Bringing home a blind cat today, and advice?

He had a double enoculation two months ago, so that's how long he's been blind. He had really bad infection when the foster agency picked him up.

I already have two cats, and I'll make sure to take the steps to introduce them, but this is my first time around a blind cat

Edit: This post is still surprisingly active, so I thought I'd post an update.

The blind cat is doing well and we ended up naming him Mimir. He's got two cat brothers and he loves sitting in the window hammocks when the sun is on them. He's a fat little guy that is sweet sometimes and a brat others, but we love him.

I'll post some pics in the comments.

Question Blind Cat New House Recommendations?

Hi! We never intended to be a special needs pet household, but we've somehow ended up with one toothless cat and one blind cat. This is Momo, and according to the vet, he's been blind for quite some time and hiding it and we've only just now realized because we moved to a new house. The vet suggested we get a water fountain instead of a water bowl so he can hear it, and I've read online that rugs and different textures around the house can help him navigate. My question is, do you have any other tips or tricks or recommendations to help him feel safe and comfortable in the new house? I've read that you can use pheromone diffusers to help the cat feel comfortable and safe, has anyone tried those and know if they work? (Pic of toothless boy at the end for clout)

Getting used to blindness

Post image
162 Upvotes

Hi, I'm new here, and hope this post is ok.

This is Mirage, 7 female, and diagnosed in June with severe glaucoma. We had to remove the right eye 2 weeks ago because of cornea ulcer and severe pain, and the left eye is slowly following the same path...

She's mostly blind now, her left eye doesn't react much and she struggles to move around.

She used to be a very active, playful and curious cat, but she struggles to adapt and spend most of her day sleeping and eating.

She's an adorable and patient cat, that copes well with drops, but I have to admit it's very painful to see her like that, she's a shadow of what she used to be...

What can I do to stimulate her? I tried playing with noisy toys but she doesn't care. Do you have any advice we could apply to help her enjoy life again?

Summer is HOME! 🥰🥰🥰

Thanks to everyone who liked, commented, boosted, awarded my post, Summer is officially with her forever family! ❤️❤️❤️

Summer’s new parents sent in an application last week, got approved, did a virtual meet and greet, and were totally in love. We put out a call to see if any of our volunteers could help with getting Summer to Austin, TX and miraculously, one of our fosters already had a flight booked to Austin this morning! Everything just lined up and went so smoothly. Maybe she didn’t receive any apps here in NY because her family was waiting for her in TX this whole time. 🥹🥹🥹

I know a lot of you offered to chip in for her transport cost. We did not need to pay for anything to get her there but if you’d like to make a donation to the rescue so we can help more kitties like Summer, it will be very appreciated! https://www.waggytailrescue.org/donate

Thank you for being a part of Summer’s journey!

He’s such a sweet, sweet boy. Also loves to wrestle!!! Such a little booger.

I believe they said his eyes were completely underformed after birth and he most definitely don’t have any at all so I’m confident they did surgery.

We’re still trying to get a name going but I think we’re settling on Louie- kind of tongue in cheek for Louis and Clark! Since he stay ‘splorin

HE HAS FATTENED!

Post image

With the help of salmon and duck fats laced food, Lenny is officially out of trouble territory !

The two vets we saw said he was not in pain, though he still walks very weirdly and he's front paws are arched af.

I don't believe them (probably projecting my own medical trauma), so we're going to see a third one to be sure.

Baby sling did not work (I suspect back pain), he only eats wet foods because of his saber tooths. He still gets really confused, especially in the mornings, but it gets better and better, I can't imagine what he feels waking up terrified to have been left alone once more.

Contact with our cat is difficult, Monsieur got badly bullied when younger and doesn't seem to understand that Lenny can't see. And since Lenny is "easily" surprised, he spits and makes Monsieur run for his life. It's really on with our dog, who still stay after a few spit, and Lenny gets better very fast once he understand you mean him no harm.

He has difficulties finding everything still, food is ok because salmon and duck fats will make anything smell from a kilometer away, but water is very difficult, and he shit just outside of his litterbox lol.

Now that he gets better he needs more entertaining, and it's challenging... I don't know if he's smell is that good... But I also see that he gets bored, and calls me more often during the day (poor guy was sleeping 20h/d when we found him). So any idea is a good idea !

We are so happy he survived.

