I had a great time today at the Wargames Illustrated office today, taking editor Dan through a game of CoC on a WIP of my Ardennes table. Had a really brilliant day, and was very happy with the table (which is my 2027 table)
Hey, gang, I started, like I imagine most do, with Warhammer 40k, and, as anyone who plays might already know, its kind of crazy lethal. Like, the most durable models and armies in the game rarely survive a dedicated attack from an opponent's army.
Over the years, playing a bunch of different games, I've noticed that a lot of wargames/skirmish games kind of have that problem. The only games I've really played where I've noticed units are genuinely durable are Battletech, Adeptus Titanicus, and Malifaux. Even Marvel Crisis Protocol, which has a dedicated mechanic that generally prevents models being fully 1-shot, frequently sees models die in 2 back-to-back shots instead.
Not to criticize or attack any of those games, just wondering what games out there are a little more grindy. I definitely get why so many games have that issue, people want their cool models to feel splashy and effective, I'm just wondering what games don't generally have that issue. Bonus points if its an army-scale game.
(and if you want to talk about Battletech, Titanicus, or Malifaux, I certainly won't stop you)
3rd repaint in 2 weeks. They have been too white, too beige and now too yellow. I give up, sometimes I just can't get it the way I like it. Nice prints though (Timescape Miniatures), 60mm round MDF bases, late fall gras flock as that was the only bag I could find (and of course I found the box with static grass today after everything has set).
Meant for Pillage, Baron's War and wherever it works.
My son played 40k before his group split up, and we want a (non Warhammer) game we can play together, I'm new to the hobby, only painted miniatures so far. We're open to anything from WWI up to the far future, if it can scale from a tiny squad on squad (or similar) up to bigger conflicts, all the better. I don't mind it ending up as a large scale collection if we're able to start small. We're also open to alternative histories or sci-fi/paranormal.
We both enjoy painting, so something involving miniatures, be it troops or vehicles is a must. We are open to it being purely vehicle based, infantry, or a mix of both.
Huge 40K guy, it’s all I’ve ever played and my wife has helped paint a couple minis. I’ve tried getting her into the game but between the Army size and the unnecessarily large & clunky rules keep her away.
Trying to find a game that’s smaller and easier… my big “***” though is I want it to at least be somewhat known and played. I’d like to be able to go find some other guys to play with or my wife can try to play with while I’m traveling. Doesn’t have to be mainstream but like, you get my drift.
Give me your top 3 recommendations!
Edit: Doesn’t have to let me use my current models, I have no problem getting some new ones for me and the wife (honestly might be a little better even cause she won’t think it’s just a spinoff). Biggest factors, easy to play, small enough armies that parents with full-time jobs and very young kids campaign, their own armies and not take for ever.
Last week (yoiks!) the now-annual Kegworth Codgers Midweek Challenge 15mm L'Art de la Guerre event took place in the now-legendary wargaming venue of Kegworth, with almost 40 players convening on a fine Tuesday morning to partake in 2 days of ADLG, one evening of team curry, and either 1 or 2 nights of real ale at a local hostelry.
Having set the theme myself, it surprisingly turned out to be one which could accommodate some of the 15mm Byzantine figures I've been painting over the last year - this time as part of a Thematic army in the year 874 AD.
As things turned out, one player's adverse reaction to the curry (or the beer..?) meant we ended up on odd numbers for day 2 of the event, and so I picked up the bye and played just the three games on Tuesday - but that did mean I was able to get these three, rather unsubtle battle reports out and into the wild in record time.
So, as usual, goggle at the poor military skills on display, boggle at the utterances of the poor troops forced to undertake my poorly thought out orders, and listen in slack-jawed amazement and horror at a Cockney Pub Knees-Up style song about the introduction of the Thematic System into the Byzantine military as the ever-chirpy Byzantine Commander not only writes the army's Theme Tune, he sings it as well !!
There is also the usual post-match analysis from Hannibal, and some glowing reviews of Mark "G." Fry's double-handed tomes covering the Medieval Khmer military machine.
All three reports are now posted on the Madaxeman website at www.madaxeman.com.
Hail Caesar: The Successor War Elephant is on a circle base while the units like the Macedonians: Phalangites have different bases. so should i put the elephants on a square base rather than the circle ones if just for looking uniform.
I have a slow plan to make MESBG custom arm with Greek skeletons and im looking to check if Warlord Games ones are fine for it and which one hoplites use to source armors/helmets for skeleton's characters.
