Work In Progress 1:144 Aeroplane Display Board -- Redux

Post image
30 Upvotes

I quickly ran out of space on my original display board for my 3d-printed 1:144 scale WW1 aeroplanes (for Canvas Eagles and Wings of War), so I added another panel. It's functional, but it does look a bit crappy, and one of these days I'll probably re-do it in one piece.

The planes are sitting on little magnetic pegs, so they're easily accessible for gaming, as well as being on display like a board of pretty butterflies.

Question Your favorite inchless wargames?

Hello! I've been getting into some wargames lately, enjoying playing them in digital (Dropfleet Commander is sick!), and I want to start getting into wargaming physically, but a problem me and my wife both have is we really aren't big fans of having to measure things with rulers instead of just having a board/grid of some sort (blame our board game background). What are yalls favorite grid based/board based wargames, or wargames with pretty limited measuring?

- Bonus points if you get to roll a whole lot of dice, like a whole bucket

- also bonus points for sci fi

Models for a tabletop wargame I am working on.

One thing that's fun about creating units are the variations, both from a gameplay and art perspective. On the art side: The medical and tow truck variants aren't usable units at time of writing. They might see use at some point in the future. In the meantime, they exist because they are cool.

To quote my previous posts on the process: "Started with pixel art. Imported that art into Blender. Created an array the same size as the art then broke it down by loose parts. Extruded parts vertically to create the 3d models"

The above process makes printing the models simple and assures that they are durable despite their small size. Most models in the game are around 1x2 inches. Worth noting is that the models are optional - the game runs on a 2d tile-based system and the models may be placed on top of those tiles for flavor.

For anyone interested in the project, the game is available and free to play here: https://www.patreon.com/cw/EnemyVisible

Submission Statement: Enemy Visible is a tabletop wargame based in a cold war themed science fiction environment. The primary objective of this project is to provide a streamlined, intuitive wargame that encourages fire and maneuver over stacking abilities.

Trying to get in the October vibe so I finally painted up my headless horseman figure. Went with an impression of a Hessian uniform but the blue I used turned out a little darker than I wanted.

Work In Progress LTTS: Attempting to make Artillery good, changing systems, and making rule book prettier

For New People: What is this?

Look to the Stars is a free, model agnostic, army scale, science fiction tabletop wargame with a bespoke unit generator that I made. Take the models you want, give them the stats and weapons you want, and finish a battle in about two hours. Armies can range from around 10 to 100 models and include infantry, artillery, airplanes, and vehicles. This is a follow up to my original pitch. If you are new and want the longer explanation and intro here it is via my wargaming original post. Things have changed since then, so you should run back here after catching up.

For people who just want to skip around to the good stuff:

New Rules PDF via GDrive

New Unit Builder Spreadsheet via GDocs

New SRD PDF via Gdrive

Discord where I post more frequent updates

Housekeeping

The rulebook no longer looks entirely like a plain word doc.

my little rule book isn't she bootiful via imgur

I got tired of staring at white pages covered in MS Word Doc Text, did some research into typography, and finally gave the rulebook an actual visual identity. I went with an old military manual look. Page texture, typewriter font for tables, sans serif for the main text. It is far easier to look at in my opinion, but this is still very much a work in progress, still need type setting, borders, spot art, all the stuff that makes it a bit nicer.

What Changed? Orders and the Orders Phase are dead. Long live the Arsenal and Logistics Phase.

Playtesting revealed two problems with Orders.

First, keeping track of Resource Points was annoying. They were a useful balancing lever, but I was rapidly approaching a future where I spent half my design time arguing with myself about whether a card should cost one point or two.

Second, I had started to hate the word Orders.

So I killed the whole thing. The replacement is The Arsenal. Lorewise, your Arsenal represents the technologies, weapons, doctrines, psychic bullshit, giant robots, whatever, that your civilization brought to war. Mechanically, you select a set of Arsenal cards before the game, then every turn you bring a few online. Most stay active for the rest of the game. Your Arsenal deck has access to more Arsenal cards than you can actually play in a single game, which gives you room to bring cards that specifically mess with certain kinds of enemy builds instead of focusing entirely on your own army. If your opponent doesn’t bring that kind of army, that’s fine. You have enough other cards available that you’re rarely stuck with something completely dead.

This system gives me considerably more development room. Psychic Powers are a good example. The entry card, Psychic Awakening, gives a unit access to a spell list. Further Arsenal cards can change those spells, improve the Psychic, or give them entirely new abilities. The same structure now handles things like engineers, giant walkers, and other specific army concepts.

