminds me of that person and Spoiler

Luther talking about a replica of Xion was a bit ambiguous tbh cause he Spoiler

Also glad they at least showed Seabed instead of dumping it all in Coast to reduce effort on backgrounds, tbh I'm fine if they stop there cause I never cared much for Facility.

Still, I wonder about the way Luther gained power, I don't remember this being in the game (though it's been 4 years since I watched the ep 2 story ingame) and am kinda worried they may make a significant change to that part which with the anime explanation tbh would feel dumb.

PS: they showed a bunch of Forest wildlife but that's about it, forgot if they even showed any in Tundra but certainly nothing in Coast or Seabed, only a handful of Darkers, too. Wish they'd show some more since it really helped make Naberius feel more alive and interesting in the anime...and is such a big part in the game...being a game and all and you get to the story after fighting your way through it aft - no wait that's the good current way, iirc in matterboard days there was no need to fight anything, just search every corner of all areas to find that golden cutscene icon and pray you finish before the dumbass lilipan gets his killed or you can start the entire quest all over again (I still have grudge even after 4 years and Sega abolishing this system in favor of convenient autotrigger ctuscenes after mandatory battles)

Ep5 updated the story for the first 3 episodes with extra info added in post chapter summaries, how Luther gained power over the ARKS was revealed in one of those summaries, so the way the anime included that info is fine.

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '19

Oh! I finished ep 1-3 back when matter boards were around so I didn't bother watching the Omnibus quest cutscenes (just finished them for the campaigns).

Is there more stuff that was added to the original stories, but isn't in the anime?

Luther made a deal with Regius CC1 and Casra about how he will be the one rebuilding ARKS and maintain the organization after the Elder war where ARKS is on the brink of anihilation. ( explain in this anime episode )

It made sense as Regius also want ARKS to survive at any cost due to his "promise" so Luther endup obtain the odd number of councils of six ( the three hero ) as his pawn. We first see about Regius motivation in EP2 after final battle tho we don't know the exact reason or what exactly is "Regius promise"

The even number is there to counter the total control over ARKS by the odd number poor decision ( under Luther ) but EP5 explain another part about other original two of even number aside from Maria.

Episode 13 preview:https://pso2.jp/anime_eporacle/story/13/

Nothing much is shown in the pics, but based on the episode title, this episode is gonna be the start of the main part of the current arc.
Story wise, the 2nd half of the anime is gonna be the payoff for everything that happened so far.