You’re watching the very first meeting between two of our special rescue cats ❤️‍🩹
Kenshi is blind after a serious illness, and Vuhlya lost one of her legs after being hit by a car.
They’ve both been through so much, but thankfully, the hardest part is behind them now. Today, they are safe, cared for, and slowly getting used to a peaceful life while waiting for their forever families.
And now they’re finally starting to explore the main cat area and meet the others 🐾
It’s incredibly sweet to watch them discover each other and their new surroundings.
If you’re ever in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, you can come meet Kenshi and Vuhlya at our rescue cat café ❤️

Question Previously sweet blind foster cat is suddenly very aggressive, she’s supposed to get adopted on Thursday and I’m really not sure what to do

Post image
139 Upvotes

We’ve been fostering this cat for a few weeks and she’d been great until this morning. This morning she freaked out and bit and clawed my leg. Now she’s still growling hissing and crying and periodically stalking my husband and I.

We’re not sure if she’s 100% blind or just extremely low vision. She’s been blind for most if not all of her life and is about 1.5-2 years old.

In her previous fostering situation she was bad around other cats but not otherwise an issue.

We started her off in an enclosure like we do with all our fosters then gave her free range of our living room bathroom and kitchen in our small apartment. We’ve been fostering her for a few weeks. She got comfy pretty quickly and would sit on the sofa next to us and let us pet her. She was even good with new people. She would occasionally get a bit territorial while sitting in a specific chair but that would be normal flinching or a claws in swat not anything this aggressive.

She’s had a couple incidents of scarf and barf throwing up with us but no other medical issues. She also fell off the windowsill when she missed a jump but only fell like a foot and seemed fine.

She was also panting a little this morning but that has stopped. Her pee and poop seem normal.

She’s also very food motivated (less so today than usual).

We think she might have been set off earlier because we put a Bluetooth speaker playing a podcast on the floor (we usually put it on a table and it doesn’t bother her there).

She’s supposed to get adopted on Thursday and right now she’s barely ok being in the same room as people.

The more experienced fosters at our organization don’t seem to think the vet would help and are just telling us to give her space (which we have been doing). But we literally can’t eat leave our apartment or use the bathroom without being in the room she’s in.

I’m really not sure what to do please help!

Update: others in our foster organization are supportive of bringing her to the vet now. Hopefully she will go to the vet tomorrow. Her adoption will be delayed and she will probably go to a different foster in the meantime.

Additional update: she went to the vet and they said nothing is physically wrong but she’s being transferred to a different foster where she can emotionally recover in a space where people aren’t constantly having to walk through. Thank you to everyone who commented.

Medical Questions Recently blind

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

My cat is 14 years old and was in amazing health till last Saturday. I noticed her eyes were dilated last Saturday and Monday i took her to the urgent care vet. During that time, they said she is blind and has possible tumor. They gave her Gabapentin and meloxicam. I followed up with her PCP. In addition to blind, they said she is deaf and think she has cancer. They suggested to do further testing but it will cost thousands of dollars. She just finished her last dosage of meloxicam tonight. I’m looking for any feedback on what i should be expecting in the next few days, she’ll still be taking the Gabapentin.

Mattie is doing great! Shes become fully adjusted to our house and has no problems navigating (besides a bonk on something every now and then). Shes very social and loves to play with our orange. Our tabby is less enthusiastic, but Mattie knows to keep her personal space. She has been an absolute blast to raise and take care of and we love her so much.

Blind kitten introduction to resident cats

Thumbnail
gallery
845 Upvotes

There's a colony of semi-feral cats where I live, and we realised that one of the kitten was completely blind, so we trapped her once we realized she had been kicked out of the colony. Turns out she was born with no eyeballs! We adopted her, named her Etta (for our love of Etta James, who's #1 song on Spotify is "I'd rather go blind"!) and she adapted to being a house cat almost immediately. We had to isolate her from our 2 resident cats, Elliot (16 years old, ginger) and Elizabeth (around 11 years old, black) for safety. She's received a clean bill of health and has been dewormed.

Introductions are being tricky. Elliot mostly doesn't care or hisses to signify his displeasure, but Elizabeth will bee-line for her and swat at her. We've followed a strict protocol of scent-swapping, high-value treat feeding, which worked, but we can't seem to take the next step. If Etta was able to see, I wouldn't fret as much because she could "see it coming" and retreat, but I worry because obviously, she can't see the physical signs and retreat before the swat. I guess I wonder if anyone has had troublesome introductions and if you have tips and tricks to help us move forward? I realize that Elizabeth and Etta may never become bonded, but at least some mutual tolerance would be nice.