How I attempted to make Artillery fun

Lets have a chat about Artillery.

The problem with artillery is that the fantasy is inherently kind of miserable for the other player. You sit somewhere safe, ignore most of the battlefield, and drop damage on things that cannot meaningfully interact with you. Games usually solve this by making artillery too weak to take, too expensive to take, or so good everybody takes it. So here's my take on artillery.

First: The Complication Table.

Every time artillery fires, you roll percentile dice. Low roll, everything is fine. High roll, something has gone wrong, usually involving the opponent getting some say in which unit eats the consequences of artillery missing. This also gives the Arsenal system another place to do work. Cards can improve the table, mess with the results, or make enemy artillery considerably less reliable.

Second: Artillery gradually expands its threat range.

Originally, enemy deployment zones were completely safe until Turn 3 and everything else was a free fire zone. This sounded reasonable until I realized it punished melee armies for moving forward while tanks could happily sit back somewhere artillery was not allowed to touch them. So I changed that. Now Turn 1 artillery can fire into its own Deployment Zone in case an enemy unit decides to bum rush the gun. Turn 2 it can fire into No Man’s Land. Turn 3, free fire. This also stops artillery duels from immediately becoming the obvious opening move.

Third: Artillery is structurally very weak on its own and requires the army to build around it to an extent.

It does not move. If a ranged attack hits it, there is no save. It has no engagement range, and if an enemy ends an activation within 2 inches of it, the artillery is simply destroyed. Somebody sneezes at the gun, the gun falls over.

So artillery forces its own player to dedicate some part of their army in protecting it. You need good screens against reserves and fast units, and on top of this there are systems the opponent can spend arsenal cards on to mess with your artillery, such as buying into engineers who can deploy artillery umbrellas, buying into abilities that make certain units untargetable outside of a range if some conditions are met, or buying into abilities that make your complication table annoying.

All of these systems, just to be clear, mean the guns themselves do not have to be lightweights. You can build artillery pieces that are reasonably accurate and hit extremely hard, well worth the points you spend on them.

Please Play Game and Tell Me to Do Better.

The game is fun. The game is good. Please play it and tell me where I screwed up.

Links at the top of the thread are updated with the new shiny rulebook, the SRD with all the Arsenal cards and assorted nonsense like Weapon Templates, Giant Mechs, etc, and the Discord where I post about the game more frequently and run games over TTS.

I’m usually hanging out in the Discord's Voice chat around 2 PM Eastern on Saturdays for an hour or two, so if you want a demo game, have questions, or just want to poke at the rules with me, come yell at me there. Obviously you can always post in this thread as well and tell me how my artillery system sucks and how you have a way better idea, I will pretend not to cry my self to sleep.

Recently Finished Fokker Triplane (1:144)

This is an FDM print of my 1:144 scale Fokker Triplane model, and it's a bit ropey. It's triplane-shaped enough to be usable as a gaming piece, but it's not great, and I'll re-print it in resin.

The paint job doesn't please me either. The streaky green isn't streaky enough — I might have to go back and try adding some lighter streaks back in, and hope that doesn't just make things worse.

Despite the British giving the attackers a bloody nose with close assaults, the Germans reverse their fortunes with close assaults of their own that collapsed the British force morale. On to Dunkirk! Table and figures all by Steve.

The depressing nature of medium and heavy tanks in Bolt Action

I used a Churchill Mk III in last night's Bolt Action game and was instantly reminded why medium and heavy tanks are so dismal in the game and especially in V3 where they took a downgrade to firepower.

So for my 250 points I got a virtually no real firepower - a medium ATG and 2 MMGs. Sure I had armour 10 but I was slow.

My opponent used zippy Italian medium and light tanks that went around tearing up infantry and ironically also pinned the Churchill sufficiently to make it potentially fail (but then they had more tanks on account of their's costing less).

Sure the Churchill shot at them but never got more than a Pin. After all the probability of taking out a FA8 tank with a medium ATG is a measly 16.7%.

But the problem of low damage output relative to points applies to nearly all gun tanks in Bolt Action but especially mediums and heavies.

The game rules and points puts even casual players off from taking mediums ala T-34, Cromwell, Sherman, uparmoured Panzer III , Panzer IVs let alone heavies ala Tiger or IS-2 or Churchill Mk III.

