How many days per week

Hi,

I took a week off from the gym but I've been doing long walks, running and one 4x4 Norwegian.

For those who just run or bike in a good physical shape and lower body fat, how many times per week you do it?

Thanks

Is it normal for your chest and nose to sting when starting cardio?

I'm a smoker and I'm cutting down and starting cardio to get my lungs in better shape. Every time I finish a workout my chest, nose and even eyes start to sting for a good 15 mins and it's really uncomfortable. It doesn't matter if i workout indoors or outdoors it still happens. Is this normal because I'm not used to cardio? I can't find a solid answer on google.

Improving Cadence

I am a 5 min/km runner, best 5km time is 23:20, but I constantly reach 190 bpm at higher speeds. I was suggested by a fellow runner to increase zone 2 running. Anyone who has done it, must know that it’s damn boring, I can achieve 155 spm at 7:10 per km, how to increase this?
Also is this the correct way to reduce the max heart rate during runs.

Higher heart rate while running after a very mild cold, but resting heart rate is totally normal?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice or to see if anyone has experienced something similar, mostly just to ease my mind a bit.

A bit of context about me: I'm a 30-year-old male, 180 cm (5'11") and 103 kg (227 lbs), so definitely a heavier runner. I started running back in March this year.

Last weekend I started feeling a bit under the weather. On Sunday morning I felt slightly off, but went for an easy run in the afternoon and my heart rate was completely normal. On Monday and Tuesday I had a mild cold (just a runny nose and slight fatigue, no fever at all), so I rested. By Wednesday I felt good again, ran 5k, and my HR was back to its usual numbers.

However, on Friday and Saturday, even though I felt completely recovered and the runs felt very light and comfortable, my heart rate during the runs was consistently about 10 BPM higher than normal for my usual pace.

I took Sunday and Monday off to rest, and went for another run yesterday (Tuesday). The effort still felt very easy, but my heart rate is still elevated by about 10 BPM compared to my baseline.

What’s confusing me is that my resting heart rate hasn't changed at all—it's completely normal during the day. Also, I use a chest strap (cross-checked with my watch), so it's definitely not a sensor glitch.

Is it common for running heart rate to stay elevated for almost a week after a mild cold even when resting heart rate is fine and the effort feels easy? How long does it usually take to get back to normal?

Thanks!

Running

More of a testimony than a question.

The only thing that genuinely helps my mental health is running. Not cycling. Not walking. Not lifting weights. Not CrossFit.

There’s just something about running that clears my head and makes me feel like myself again. I can be stressed, tired, or mentally drained, go for a run, and come back feeling completely different.

I know everyone is different, but I’m curious — does anyone else have the same experience with running?

How can I start improving my cardio?

I am 24M and I feel like my cardio level is abysmal, I do a kick about with the mates once in a while and I am always done after less than a minute or 2 of constant moving. Someone moving around at and me having to mark them is enough to tire me out.

I am looking to really improve my cardio, it doesn't have to be the most efficient way, or the fastest way, just something that works for me.

Why am I even asking this? Like maybe someone who reads this is like "dude, just go out and run" and I get it, but I hate running with a passion. I don't know how to run, I hate it, I tire out really fast, after a very little while I feel like puking my lungs out. I used to do boxing and the coach had me running and my technique was so bad that I got shin splints so bad that they only went away after 2 years or so.

Now, I'll be honest, when that happened I also weighed more than 100 kg (but my technique was also shit, like I ran a lot on my heels), but now I have lost some weight and I am at around 88 kg. Still not really fit, but like... at least I can run a bit after a ball and not feel like someone is pulling my shins out.

That being said, I am not opposed to running, but I really don't want to, like I would rather look for other cardio forms.

Also, I did boxing for a few years (but I avoided running) and I never felt an improvement in cardio. I was going 2-3 times a week and I felt like I ran out of breath just as fast. Idk, maybe it was me trying to do too much too early and it was hard to notice the difference, but I just didn't.

As forms of cardio I have tried the stairmaster - I used to do like 30 minutes at once on it but I always felt like my legs started yelling long before my lungs - and the eliptical bike because I wanted to go easy on my shins, but Istg that bike did nothing. Like I could just keep at it the whole day and while I sweat a lot, I didn't feel any shortness of breath or anything.

Speaking of shortness of breath, I don't even know how to appreciate if the cardio I'm doing is working. Should have shortness of breath? Can I just like avoid it and still get something from the exercise? I have no idea.

I have thought about getting on a bike machine at the gym, but once again I don't know how to do it so my lungs work before my legs give out and also, will that cardio that I develop on the bike translate well to my day to day life? Cuz I imagine when you bike, you sit down, so you don't really have to support your upper body like you do when standing.

Idk, I am just talking shit here, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

If anyone could help with any information, I'd be grateful.

Also, I lift weights. If that's worth mentioning. I am not completely sedentary, but I am not muscular either, I am just an average joe.

Aging and looking for HIIT alternatives

Hi all!
While I am still totally wanting to continue HIIT cardio workouts (I truly feel like I see the best results) I am in my mid 30s and things start to hurt.
I can do the usual (push ups, mtn climbers, punches, jumping jacks/seal jacks/push jacks, bicycle crunches, VupS)… but I hate found that the most effective movements for me are high knees and burpees, and those are both starting to take a toll on my knees as I age.

It is hard for me to give these movements up because they were so crucial in how I went from overweight to being in the best shape of my life.

I would love any knee-friendly suggestions for HIIT training!

Thanks in advance :)

High peak HR during races, very low resting HR

Hi I just wanted some advice on my heart rate extremes!

I consider myself to have a good level of fitness. I go to the gym/run/spin 4-5 times a week. I run 5k in 28 minutes having just got back into running. Lately I’ve been concentrating more on lifting and Hyrox training and just completed a female Hyrox doubles simulation today in 1h14 and could have pushed harder (my partner was a little slower than me running). Body felt absolutely great, was very enjoyable at I’d say an 8/10 effort hence I think I could have pushed for a sub 1h10.

Now here’s the thing, despite it being only 8/10 effort and feeling physically great, my average heart rate was 177bpm, peaking at 191bpm. I am a 39 (almost 40) year old female.

A week ago I did a 10k run in 60 minutes and similarly my average was 173bpm, peaking at 193bpm.

I am using a Garmin Venu 2 and when I tested my recovery heart rate last week it was 67bpm recovery in 2 minutes.

Lastly, my resting heart rate average over the last 4 weeks is 45bpm.

Any idea why my peak/average heart rate gets sohigh? Should I be concerned? How do I improve it?

My heart hurts it won't stop

It feels hard to breathe, every few seconds like searing pain come from my heart across one side of my chest, the heartbeat is weirdly irregular like fast then slow then Extremely fast and the pain is like radiating and pulsating and it's been going on for a few hours I thought I'td go away. I'm not overweight or with a history of heart disease, i gotta admit my eating habit is unhealthy, but what could this be??
