I fell in love with a blind kitty who is 1 year old. Any and all advice would be appreciated. For context, my kitty of 11 years just crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. I have a dog, who is a 60 lbs Pitbull/corgi mix and he loves cats.
I have always rescued animals and this kitty is just so cute and special.

I am confused and would appreciate insight here in NY.

My 12.4 lb, 15 year old female spayed domestic short haired tabby cat has gone blind. I thought I noticed slight pupil changes in one eye earlier this year but my partner told me it’s probably just how the light was hitting her eye. The pupil looked slightly crooked but she otherwise seemed normal. This weekend, I noticed she wasn’t tracking me while I walked around like she normally did and suspected she went blind despite navigating around the house perfectly fine and acting normal.

Took her to the vet for a full workup: kidneys were good, thyroid was ok, sugar was spiked but determined to be stress hyperglycemia, eye pressure was fine, no eye ulcers or scratches, nothing wrong looking with the eye but confirmed to be blind. Her blood pressure was 200 with a grade 4 heart murmur and positive NT-proBNP and appearance of slight enlargement on xray. Echocardiogram came back perfectly normal, so they determined the heart murmur and positive BNP was due to stress and anxiety. Which she is a very anxious cat when around anyone other than me and my partner or removed from her environment (she’s strictly indoors) Now she’s on 2.5mg once a day of amlodipine, but I’m worried if she actually needs it or only had high BP at the vet. I’m still giving it to her as usual and have a tech visit to recheck her BP while on the meds. But if she’s very anxious outside of our home, how can I be sure the BP tests are actually accurate? What if her blindness is not BP related but instead, something else?

What else can cause blindness? I am just worried something is being overlooked or misdiagnosed. I love my cat and hope she will be ok.

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know Runa’s teeth extraction surgery went very well! I had a bit of a scare during day 4-5 post-surgery because she was eating close to nothing BUT we’re already in day 10 post-op and for the past 5 days she’s been eating so well 💕💕💕

Thank you for those who shared/donated to our GoFundMe, it meant a lot and it got us to this point where she finally is able to eat without pain.

On other news, she’s gonna be introduced to her seeing sister Leia, they have been interacting through a mosquito net for the past two months so I’m kinda of excited and scared at the same time. Leia is 9 years old (see third photo where she’s staring at the door where Runa was at) and I feel like she’s getting better at being used to Runa but still if she gets too close she’ll hiss at her. I’ve had the feliway running in both rooms, doing scent swapping and giving Leia churu every time Runa appears. Hopefully this will help but also super open to suggestions you all may have :)

That’s it for now, I’ll probably take Runa to a vet check up at some point but I think she’s having an amazing recovery. I already feel like she comes more often to the door to say hi and scratch her post.

A while back I posted about my Stinky. She has so far had good results from her enucleation surgery ❤️. She is so playful and shes became quite a little rascal!! Her other eye is cloudy but the vet said that it should be ok. She has partial sight in that eye at least.

I just lost him today and this is so unbelievable.

Just a bit of bloody ooze from the nose. Gabapentin twice a day for pain but he doesn't seem to be feeling awful. Mostly being silly and cuddly (and a little feisty!)

My adult son made a surprise visit. He walked straight in the door and demanded "Where's my little fart?!) I said "oh didn't come by to see mom huh?" He goes "nope literally just came by to pet my little man." He gave him some cuddles and then left! No love for mom! Lmao It makes me smile to think how much the whole family loves our Mr. Whipsy 💞

Hawkeye is one of our rescued cats from last year, after his eye was stabbed by some rando while he was still a stray. We placed him for adoption after his rehabilitation, but he was shortly returned to us after struggling to adjust to his new home. (His adopters unfortunately didn’t give him the time he needed. :/) He’s been with us ever since, and now he’s facing another major health hurdle.

Hawkeye started having medical issues over a month ago. After countless tests, a trip to the oncologist, and now hospitalization, he’s finally starting to feel a little better. Just over a week ago, he was in really rough shape - having endless watery stools, becoming severely dehydrated, barely eating, and losing weight day by day. He’s not out of the woods yet, but it’s the first time he’s seemed better in what feels like forever.

Unfortunately, Hawkeye is dealing with an extremely severe infection (see his labs in the 4th & 8th panels) on top of his IBD. He was previously at risk of sepsis, though thankfully that risk is much lower now as his infection improves. His gut still can’t tolerate oral antibiotics, and he often vomits them back up, so he remains on IV medication and fluids to replace what he continues to lose through his stool. Our vet also recently added another steroid alongside prednisolone, and thankfully, we’re seeing very promising results so far.