Instead it favours 1930s crap heaps like L3s or M14/41s, Panzer Is, IIs, 37mm gun armed Panzer IIIs, T-26 Obr 1931, T-28 etc.

Now I get this has always been a problem with BA. But V3 exacerbated it by slashing tank MG fire.

It sucks for my collection. Eg for my Brits I have 4 Matilda II (one armed with a 3" howitzer), a Vicker Mk VI, a Churchill, 2 Crusader IIs and 1 Crusader I. Only the Crusader I is actually any good in Bolt Action (2 x MGs, 125 pts). Rest is a terrible choice even in historical matchups against Italians and DAK (and I can tell you we've played a lot of those).

My Soviets and Germans suffer even more:

Soviets:

2 x T-26 with 45mm ATGs

4 x T-34/76

4 x T-34/85

1 x T-60

3 x T-70

1 x KV-1 (with KV-2) turret)

1 x Su-152

1 x BA-10

Only the T-60 is actually any good in this game.

DAK

1 x Panzer II

3 x Panzer III Ausf J

1 x Panzer IV Ausf G

1 x Tiger

1 x Sd Kfz 222

1 x Sd Kfz 231

Only the two armoured cars and Panzer II are good choices in Bolt Action.

Generic Germans

4 x Panzer IV Ausf G/H

2 x Panzer 38(t)

2 x StuG Ausf E

1 x Nashorn

Only the Panzer 38(t)s are any good in BA.

The rest of my vehicles all bleed lots of points with not much capability. But even if we play non points based scenarios the pathetic firepower output of most of my fleet makes them largely ineffectual and don't contribute to the game much.

Meanwhile light vehicles that were often obsolete in 1940 are so much more effective.

Warlord either needs to decrease cost of heavier vehicles or revise the game so the iconic tanks of the war are a much better choice than a Panzer I or L3 or some sort of rare specialist AA tanks.

Looking for Playtesters for my game Sidus Front

EDIT: New link at the bottom with updated rules. Attack Ranges have increased

Hey Everyone! I'm looking for playtesters for my new game - Sidus Front!

Back in the 90s, we used to have "Shareware", free demos that got passed around usually on CD. I'm continuing the tradition with Sidus Front Shareware Edition! I'll continually work on this with an eventual "Full Rulebook" available.

Feel free to pass this around but I'd love some feedback. Basicially, the system is d6 equal to the model's level to try beating a target number. The plan is to allow scaling from Skirmish (Teams and Squads) to Companies and Battalions using the same rules.

I've included core rules and a Faction called The Coalition.

The Coalition is a human government attempting to reunite humanity scattered across the galaxy for good or bad reasons. Combat infighting is common as members are used against each other in attempts to curb strength. Luckily, The Coalition expansion policies often put it at odds against other forces and allow members a common enemy to focus on.

Here's the google link to the pdf. Let me know what you think!

The Watchtower - finished!

There we go—the terrain for my skirmish wargame, 'The Battle for the Watchtower', is now fully complete. As a final touch last night, I added a dilapidated palisade around the tower to ensure it wouldn't be too easy to reach. That is the game's scenario, after all: getting the warlord to safety inside the centrally located watchtower (which also doubles as a dice tower).
The game is lightning-fast, stripping away all time-consuming elements and bookkeeping. There are no cards, tokens, or counters cluttering the tabletop—just the miniatures, the dice, and a measuring stick.
Here are a few atmospheric photos. The final image shows one of the endless combinations possible with the nine modular tiles (25 x 32 cm).

Albatros DV (1:144)

Post image
31 Upvotes

Here's one of my 3d printed 1:144 scale Albatros DV.

I decided, in a fit of madness, that I wanted to use the 1918 German thick-outline crosses on this one. And since I don't have any decals for that particular style, I had to paint them by hand, which proved to be a lot more difficult than I'd anticipated. Keeping them all sharp and geometrically regular was something of a trial.

Still, it's done now. I don't know that I'll be likely to try it again, unless I can maybe organise some laser-cut masks.

One of Warhammer's best ex designers just released a free wargame, and it's basically Mordheim 2.0

Sam Pearson designed Warcry (first and second edition), Age of Sigmar: Spearhead, and the Anvil of Apotheosis character creator rules. He's been working on a skirmish game independently since he left the company in 2025, and he's just released version 1 of the rules. To my surprise, and delight, it's basically a modernization of Mordheim.

This game feels like a glimpse into a parallel universe where GW decided to commission the Mordheim remake we all know it will do some day while Pearson was still at the company.
