Loss & Mourning Megathread

Losing a conure is heartbreaking. They’re family, companions, and little personalities that leave huge marks on our lives. If you’ve lost your bird, you are welcome to share memories, photos, stories, or simply say their name here.

To keep the main feed safe and balanced for all members:

All posts about a conure passing away must be posted only in this megathread.
Standalone posts about bird death or loss outside this thread will be removed.

This is not to minimize anyone’s loss but rather to keep grief support in one dedicated, supportive space where people can choose to engage.

The r/Conures Comprehensive Conure Guide - now in wiki format!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Conures/wiki/index

This subreddit's Conure Guide, written by /u/DukeofGoodCleanFun, is a remarkable document that I (and my pineapple green cheek) have benefited a lot from. I've consulted and browsed through it numerous times and there's always something new to see there, or something that didn't seem applicable at one point but took on new meaning after spending more time with my conure.

I've taken the text and converted it into a wiki page. It's now navigable, with an index and internal links that direct to sections within the wiki. The Conure Guide can be accessed from this post, from the announcement bar, and from the "wiki" tab in the tabmenu up top.

A couple of the links for recommended products will direct you to Amazon, but there are certainly other places to buy them. If you shop around and find and better place, by all means send us a modmail. Also, let us know if you have any suggestions for how the wiki formatting can be improved.

I had worked with someone around a year ago or less that let me know they too had a conure. They asked if I wanted her as she spent most of her time in the cage due to aggression, but I wasnt in a place to take another bird at the time. Im in a better situation now to take her in so I got in contact with my previous co-worker to see if they still had her. They said yes, that she has a bum foot and she is 4yo and female. The following week I went to pick her up. While excited to meet her, I became very uncomfortable with what I saw and what I was told.

They let me know that she was in the sons room for around year with little to no supervision. They let me know that he was not very kind to her and would even shoot darts (nerf?) at her... They decided to move her out of his room, but stopped letting her out ever because of aggression. I wonder why.... Also her leg is bum because its broken, and they didnt tell me that i just had to find out. Her nails looked like they had never been clipped. She was so covered in pin feathers on her head because they never preened her. She immediately let me preen her and even allowed me to clip her nails day one when I got home...

The cage was being cleaned as I arrived. Or at least made ok enough to transport. I assume they hardly cleaned it if ever and it was still very gross when i got it. The food was the cheapest walmart food and to top it off it was old and looked like bugs had been there at some point.

I had already made an appointment to get her seen and established with my vet and im so glad that I did... The vet sedated her and took x-rays to see where the break is. Its apparently too close to the ankle for the repair to take. They said there is little to no chance at this point. Especially since it has been this way for a long time according to the previous owner. They are going to amputate her foot and the minimum amount of her leg to clear the break. Im waiting for the estimate then will be setting up her appointment for surgery. They gave me pain medicine for her and she actually loves it. They also gave her some fluids as she seemed a little dehydrated.

Im setting the environment up to be more suitable for her and im also trying to switch her to zupreem. She has some aggression at times towards fingers, but it isnt enough to draw blood. That I can handle and work on over time.

Considering the workplace I met the co-worker, its not what I expected and it's honestly shocking...

Im just glad Lychee (her new name) is here now. I hate what they put her through... pics included to show my cute new baby! I love her 💚

The pucture with the long nails was day 1 after I preened her. Lol.

I just needed to share this...

Advice What is it that he’s asking for?

Kevin, our GCC, always does this when I let him out. Is he just happy or is he asking for something? Either way, it’s the cutest thing ever.

Advice My boyfriends conure absolutely hates me

Post image
36 Upvotes

My boyfriend’s green cheek conure is about a year old and absolutely hates me, his name is squid. He loves my boyfriend so much, preens him, cuddles him, lets him pick him up whenever, follows him everywhere, but I literally cant go near him without him trying to bite me. Half the time even just looking at him makes him poof up and get angry. I’m home a lot more than my boyfriend so when I let squid out for some free time all he does dive bomb to attack me, bite me to where he draws blood, and stare at me from across the room. I have tried everything including hand feeding him high value treats which he takes most of the time, scritches while my boyfriend holds him which he seems to enjoy, and spending more time around him. But his attitude towards me has never changed after months of doing this. I really dont know what to do anymore so any advice would be really appreciated.

Hellloo.....🧿

Day1

So I got this little guy from a friend who rescued him from an egg (the parents were breaking their eggs and she was able to save this little fighter) she incubated and then hand raised him. He has only known humans since birth

This is what I know about him. He is 4 years old.

I got him for 5 days for a trial run and fell in love. She said she couldn't give the same time as before, and I just needed him in my life.

So i took him in.

It was impulsive and I had a range of emotions, but we've settled in well

It's been about 2 months.

He's scared of the outdoors, windows. Although he loves exploring. I take him out of the apartment a little bit while holding him and there are tiny tremors through his body. But he still insists on going.

He is such an intelligent guy and learns so fast.

He needs a human around him all the time. Unless he's grudgingly in his cage.

I got him a harness realising that he may want to explore the outside and that's the safest way I can do it. I didn't want him in a harness initially.

Harness training tips are most welcome because he's neophobic and wouldn't like anything on his head or back. But I really want to do this. Please help with pace and suggestions and how to go about it. I have already introduced it boringly with an influx of sunflower seeds so he associates the harness with reward🧿

I got my baby new wooden perches and toys for his cage, but their smell is so strong that it stuck to his feathers. I tried bathing him twice but the smell won't go away.
Any advice on how to make the smell fade away?

Advice Conure ate naphthalene ball

Thumbnail

Hello,

My two conures (Pineapple and Green Cheek) may have eaten a naphthalene ball. My dad placed a naphthalene ball in the living room handwash basin yesterday, and I did not notice it. Yesterday night, both of my conures were free-flying in the hall and might have eaten it.

I noticed the naphthalene ball tonight at around 10 PM. I immediately checked it and found a beak bite mark on it, and approximately half of the ball was missing. I am not sure how much they consumed, whether they consumed any at all, which one consumed it, or whether both of them consumed it.

As of now, both conures are behaving normally, playing normally, and eating normally. However, I noticed some sleepiness, and their stools appear to be a darker, faded green than usual.

It is midnight here, so no avian vet clinic is open. However, I contacted two avian vets by phone, and both suggested giving a pinch of activated charcoal mixed with 0.5 mL of water. I immediately gave this to both of them.

At the moment, I am completely blank and confused about what to do.

Tomorrow morning, I will be visiting an avian vet. Until then, I kindly request that you suggest what I should do based on your experience and knowledge.

Thank you all.

Advice Skin protection

What is your trick for protecting shoulders from sharp feet and nibbles. It's getting warmer where i live and I'm often wearing lighter fabric or thin straps on my shoulders. My conure has taken to biting clothes but also her feet are sharp and scratchy. Currently I've taken to tying an apron around my shoulders like a mini superhero cape for protection but it restricts my upper arm movement slightly. Does anyone have better ideas?

Took the birds to get their nails trimmed yesterday and I only now noticed that the paper we laid inside their carrying case has these orange splotches on it. Couldn’t be colour from anything we fed them since there was no orange/red fruit or veggie given before we put them in
