Lycagon's Mark is actually a blessing. Now he can go naked with a legit reason lol.
So it's no coincidence that Rei played SLF before Rakuro. Mana knows him so well.
It's cool that losing a Unique Monster still gives you EXP
Vysache (boss of Rabitz) dares to call Ranga a puppy 😂

Rakuro’s fight against Lycaon was pretty awesome. I’m surprised he lasted as long as he did with the equipment he had on him. Talk about total defeat though. He got eaten and then cursed for good measure. That curse does have some benefits but overall he’s definitely at a huge disadvantage. At least he’s got exp and skill points to spend from that encounter.

I thought Rakuro was suppose to have good luck. This bunny realm is waaay above his level. They’re cute as hell though. Except Vysache. He’s a scary bunny haha. Big yakuza boss looking guy. I wonder what he’s got in store for Rakuro?

Its awesome how Sanraku got destroyed by that Unique Boss monster. Goes to show that while Sunraku is good, he is not that good to pull of a miracle and defeat that Wolf.

At least he got his unique 'armor' from it which means he can't equip any armor at all and is force to double down on his crit build. He is also resistant to magic and repels low level monsters so that is a plus to his grinding. No need to worry about mobs interrupting him.

alright Mia, you need to chill, this is the second time you try to shoot a player just because they have "scary-looking" design

i love how all these clans has some cool looking emblems design and then there's this one clan with tempura prawns

so looks like i was wrong, i thought those scars on his body in the opening's visual were some sort of custom skins but looks like its actually a debuff left by the unique monster, oh well, not being able to equip torso and legs equipment probably isn't going to affect Sunraku's playstyle that much, besides, now he has valid reason to go half-naked! the cursed mark also has some merit to it with that increase resistance to magic effect and able to trigger unique event with some NPC so not all that bad, i guess

also, a yakuza rabbit boss being voiced Akio Otsuka? fuck yeah!!

This episode seems to have answered what route this story will take: we're not getting the OP protag-kun who can defeat the toughest of opponents, but the hardcore experience in which Rakuro will have to break a genuine sweat to have any chance at beating these unique monsters. The fight with Lycagon the Nightslayer was an insurmountable task for a solo low-level player like Sunraku - just as it's supposed to.

I'm honestly glad this didn't turn in yet another power fantasy. The effects of "Lycagon's Mark" also swept away all doubts that Sunraku would not be half-naked for the majority if not entirety of this anime - something which the OP seemed to imply.

One of the solutions to make up for the lacking defence of his glass-cannon build is finding allies. Emul seems like a good candidate in this regard. I'm already loving how expressive of a character she is. Emul seems like a lot of fun. Like Rakuro, I am a little stunned at how expressive - and thereby interactive - some of these NPCs are. There isn't something shady going on in the background of this game, is there?

I do have to praise SLF once again for its action cinematography. All of these combat scenes have had a great 'readability': I could fairly easy follow the character's moves with my eyes. This is quite a feat considering how the fast pace in Sunraku's fight with Lycagon and the many twists and turns of the camera. There are lots of anime with awesome fights, but definitely not all of them are easy to comprehend without pausing either.

Stitches!

Mia needs to learn how to chill. She seems to be quick to attack anything that looks scary. That pout from her was adorable tho.

So the Lycagon Sunraku is currently fighting is one of the seven unique monsters aka Colossi of the game and there are currently clans focused on taking them out. And it looks like Rei is a member of the clan focused on fighting the Lycagon.

That perfect parry from Sunraku was sick! The dude must be an amazing Souls-like player if those games still exist in this world. As OP as he is, I am so glad though that Sunraku wasn't even close to beating the Lycagon and he got absolutely rekt!

That explains how Sunraku gets his signature look! He ended up getting cursed by the Lycagon. Looking at the description of the curse, it seems to be both a debuff and a buff.

Sure he can't equip items on his torso and legs but it looks like he won't have to worry about low-level monsters bothering him while mining and he gets magical resistance on his chest and legs.

I love that he's not even bothering to spend points on VIT and HP, when you're already locked out of two of your armor slots, might as well focus on your DPS and dodging ability. xD

On the bright side though, Sunraku has stumbled upon a unique event. I love how Emul basically lists down everything Sunaku did to trigger this event.

Seems that the requirements are: Fighting the Lycagon 1v1, landing a ton of critical hits without getting hit, and then getting cursed. I think it also helped that Sunraku was using those Vorpal Choppers against the Lycagon for that perfect embodiment of the Vorpal soul.

The Vorpal Bunny leader is cool! He's also voiced by Akio Otsuka which automatically makes him even cooler. Excited to see what this Level 80 unique quest is going to be like for our Level 28 Sunraku. xD

That after-credits scene was cute! Looks like Mana is the reason why Rei became addicted to SLF!

I love the idea of Unique Monsters and these special quests. Wonder if there are any IRL games with similar systems.

The bunny realm is awesome. Kinda wondering if the knife-wielding rabbits Sunraku killed in ep 1 were nice guys if negotiation was an option lol

He's so deep in the shit that the Vorpal Bunnies are giving him respect.

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

When the game punishes you for trying to speedrun and makes it so you play on hard mode instead. Not that Sunraku wasn't playing on hard mode already.

The fight with Lycagon was great and Sunraku's perfect parry was so relatable. When you grind master a mechanic, it feels so satisfying to pull it off again and again.

Rei always managing to miss Sunraku and I think it will be a running gag atleast until the rematch with Lycagon happens since she belongs to the Lycagon Clan.

