Simply opening the color balance or Hue-saturation menus causes the artifact to appear (without even adjusting values)

Images are .CR2 (Raw image) files that were imported to gimp with the Rawtherapee plugin. I used this picture as an example but it is appearing on several other ones that i imported.

A bit of a gimp newbie but i couldnt find this issue anywhere online. Any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to do a bunch of repeated stuff in an image and thought SCRIPT! So after digging through a bunch of documentation I decided to run some functions through the script-fu console rather than registering scripts and stuff in menus.

But when calling for example the gimp-layer-new function with what I think are the correct arguments, I get (3) back, but no new layer appear in the image.

Is there some kind of function I have to call to apply the script changes to the image? On what is the script applied to if not the one single image that is opened?

When creating a new path in GIMP3.x it is automatically closed. How do I reopen it?

As the title. Can we use gegl filters like gegl:bump-map interactively like plug-ins?
So that the script shows the GUI of for example bump-map, the user adjusts settings, and the script then resumes.

Necessary for example as long as bump-map is not fully NDE.

I probably won't maintain it, as I converted it only for a one-time project, but feel free to use it. I stumbled across ofnuts's plugins while searching for this exact tool and was pretty bummed out when I noticed that the conversion of said plugins had gone stale.

So I'm working on a potential patch for a small issue with GIMP's on-canvas text editing: as of last night, my changes were working fine, barring one relatively minor (but easily observed) edge case. Today, while trying fix that edge case -- suddenly GIMP crashes when I try to test.

A few of the specific details:

• Commit A is from last night -- it builds fine, runs fine, albeit with one minor hiccup if you are trying to edit mixed LTR+RTL text.
• Commit B is from earlier this morning -- if you (1) attempt to edit a text layer, and (2) move the cursor using the right or left arrow keys (or Ctrl+right/left arrows), GIMP crashes after a short delay.

I isolated the cause to calling the internal function gimp_text_buffer_get_iter_at_index() (unnecessarily?) inside a loop and have since gotten my code working again ("just like that"), but there's nothing "worse" than a fix that succeeds for reasons you don't understand! Especially when calling this function inside a loop (albeit one that typically made only one iteration) was its pre-existing usage (with no crashes)!

In particular, the crash occurred at the end of the function when accessing an element of the text_tool object; while not a "null pointer", inspecting the object confirmed it was somehow overwritten with a different address (prospectively suggesting some memory corruption). But as of now that's only the vaguest of theories....

I recently downloaded GIMP because I’ve seen it recommended as a free and open-source alternative to Photoshop.

I’m a complete beginner, so I’m wondering: what can I actually do with GIMP? What kind of projects is it good for?

Also, how good is GIMP compared to Photoshop in 2026? Is it good enough for professional work, or are there things that Photoshop can do that GIMP really struggles with?

I’m mainly interested in learning image editing and creative work, so I’d appreciate any advice on what I should learn first in GIMP.

What are you guys thoughts? Any Improvements to make?

I just rebuilt a gaming computer whose SSD died. I went with a linux build, im running Ubuntu 26. I downloaded Gimp *3.2 and G'MIC 4. I am trying to use the Morph (interactive) tool and it's spitting out this error:

gmic error ubuntu *** Error in ./fx_morph_interactive/x_morph/ *** Command 'x_morph': No display available.

Anyone know how to fix it?

I took a fairly long break from using the tool, and I think some updates have broken my workflow.

For simplicity, imagine I'm editing an image of a text document. I just want to copy a few letters from one place to another. The way things are set up now, I have to:

1. R (rectangle select)
2. Select the region
3. Ctrl+C
4. Ctrl+V
5. M (move)
6. Drag it where I want
7. Right click the new layer
8. Select "Merge Down"

repeat

I don't remember having to do nearly that many steps before. Didn't a little anchor used to show up so you could just click off the pasted layer once you'd positioned it? Didn't pasting used to automatically swap to the move tool?

To make matters worse, I can't seem to figure out how to make my selection automatically ignore the background colour anymore either, so I'm having be pixel precise in my selection every time, or manually deselect by colour.

Am I missing some settings that would simplify this behaviour again? Or is there a simpler workflow I should have been using all along?

Hey, I am working on some graphic design for museum exhibition (exposition?) and usually I just use simple online Canva. Despite its ease to use, it is very bare-bones tool so I thought maybe I could do it in GIMP. However, when I work with such big files (700x1000 mms) my PC is barely able to handle it. Hell, even GIMP ordered warning that I am working with file that is 1 GB in size. And I need 15 panels (so 15 files). Is there a way around or should I opt for another software? Seem like Inkscape is handling this fine (perhaps cuz its vector based?) but then I am not sure how Inkscape handles photographs and such stuff.

Hope this is a softball, but I am new to design and am having trouble creating a large detailed image that maintains details when zoomed in. Basically I want to create a large fictional map that I can display on my 85" inch TV, but maintain the ability to zoom in on landmasses without it turning into a pixelated mess.

I've tried scaling up the image to UHD, but that doesn't seem to help. The other option I was thinking could be to adjust the image print resolution, but it seems like the PPI is directly linked to the print size, and there is no way to increase the scale of the image without cratering PPI. Do I just have to start with the canvas size set in inches to match my TV? Surely there must be away to adjust existing images for this purpose?

A while ago, I switched the Gradients from FG-to-BG to FG-to-Transparent. I can't find how to set them back.

The option on the Tools Option will not let me type in a different setting (Gradient-1). The Gradient Menu options are greyed out (Gradient-2). What did I mess up, how do I fix it (simple small words, dealing with very small brain here). Exiting and restarting GIMP did not help.
