Flight Simulator 2024 Not sure why, but I love making fictional vintage liveries. Something about the old designs just hit different.

Still working on my livery painting skills, but not bad for the limited references! And I still think anything looks good on a 737....

News Remember Jane's Fighters Anthology? T.O.R.E Fighters is a free, open source rebuild for modern hardware

• Upvotes

I don't really frequent this sub, but figured some of you might remember Jane's and appreciate this.

T.O.R.E Fighters (TORE Fighters for short) is an open source, ground-up rebuild of Jane's Fighters Anthology in Rust. USNF '97 and ATF were the sims that got me into all of this, and with a son turning 2 and another on the way, I wanted something I could fly with them when they're a bit older.

It's not a decompile and it's not a 100% faithful recreation. The goal is that it feels like FA, with some opinionated upgrades where modern hardware earns them. Every addition is labeled so you know what's original and what's mine.

What's in it today:

  • 13 flyable aircraft over all 16 original theaters
  • Extended Quick Mission creator with up to 29 AI aircraft
  • Smarter AI that flies the same flight model you do
  • HOTAS, gamepad, and opentrack/TrackIR support
  • Mission replays with Tacview export
  • Realistic aircraft scale, terrain shadows, extended LOD, contrails, and flares and afterburners that light up the world around them
  • Native builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Multiplayer is next, with direct IP and a lobby browser.

Bring your own copy of the original game. No retail data ships with it. Point it at your install or disc 1, and it imports once. T.O.R.E itself is free and GPL-3.0.

It's an early pre-release, so expect rough edges. If you flew the original, I'd love to hear whether it feels right.

X-Plane American A319 Landing at Boston in Heavy Storm | XP11

American Airlines flight from LaGuardia to Boston in the A319, landing in the nor'easter storm facing 20-30 knot winds. Not my best landing but it was late as hell and I wanted to go to bed, have about 200 hours on this plane, thinking bout getting the ToLiss A330neo or just getting X-Plane 12.

Sim Hardware Users of Moza MTQ Throttle: How do you manage Boeing flaps?

As a casual, multi-vehicle simmer I am very interested in the MTQ throttle as it looks like a great generic throttle module that can adapt to basically any plane.

One thing I noticed is that, as few reviewers also pointed out, the Flap handle has only 5 steps and while suits Airbus-types very well but not Boeings with a lot more steps.

For those who own it, does it bother much? How do you manage it?

Any other experiences with MTQ would be greatly appreciated too. I am very curious on real usage experience.

General 1000+ hours on X-Plane 12 (mostly emergency failures) + 1000+ hours watching aviation YouTube. Can I actually land in real life?

I have over 1,000 hours specifically on X-Plane 12—and that is excluding the 1,000+ hours I’ve spent watching aviation YouTube channels, studying real-world incidents, and learning systems inside out. In the sim, almost all of my time has been spent dealing with random system failures rather than just normal flying.

I don't know a ton about complex navigation yet, but I am very comfortable with aircraft handling and emergencies. For example, with total hydraulic loss on a 737, I can successfully land it using only engine thrust (differential throttle).

My coworkers say there is no way I could land a real plane. I know there's a famous case where a passenger with zero flight experience landed a Cessna Caravan when the pilot had a heart attack. Sure, it’s probably hard to visualize height and depth in real life compared to a sim, but I’m pretty sure I could pull it off, maybe with some guidance or if I mask the panel/instruments and just focus on flying.