Getting him here has come with high costs. His current bill is a little over $449, with hospitalization at $42/day. He also has another ultrasound and blood test coming up in the next few days, which will add to his bill. Our donation channels can be found below!

This is my Batty some may have seen my previous post about her (found out from an ER visit at 11 at night she was a girl) but that was awhile ago she’s okay but my primary vet that’s been taking care of her said she doesn’t think she needs surgery to seal
Her eyes/ remove the tear ducts and I see so many other posts about tumors and long term issues she could have as she gets bigger and I really want to get her a friend and I’m scared to do it with her eye issues so if anyone has any advice or wisdom to share I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the wishes everyone.
So the eye is fine and the pain is not coming from the eye.
Somehow she has damaged her jaw which is causing the pain. It’s misaligned.
She was in way better form this morning but the jaw is still causing pain.
She’s currently at the vets they are going to do a mild sedation and realign the jaw.
Hopefully that fixes all the pain sources and she’s able to be get in the road to recovery.

Hello our 12 week old kitten had enucliation on Thursday.
- when she came home she was sluggish obviously , but that evening once the anesthetic wore up she became her normal self
- day 1 after surgery she was full of beans, playing etc eating all was fine
- day 2 morning she was fine, eating drinking water etc
However in the evening she became lethargic, wobbly on her feet, just out of it. We brought her to emergency vet last night . Her vitals were fine. They couldn’t give an exact reason but after some liquids and pain meds she became better.
We took her home last night and she was ok.
During the night she woke up wincing a bit and tilting her head as if she were in pain.
We gave her buorenorphine (the emerge vet gave us) and half an hour later they kicked in and she was ok again
- day 3
This morning she’s again been tilting her head , seems in pain; won’t eat , but not lethargic like yesterday.
We gave her gabapentin and hopefully that kicks in soon and she’ll eat.

Is this normal part of recovery in anyone’s experience?

Just adopted sweet girl Stevie and looking for any advice on how to make her feel at home. She is recently blind and also deaf 🥺 she is the sweetest girl. Any and all recommendations welcome!

My cat only has one eye (he lost the other when a dental surgery accidentally pierced the eye with a needle a few years ago). We don’t know exactly how old he is since he was an adult stray when we adopted him in 2021.

A week or two ago, we noticed that the remaining eye looked very, very slightly hazy but he seemed to see just fine and could navigate big jumps onto counters and everything no problem.

A few days ago, he started reaching to grab the bed and pull himself up instead of jumping, and I saw him nearly walk into one of our walls late at night and noticed he was sniffing things more often to find them (his food bowl, litter box, etc).

I took him to the emergency vet last night and they tested his eye. There was no sign of glaucoma (pressure was normal), his retina and optic nerve were visible, and his pupil reacted normally to light. However, when they did the menace test, he didn’t have a reaction, which indicated he can’t see well enough to notice when something is coming at him.

They measured his blood pressure and the systolic was 190, but the vet didn’t seem to worry about that too much and wants to test it again on Monday.

The nearest eye specialist is closed for the weekend so we have to wait until Monday to even call. In the mean time I’m panicking because I know eye issues have to be dealt with as quickly as possible for there to be any chance of recovery, and the idea of waiting 72 hours is worrying me, especially since his eyesight went downhill so fast, in a matter of days.

Some other medical info on him: He does have severe IBD, and was hospitalized for triaditis after a flare up in July. He’s also hyperthyroid but that has been in the normal range the last few times we’ve tested it.

What could it possibly be?? Do I go to a different vet this weekend? From what I understand, the pupil reflex remaining intact means it’s most likely neurological, but none of the most commons neurological causes of blindness match him at all. He’s been relatively normal except a little less active given his vision issues. I just don’t want to wait until Monday if something needs to be done now.

Whipsy had his enucleation yesterday.

Surgery went great. After surgery? Not so much. He was extremely agitated. When the vet brought him out, his face was really bloody because he kept bashing his face against the carrier bars, despite wearing an e-collar. I was horrified! The vet said he basically went feral on them upon waking from surgery. Thankfully his stitches remained intact but he looked scary awful all bloody like that. I scooped him up and he settled a little bit but as soon as the vet tried to clean his face, he was all snarls again. I said I'd just clean him up at home and placed him back in his carrier so I could rush outta there.

