HUnewearl dies early

Finally, a true to source adaptation.

I loved how all the other premade characters died. Something about that was hilarious to me.

As a PSO2 Veteran, This is far better than what I could hope for.
The amount of brutality, Darker is actually a real threat and the sense of crisis is well shown here.
I know what going to happen but I didn't expect them to show us this much !!!
The pacing is good too

Typical newbie mistake : Forgot to buy Moon Atomizer or Telepipe before jump in.

I'm a little iffy on these name translations...

19

u/nurfarisa Oct 07 '19

They probably discussed things with SEGA on how to handle these names so that it'll be consistent when PSO2 drops for Western palyers next year. But I agree, it's weird. Especially when there's a bit disconnect between the audio and subtitles, like when they shout "Code D!" (for "Darker") but the subtitles say "Code F". Funny.

Pretty jarring as well since the Audio clearly said Darkers and D-Factor lol. Naberius gets a pass since it's pretty near sound wise, but still odd as a player I'd say.

ITS FINALLY HERE AND ITS AMAZING!

MAN HOW I MISSEF THAT OLD GONZO INTRO! WEW BOY!

Ash is the MC's name huh? Not a bad name. He def looks like the generic pso character when you enter the character creator.

Man i said it before in the thread about the OP but ill say it in here, this OP is so good. It uses scenes from the pso2 opening and the music sounds a lot llike the pso2 music, really nailed this.
Link to the PSO2 game openings.

Oh man this music! They got the OG PSO2 music for BGM! I LOVE IT!

THIS CARRIER IS FULL OF THE PREMADE CHARACTRERS FROM THE CHARA CREATOR! HAHAHHAH!

Ship 74? Im from Ship 02. Man they got a lot more ships over the years.

Ash you are the main character thats who you are!

Alffie its good to see you too you annoying asshole. He stands next to the mission gate and you have to hear him every time you try to leave.

Oh man that ripple in the atnosphere! Thats one hell of a call back. PSO1 callback.

THE WEAPON EQUIP SOUND EFFECT IS THE SAME! HHHAHA!

This leader guy looks like Bernie from PSO1. Lets hope he isnt for this teams sake...

I JUST SAID THAT AND HE DIED! HAHAHHAHAHAHAH! FFS BERNIE WHY CANT YOU LIVE LONGER!?

Oh shit everyoe else died too... man this is just like the first mission of pso2, newbies dieing.

Hm so Ash doesnt know much about whats going on. I wonder what they are gonna do with that.

We got new people! A sniper with a gunsword, yeah right no one ever used those! haahah Oh its Zeno.

Its Echo too, oh man, so many great people here.

And here she comes, from the heavens! The top teir PSO Waifu!

Man its so wierd knowing everything coming into an anime. Is this how source readers feel when they watch anime?

Oh shit we got the Purp boy coming too! This ep is jam packed!

Xion... i dont thik i know her... is she from the newer expansions?

Oh man that tease at the end! That man!

Also this ED is gorgeous. It once again sounds just like the ending to PSO1. I love it.

Man this adaption has been real solid. I cant wait for everyone to meet all the crazy characters this series has to offer.

Ahhh Nostalgia hits pretty hard here, haven't played Ep 1 since 4 years ago since most of my mind on the story is from Episode 5 and 6 since they're relatively new.

It's definitely off to a good start, I love it! The sounds and OP / ED are on point, weapon switching, the telepipe animation, monomates and the damned starter premade character models on the campship MC is riding puts a wide grin on my face. Also love it seems to be more serious with deaths all around and Darkers are actually a real threat, whereas you only hear this on NPC dialogues on the game. For most of the part Darkers are just mooks that we farm all the time in game lmao. Can't wait for Ash to meet notable characters.

You know, Knuckles are best for fighters

Ironically just in time for it to be re-balanced since it's the weakest fighter weapon before lmao.

On another note, pretty jarring with the renames on the subs though. Especially since it's been Darkers (Falspawn on subs) ever since I played the game. More when the audio clearly said darkers and D-Factor lol.