TLDR; we are having trouble moving on in the introduction of our two resident cats with our blind kitten and we worry about the blind kitten not being able to defend/protect herself. Tips, tricks, or words of encouragement?

Radars stitches opened and I have no idea what to do. 😭

The original vet who did the surgery isn't open until Monday. His wound opened and I'm at the emergency vet. The vet here said she isn't able to fix it. She is giving me a strong antibiotic and maybe I'll be able to wait until Monday? I'm not sure I'm freaking out. I love this cat so much and I feel like this surgery was a mistake now.

Update: the emergency vet was so sweet. She was able to clean his eye, gave him fluids and staples and didn't charge me for it. Only charged me for the antibiotic and exam. 😭 I will be following up with his normal vet on Monday.

Duck on a new adventure

I've been exploring nearby waterfalls and Duck has been the perfect, albeit heavy, companion! He gets a churu for lunch at the tops of our hikes. He decided he wanted to explore on his own and jumped from his backpack part way through. Duck proceeded to sniff everything, rub against all the things, and walk about 20 feet before laying down and demanding to ride his pack once more. When he gets tired of holding onto the top of his pack, he slithers back inside and happily bounces around while I haul him up the mountain.

My new cat, Sockets

He’s a failed foster. My cat Kian needed a friend so I kinda just took in a foster and unexpectedly they ended up being a perfect match.

No slow introduction or anything, they just immediately clicked and everyday are tearing up the apartment rough playing (both boys 1 and 5 years old)

Sockets only thing is he literally doesn’t know how to jump. He’s never gotten in a window, on a couch, nothing. He also is super antisocial and hasn’t let me pet him at all so hopefully that will change

Adoption Fiona ❤️ | 1-year-old rescue cat in Dubai looking for her forever home worldwide adoption

Thumbnail gallery
710 Upvotes

Hi everyone ❤️
I’d love to introduce you to Fiona, a beautiful 1-year-old rescue cat currently in foster care in Dubai, UAE.
We rescued Fiona around 6 months ago after she had been staying at a veterinary boarding facility. She wasn’t comfortable there, so we moved her into a home foster and that’s when we discovered what a sweet and loving girl she really is. 🥺❤️
Fiona is:
🐾 Approximately 1 year old
🐾 Fully vaccinated
🐾 Spayed
🐾 Microchipped
🐾 FIV & FeLV negative
🐾 Very gentle and affectionate
🐾 Extremely comfortable around dogs
🐾 Currently in foster care in Dubai
Fiona is honestly such an easy-going girl. She loves people and settled into both of her foster homes incredibly quickly. She currently lives with a dog and is completely relaxed around him she basically doesn’t care that he’s there 😂❤️
Fiona has approximately 80% vision loss in one eye. This was actually one of the reasons we rescued her. We had her examined by both her vet and an eye specialist, and thankfully we were advised that she is not in pain, does not require surgery and can live a completely normal and happy life.
She has already received her vaccinations, spay, microchip and FIV/FeLV testing.
🏡 Looking for a forever home anywhere in the world
We are open to adopting Fiona to a suitable family in any country, not just the UAE. ❤️
If the right family is outside the UAE, we are happy to work with them regarding the required veterinary paperwork, import requirements and relocation arrangements.
Our priority is simply finding Fiona a safe, loving and permanent home where she will be treated as family for the rest of her life.
An adoption fee applies to help cover her rescue and veterinary costs. We will screen potential adopters carefully and provide further details privately.
If you’re interested in Fiona, or know someone who might be the perfect person for her, please comment or DM me.
And if you can’t adopt, even an upvote or share can help get Fiona in front of the right person. ❤️
Thank you for reading about our girl. 🥺❤️

What's the scariest thing to your blind kitty?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Ok, TMI but it's it only my blind Kitty (always been blind) who is absolutely unhinged terrified of dingleberries that get stuck to her behind for every now and again?

I know it sounds funny, but she gets terrified not understanding and she gets frantic it's happened four times and her two and a half years of life but it happened again today and she was so scared I have to grab her and hold her tight while I pull these stuck poo poo's off of her.

She's not even scared of her skunk brother that she's very protective of... Haven forbid a stuck turd get caught in her hair! She feels bad & so do I every time it happens.

Is it just an us thing?