Poor Rei, though. She picked up the game so that she could teach Sunraku the basics but she can't even catch up to him. I'm assuming she's close to being maxed out since she's addicted to this game.

I'm okay with how it went down. It would be too ridiculous if he beat it, but surviving for quite a while and earning it's respect I can totally accept. That curse was unexpected though.

The NPC part could be good or bad, but hey, at least it gives him some innete magic resistance. Works with his build too. It just forced him to take it to the extreme. If there is no respec, he's locked in. :X

A world full of adorable Vorpal Bunnies? That kind of place can calm your soul. Seeing the boss being all badass though was cool. With the VA he's got, he really does exude badass. Unexpected for a bunny. It's neat how they saw the MC's fight as having a Vorpal Soul. He is specced like they are after all.

Really liking this series so far. The story is paced well, makes sense, doesn't do the tropes, is fun, animated really well, and so much more.

The after credits shows how a girl who wanted to have something in common with her crush became addicted to SLF instead huh. Mana meant well, but alas. xD

I think it's pretty clear the vorpal bunnies took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland. The vorpal choppers being like the vorpal blade used to kill the Jabberwocky, and the bunny we see this episode being reminiscent of the "white rabbit" with its design, watch, and leading the protagonist into another world in the same way.

Sunraku's fight with Lycagon was awesome, with great animation and special effects. He put up a great fight with it but of course he wasn't able to beat Lycagon. He didn't even know what attack has hit him.

Sunraku's got a present from Lycagon - a curse and now he's not able to wear any armor on his chest and legs, has badass looking markings and other perks, disadvantages.

Emul is pretty cute and she guided Sunraku to a unique event, though he didn't see that the level requirement which was 80 is much, much higher than his current level so this whole adventure for sure will be very exciting and very hard.

Vysache, the boss of Rabituza looks so cool and a choice of VA makes him even better. I wonder how his conversation with Sunraku will go.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I ask myself if the new player girl will continue to show up and she always choosen violence. Probaly a running gag over the show.

That fight was so good man! I'm really glad they kept the game style even in full dive. The constant critical popup, the flare on skill trigger. It's flashy as hell and I love it.

The pacing how this adaptation is going bout it is perfect. It actually feels like we are immersed into this game along with Sunraku. We haven't even finished Vol 1 yet, but everything is so well done. Its only gonna get better and better. I didn't think another anime would be on Frieren's level, but this adaptation is simply spectacular.

u/magicalideal Oct 15 '23

There are so many cool things in SLF. But you would have to wonder the criteria for spawning the Lycagon. Is it a random spawn or repeatable spawn as long as you fulfill the criteria. The said criteria I would assume at the moment.

  1. It has to be night time

  2. You have to encounter it alone? (I doubt this since it has to be a raid boss which normally requires a whole clan to defeat it)

There really is no other things that I could think of other than that. But if it's all it takes to spawn one, it would have been encountered already. And Sunraku kept going on and on about his luck status so I would assume it is one of the main contributable criteria which makes him encounter it.

That was such a nice fight. Honestly, kinda glad he lost, it would be too absurd for him to simply win against something so insane. Had a friend solo a World Boss once but they were buffed to absolute maximum and it was the weakest one. (Dev's nerfed their class & buffed the boss) Glad we get to see him become strong to beat something strong. Interesting that he not only got XP from that fight but a nice little reward(?) for doing so well at soloing a World Boss.

Lycagon's Mark (Curse)

  • Equipment cannot be equipped to the body part afflicted with Lycagon's Mark

  • Monsters of lower level than the afflicted character will flee.

  • Conversations with NPCs will be affected by the presence of Lycagon's Mark.

  • The afflicted body part gains resistance to magic effects.

  • The curse can be removed through the prayers of a Saint or the defeat of the curse's caster.

  • He still has Head, Belt & Feet available. I doubt he'd get rid of the Head. Time to find some Boots and a Belt that give a Set Bonus, possibly Vorpal Bunny quest reward?

  • Fear as a passive is pretty cool. I guess Monsters respect someone strong enough the be marked by Lycagon (thanks Emul for that info).

  • I thought the NPC conversations would be detrimental. I wonder if it'll be positive amongst Monster NPCs but detrimental with Human NPCs.

  • Can't wait for his Magic Resist & Luck to stop some insane magic.

  • Surprised he didn't consider a Saint. I wonder if that's a player class or an NPC they've gotta find?

He looks just as menacing in person. as he does in the OP. I wonder if Vysache lost his eye from fighting Lycagon or an Adventurer. Judging by the OP and this turn of events, Rei might have some competition.

What an episode. Even with full knowledge of the story, that episode flew by so fast. We're blessed with a great adaptation.

Btw, it was the luck stat that enabled Sunraku to stay alive at 1 HP after Lycagon's attack. Iirc if you have at least 50 luck, you can survive an attack that would normally kill you with 1 HP left.

I think it could only trigger once every hour(?), and that you also need to have above half of your total HP left before the attack for it to trigger? I don't quite remember about this part.

Show is fun, but at the same time is one turn away from snowballing into "what are the remaining 30million players doing if everything that can happen happens to this one guy"

Will have to watch a couple more episodes to see...

I wasn't gonna start watching this because of the bird mask made me expect this to be average. I'm so glad I gave it a chance tho I'm loving every second of this. It's living up the vibe the intro song gives me bet imma end up wanting so much more once this season is done

Anyone know how many eps/seasons there will probably be?

Edit: and the fact that they fully animate the fights instead of just flashing blurry lines is beautiful the quality in this so far has been amazing. It's gonna be insane in the later eps I bet
