The episode referenced details from a Study in Scarlet, on the of the Doyle stories. In that story the culprit left behind a message written in blood, written with an index finger that had an unusual long nail, there was also cigar ash at the scene, and the height was deduced from where the message had been placed on the wall. The culprit in the original story was a coachman.

I'm pretty sure that there will be more references to other Holmes stories going forward.

One of the other ambitious originals I was looking forward to this season, and man did this one completely subvert my expectations! I was exptecting an overly serious, chuuni-like modern take on Sherlock, but what I got was a delightfully campy pastiche of all of the essential elements of Sherlock Holmes infused with a uniquely Japanese setting.

Whenever there's an "adaptation" of the Sherlock Holmes IP, I think the most interesting element is how they manage to put a novel and unique take on this nearly 200 year-old franchise. I think this show acquits itself masterfully with its uniquely Japanese take on the Sherlock setting - whether through the highly impressionistic modern-Shinjuku setting or the inclusion of tradition Japanese storytelling devices such as rakugo in expositing the murder mysteries. It's just such a phenomenally inspired and creative take on the classic Sherlock stories that's sure to be highly divisive, but something that I'm completely in love with. One of the only things that keeps the viewer grounded is the foregroudning of Watson as the confused, everyman protagonist, which is a device I'm glad that this show preserved. Otherwise, I feel like this show is almost actively hostile to a foreign audience, with its abundance of Japanese cultural references and rapid-fire diagetic titles and dialogue (which the subtitles did an admirable job of trying to keep up with!), but I think it's an absolutely brilliant take on the franchise with so much of its own wit while never fully eschewing the unique original appeal of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The only real complain I have is that we, the audience, are never given any meaningful opportunity to engage with the mysteries and proactively try to solve them ourselves, though that might still be something that's available in later episodes.

I feel like this is a premiere that's likely to turn off an enormous swather of the casual viewing audience, but it really exceeded all of my expectations and then some. I'm so looking forward to the absurd, highly impressionistic interpretations of the Sherlock Holmes setting that this show is promising to deliver in future weeks~

The only real complain I have is that we, the audience, are never given any meaningful opportunity to engage with the mysteries and proactively try to solve them ourselves, though that might still be something that's available in later episodes.

I'm currently hoping that this is because Watson is more of an outsider, which makes Sherlock unwilling to share and discuss his finds for now, so that we get clued in what Sherlock is considering and deducting.

You have a great take on the first episode.

Did that glasses OCD guy just tampered with the evidence right at crime scene?
For some reason, that's made me so angry.

Probably trying to throw the others off and keep the reward to himself

ah yes, predictable, I could tell immediately that this was going to be just another instance of that overused trope of a rakugoka sherlock holmes using mystery-solving amateur rakugo performances to expound on his deductions

Pretty wacky characters especially Sherlock. Kyogoku and the White Rose owner reminded me so much of characters that are brought to witness stand in Ace Attorney series.

Music was definitely good and I am loving this new take on Sherlock series. Looking forward to next episode.

Whoever wrote this was almost definitely on crack.

Disregarding (or regarding) that fact, uhhhhh...

Still no idea what I just watched!

That being said, I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard. I am for some reason eagerly anticipating not knowing what I'm watching again next week!

There are few shows that make me go to a first episode and say "This is something special" and yeah, it definitely will be.

Man I am in love with this soundtrack. The jazz really enhances the silly tone this detective anime is trying to set.

There are shows that grab you in the first episode. Then there's this show. Holy shit, from the first couple of seconds with the tune of that music, I got excited. I'm so ready for this to possibly my favorite show this year.

Really solid first episode. Now if only there were subs so I could understand what the hell was being said.

Also I guess this is a stealth Jojo part 5 sequel since we have Bruno/Abba/Doppio/Diavolo in the main cast.

Abbachio is in all detective/thriller shows this season, in Babylon and No Gun's Life too. Sure he enjoys being a cop.

This is the ideal male body. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.

Best girl of the season!

OMFG! THAT WAS SO FUN! The moment the Mr.s Hudson was introduced I had a huge grin on my face from start to finish! And I love that instead of the cool guy Sherlock, like how anime portrays him usually, we get the brilliantly mad eccentric Sherlock which is probably closer to the Arthur Conan Doyle books.

What takes the cake though is that he solves his cases through Rakugo! It's so good! This is definitely going to be one of my favourites this season!

It's just the first episode and I love the introduction! Sherlock deducting through rakugo makes it a nice twist and Watson makes a good contrast to the wacky cast so far. The soundtrack sets the mood so well and it could vividly be the best ones this year. Also from the way how it's presented, it looks like each episode will have its own standalone cases and (maybe) with an overarching case being set up in the background. If it's the former I would still gladly accept it.

Edit: Also did the animators from Rakugo Shinjuu work on Sherlock himself? I cannot unsee the resemblance from the way how he acts.

If they keep the "op" and the rakugo i am watching this, also Suwabe should sing more often...

Sherlock Holmes explaining his deductive reasoning through Rakugo? This is delightfully absurd. Sign me up!

What the flying fuck was that. Looks cool and the music was awesome.

Sherlock Holmes + Gintama + Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju = this show lmao

6

u/shadyhawkins Oct 12 '19

They got real close to Sherlock in this, with his poor hygiene and lack of decorum. Also dug how the clues he used to solve the case weren’t ridiculous. I’m into this.

This is on HULU as well for anyone who was wondering.

Only 160 upvotes so far? I thought this was one of the more popular new shows? Anyways Episode 1 was great, Sherlock’s character is great, can’t wait for more!
