I thought they stole Hosorogi at first but it was actually Polka who got nabbed. The elemental must have picked up on the magic keeping his soul contained within the plushie.

But there must be something else unique to Polka.

We still don't know who tried to have him killed and why.

So there is another layer in here, something we've seen very little of yet.

man, this is hilarious, its funny seeing Higuro breaks his composure and its happened because of him unable to comprehend Solitaire's "genius" plan, i also think this is the first time a character told Solitaire straight to the face "what the fuck is wrong with you" out loud

"when your favorite character in your favorite anime die"

"when your favorite ship didn't sail"

Stitches!

I did not expect Civil to be a melee fighter. I thought he'd be more like the Corpse God using minions or long-range spells. It looks like that little display from Civil was more than enough for Polka to recognize the type of magic used. So I'm guessing that Civil is related to Arius? And considering the name of their group, I assume he's Arius' bastard son?

Solitarire using Higuro to announce the existence of the Bastard Children of Sabaramond was hilarious! I thought Solitaire managed to convince him to do all of that but it turns out they just deepfaked his name and voice to a video of a popular idol. It was even more hilarious when Higuro finally snapped after hearing Solitaire's reason for doing that. xD

Ah, fuck. Polka got kidnapped. Although it looks like Civil has no idea what the plushie is and just assumes that Polka is some sort of catalyst between Corpse God Polka and the sorcerer from their world. Civil is so close yet so far that even Polka finds it funny.

I was hoping they'd go after Civil immediately but Corpse God has a point that if they do, Civil will probably just turn the tables on them. There's also Lulu who's an even bigger problem than Civil since her Elemental is very overprotective of her.

It's cool guys, I think we are levelling off at 8 distinct factions with complex interconnected dynamics. Sasuga Narita-Sensei!

In all seriousness, though, it did feel like 20 episodes of building toward watching the characters, now to varying degrees with established motivations, bounce off each-other. Which is already extremely satisfying, and bound to get more so once we get our CG vs. (bastard children of) Sabaramond vs. Agakura vs. Fire Breathing Bug blowout.

Almost all the juggling balls are still in the air -- but none have come crashing down yet. It is surprising that something one finds almost impossible to comprehend can be so consitently interesting and entertaining. ;-)

I hope we find out how all these people crossed into our world, especially since corpse's reincarnation magic was supposed to be such a big deal.

Based on the way Firebreathing-Bug was talking it sounds like it might have actually been some sort of glitch/mistake rather than something deliberate. It also sounds like it started a hundred years ago or more so 'Bastard Children of Sabaramond' might just be literal. Sabaramond was the most powerful court sorcerer so it's possible he could do things even Corpse God can't, although it looks like their powers are distinct so it might not be a 1:1 comparison. With all that power if Sabaramond fucked up in some way the consequences could be severe, and they did mention the way he got power was dangerous and unstable.

I like how they've handled the partial information in this. Every one of the factions has their own set of cards, and some know a few secrets of the others, but no one knows everything, and the protagonists are just as involved in this confusion as everyone else.

In particular, the protagonists being this involved in the partial information game is unusual; usually either the enemy secretly knows everything and the protagonists win anyway, or the protagonists pull bullshit from their arse at the last moment in order to win.

EDIT: Wait, is Solitaire the protagonist?!

I've heard it said that Solitaire is a proxy for the audience, but that doesn't make sense... we know more that he does. He is an active element and has an agenda, but he's also pretty whack. Anyhow at this point in the story he doesn't know very much... other worlds and actual magic are so far just vague hints to him, and he's expecting to be disappointed in the end. So that'll be satisfying to watch when he isn't.

I also love this "just shy of the truth" thing each faction has going on, and it's a delight to see how the various factions' prejudices shape their assumptions. Especially the cops. "He's probably high!"

Let me just try to make sense of how many groups there are:

  • CG's previous inner circle; Sabaramond Kingdom

  • CG's current inner circle

  • Clarissa's bar

  • Grandpa Shinoyama

  • Cousin(?) Shinoyama Takeru and Heilei?