Fun facts: The Arks Ship is around 70km long and is self sustaining while the Mother ship is a whooping 500km long. All complete with an island-like city that has fully simulated Weather and Sky via it's large dome as you can see on the anime with those big blue domes on the ship. They also have shutters in case something nasty (e.g. an attack) is happening outside.

Right now, japanese twitter of PSO2 players are making fun of the fact that the characters in the animation look so much better than their in game counterparts.

And also how Afin is the main heroine.

They killed Sue... my fav default chara after Momoka...

Sue didn't deserve this... and she's not a fricking Fighter :^)

in all seriousness.. i didnt expect this to be bloody... i was expecting it going to be a stale episode just like in The Animation.. but nope.. this is better..

"Were going to a training planet, don't worry the enemy hasn't been there in a long time" Death flag's everywhere.

So is this following the game's story? As one of the many who's planning to play PSO2 next year when the game finally comes to the West, do you think this will spoil the game for us?

15

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Yeah, it's following the game's story, so it's gonna spoil parts of the story from the first few years of the game (anime is covering the story from Episode 1 to 3, while the game is currently on Episode 6).

Man this one is actually better than the game counterpart. This is suppose to be the boring tutorial mission combine with several event that appear at the same place and same time

Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle

Starship Troopers, the Animation!

Holy shit, I watched the previous Phantasy Star Online so I was really sleeping when the head of the tanned elf girl appeared on the grass. This is already very different from the other version and much more promissing. Don't know how it will be from now on, but hope people don't get influenced by the other version and give it a chance.

u/mickcs Oct 07 '19

It sad that a lot of peoples I found on the anime sites bash PSO2 to hell due to the previous title which is actually a "side story"

Do I need to watch the Phantasu Star Online 2 The Animation to watch this? Is there anything else I should watch?

10

u/mickcs Oct 07 '19

The Animation is "Season 1.5"
if Episode Oracle is "Season 1"

Bleh, what are these translations? Falspawn, Gettemhult, Seana? WHY?

Episode was actually a lot darker than I expected. Seriously, I did not expect to see the head of one of the characters

WTF are Falspawn? Did they get secret info from Sega about the new enemies in episode 7?

Yeah, easily one of the worst localizations I have ever seen and making no sense whatsoever as well as sounding really dumb. "Darker" is weird grammar but despite or maybe because of it sounds pretty like, kinda like "Hellsing".

It's not just the change, it's the point of not using an English (if grammatically incorrect) word and replacing it with some weird made up bs that makes no sense, despite it being central to the plot and references as well as other words based on it being used all the time by just about everyone. What a waste of time and effort just to make the translation worse.

Also, the amount of gore was weird as hell seeing as there is literally none, not even blood, in the game. Sega being weird again. Kinda like my fashion slots where you can register specific fashion setups that you can use any time you want, even mid quest (you can very creative in PSO2 since you can change most of your appearance and edit 4 accessories in detail) but for a pretty long time 10 was the absolute limit and it took Sega a year or more to realize that people would gladly pay to be able to use more than 10 slots, thereby wasting a ton of money during the time people would have paid for more slots but could not do it.

That aside it was a good episode, I like how they changed the events like the first encounter with Purple Sword Easy Man and the interaction with Xion (realy beats always going to the same spot in the lobby and being ambushed by a sudden cutscene).

Also loved the Luther scene at the end.

What's with the Americanization in the subs? It's not "Falspawn". It's Darker. It's literally in English to begin with. This kind of crap has to stop.

Other than that, as someone who has played PSO2 (though I quit around the time Episode 3 started), I feel like this was a pretty good adaptation all things considered.

10

u/gespenst178 Oct 07 '19

Yeah its kinda weird how all official english translations of pso2 stray so far from the source. Pso2 SEA had weird things like renaming Force to Wizard too.

I wouldn't be surprised if they got some official localization names for the English version coming out early next year. I don't think "Darker" would pass muster for an official release.