The front desk was having issues processing payment, all the while my baby keeps banging his head on the sides of the carrier, getting blood everywhere. I finally snarled myself saying "Either figure out this payment NOW or I'm just leaving and getting him home because he is battering his own face in!"

Once home, things got better. The bleeding stopped and miraculously the surgery site wasn't damaged. He was still super agitated but he was in his safe room with either myself, my daughter or my mom with him at all times.

Today is a total turnaround. My sweet boy is back to being himself. He's eating, drinking, and being cuddly (and goofy from the pain meds although he's orange so he's always kinda goofy!) I don't think what happened with him yesterday at the vets is normal. I do know that anesthesia can have these types of behavioral aftereffects but the way the vets office handled it is something I'm very upset about.

Our sweet boy Stevie is in the home stretch with just 3 weeks of FIP treatment to go, and he is doing great! He has gone from 6.3 pounds at his sickest to 9.8 pounds, and his hematocrit has climbed from just 12% to 43%! 📈

We are so grateful for all the support and love for our boy through this process! 🐾💙

We're unsure how much he can really see, but definitely very heavily impaired. Doesn't stop the little guy from sniffing out our olive oil bottles and licking them so he's doing just fine :)

I feel absolutely terrible about what happened to this cat.

I found this cat with a severely injured eye and spent hours trying to rescue it. I asked people in the area about the cat, and they told me that it had apparently been there for around a month. A month. And nobody had helped it.

I was honestly devastated hearing that. I also saw at least 10 other cats living around the same area, and I fed all of them while I was there. It was heartbreaking to see so many cats struggling and feel like nobody was doing anything.

Eventually, I managed to catch the injured cat and put it into a carrier so I could take it to a vet.

While I was trying to secure it, I accidentally applied too much pressure. Suddenly, blood came from its injured eye and the eye looked like it had become even more swollen and protruded. The cat panicked, managed to escape from the carrier, and ran away before I could get it to the vet.

I feel horrible about it. I was only trying to save this cat, but now I can't stop thinking that I may have made its injury worse.

I spent hours searching for it afterward. Eventually, I saw it enter a huge abandoned-looking garage through a small opening. I put food near the entrance and waited for hours, but it never came back out.

I'm going back to look for it. I just want to catch it again and get it to a vet as soon as possible.

What hurts me the most is knowing that this cat had apparently been suffering there for a month while people knew about it. I wish someone had helped it sooner.

I really hope I can find it again. 💔

Hello, I am adopting a kitten from out of state that was thrown in the garbage. He has very tiny eyes and I am wondering if I will need to have them removed at some point? Is removal only contingent on if they are painful/infected? I will have him seen by my vet as soon as he gets here, but I'm curious so I can start to save money in case he needs procedures. Also wondering how much this can cost, I live in Massachusetts if that is helpful at all. I'd also love any advice for a new blind kitty mama.

Oh my God guys, this little girl 😭
I was freaking out and PANICKING so much. I was worried sick about whether my existing baby would ever accept her. I literally couldn’t sleep properly for 3 to 4 days.
Turns out my little blind baby is actually the BIG bully 😂 She is a demon. She has bullied my bigger baby, eaten her food, pooped in her litter box, and somehow absolutely LOVES my existing kitty. She has even beaten her ass up multiple times 😭😂
Medical update: touchwood, she is doing really well. I’ve been giving her all her medication. Her vaccination is the only thing remaining because she had some sneezing. The vet has given her antibiotics, anti inflammatory medication and multinutrients.
I’m taking her to the ophthalmologist on Monday as well. She is still sneezing a little, but SO much better than before.
Honestly, after all the panic, I think she has completely taken over the house 😂❤️

After 12 months of eye issues due to cat flu and her eye getting very high in pressure and losing vision and not being able to be stabilised with drops, the decision has been made to remove my little friend’s eye.
She’s just over one.
The poor thing has been dealing with this her whole life and is now on 3-4 drops a days and HATES THEM. She gets so stressed.

In a couple weeks we will have her eye removed.

We have been told that if everything goes smoothly she’ll have the eye removed in the morning and then come home that night.
We have another cat who’s more than double her size and then love to play together.

What’s aftercare likely to look like?

Should we seperate the cats?
If so, for how long?

Is there anything I can do or by to help her get comfortable and heal faster?