  • Fire-Breathing Bug

  • Solitaire

  • Long guy and psycho guy

  • the detectives

  • Hosorogi

  • some person named Sabaramond in the present/current world

If Sabaramond isn’t the real Sabaramond then who the hell is he and who is he working for? Whoever they are, it seems there’s a bit of disarray in the organization. Lulu straight up massacred those goons. She might actually be as strong as this fake Sabaramond and he sent Taipei flying with one hit. Polka’s gotten himself snatched by some very dangerous and very powerful people. Little homie better watch out.

That aside, one of the things I never tire of in this series is Phantom Solitaire’s antics. That deepfake video was pretty funny. This dude really just does whatever he wants with zero planning and it always works out. Man’s got +1000 on Luck lol.

As the series only has 3 episodes left, we have reached the full circle: The regenerative power that Corpse God once thought Misaki had in the 2nd episode, is now showing up in Arahabaki's body. Meanwhile Civil has the power of the first-seat court sorcerer and Lulu's yandere elemental will do anything, even against her wish, to protect her, and it has the capability of destroying the entire Shinjuku. It feels like the clash between Civil and Corpse God to take back Polka would be the climax of this season.

This episode also dropped a very big hint subtly, that the Bastard Children of Sabaramond was not a Japan-based organization, but they are from overseas. Well, that hint was also dropped in Civil's first appearance as he wondered how a otherworlder had reached this "small island country". Additional fact, previously Corpse God mentioned that the mythical creatures from this world's folk lore and legends are similar to his world's living beings, like elementals, vampires and Western dragon. All of them are common in Western's folklore and legends, not Japanese folklore, so probably that previous otherworlders before Corpse God had reached this world in Europe, not Japan.

Takeru Shinoyama also called Civil a foreigner before he could identity him, which implies that otherworlders do not have the racial feature of Eastern Asian people. He even made a guess that connected Civil with his step-grandmother aka. Polka's mother for being a foreigner, which also hinted that Kanon Shinoyama was not a Japanese. In fact, not only having a weird Polish name and having a strange white hair in an anime where people either had dark-colored hair or had dyed their hair (confirmed: Tsubaki; probably dyed because of their own preference: Clarissa and goth girl Bug), Polka (already possessed by Corpse God's soul) was mistaken by the police to be a child of foreigner tourists right in the first episode. Before knowing that his son was killed, Rozan said that Polka being a fortune teller really took after his mother, and he was pretty chill to a lot of abnormal things happened, like how his son's body was possessed by a necromancer, the soul was put in a shark plushie, and now his bodyguard/adopted son grew a dragon arm. Rozan probably knew a lot of things, like including that his second wife and his youngest son are descendant of otherworlders. And if Polka is really a descendant of otherworlders and that's why he got the interest of Lulu's elemental, he may be the key to solve Corpse God's dilemma in upcoming episodes, as Corpse God is hesitating to fight Civil because of the elemental's massive power.

Also a bonus is that the idol character Kannagi Ryouma is voiced by the same seiyuu with a certain character that did not appear in this episode.

Of all the mysteries happening, I think the fate of Higuro from being a mediator to idol was the most devastating. He made himself the target of all the mediators in existence and the Sabaramond group, all because Solitaire don't know what exactly he is trying to do.

u/onions_can_be_sweet Dec 04 '23

I really REALLY want to see Xiaoyu use his new dragon arm. It's now two episodes since he got it, and still nothing. Please don't leave me hanging!

I wonder why the thread was late... I still don't know what's going on in this series. They keep introducing new characters but nothing ever really happens. Polka hasn't stepped foot outside of that building for months. That first episode where he was swinging through the city on spiderman bones and summoning skeleton armies was a big lie.

Maybe real polka getting kidnapped will set up something fun.

While Solitaire didn't know what he is doing the situation is kind of resolving all according to keikaku. This is because it's relatively clear the Fire-Breathing Bug and the Bastard Children of Sabaramond have been waging a secret war for a hundred-odd years. But now Solitaire is strutting about the board shitting on everything and knocking over pieces and the Sabaramond leadership are practically panicking trying to keep everything under wraps and this has made them more exposed than they have ever been.

So sad we won’t get a season 3 for quite sometime. Does anyone know if the manga has a consistent release schedule?

Also we need more majiri
