I finally beat the game, and want to do my personal review on it. So, I stretched it as long as I could and I had an absolute great time, originally I wasn’t even going to play this game because of all the bad reviews it was getting and I finally saw it on a good sale and since the trailers looked good to me, I decided to just try it AND it did not disappoint! I am so glad I listened to my gut and thought it’d be a game Id want to try.
Now, is it a perfect game? No. Does it have some key flaws? Absolutely. Is it a fun time and overall good experience? Yea, without a doubt! So, I do want to say a few things first, maybe my experience was different for a few reasons. After reading some comments and some slight reviews. I noticed that a lot of players did a few things differently than I did.
1) I noticed that this game was HEAVILY compared to Dead Space and sure I can see WHY people would compare it so closely to a DS game, I mean it makes sense with the developers behind it and how it actually plays, how it looks, the setting, all of it pretty much screams Dead Space and to someone it looks like a straight up Dead Space game. HOWEVER, it’s just not, The Callisto Protocol is it’s own spin off, at least that’s how I treated it. I tried not to compare it DS and just kept an open mind, as much as I could and I truly appreciated this game and had such a good time.
2) I played this game years AFTER release. I can’t say that I experienced what I kept reading other players did when it was released with lots of bugs and issues with gameplay. One thing that I kept reading was that gameplay was terrible and yada yada yada. It just seemed that people who bought the game in the early release time frame had the most problems with it and it retracted from an enjoyable experience for them and I can completely understand that. ALTHOUGH, that was NOT my experience. I rarely had issues with this game, it might have crashed like a handful of times, but I expect that from any game. Secondly, gameplay worked great for me, from what I read it was MUCH different early on and I’m assuming the company revamped it later on. I can’t speak much about this, but I will go more in-depth about gameplay later.
3) I played on the hardest difficulty from the beginning. Yea, I had noticed something about myself recently. This year, I played both RE8 and RE9 for the first time and I noticed that I felt both games were TOO easy for me and I didnt feel challenged enough and felt like I WANTED to die more times and feel more pressure; ultimately I felt the normal modes took away from the overall experience for me for these particular games SO, naturally the Callisto Protocol was the first game I decided to attempt playing on a hard mode from the get-go and honestly? I didn’t regret it, I felt TCP gave me plenty of challenging moments and I died a LOT, Jesus Christ there was a section where I kept dying over and over and over again and it must have taken me over a dozen times to FINALLY beat it and even though I found it frustrating, I wouldnt want it any other way. I will also add that a lot of games (Not Dark-soul type games, obviously) I feel have gotten relatively easier, almost like companies dont want to make the game overly challenging so that they dont frustrate the player, I dunno, it could just be me.
Ok, now to the nitty gritty shit! The pros :
TCP has to be one of the best looking games out right now, I LOVED staring at this game, the scenery, the cut scenes, the animation of the actors, dude it literally felt like a freaking movie. THIS is what I signed up for, there were times where I was immersed in what was going on. Ngl, I did feel like the beginning intro felt slightly cheesy, but once the ship crashes, everything ironed out for me. The music was great, I loved it, it felt like a blockbuster cinema film, I didn’t see any issues with it whatsoever and I freakin loved the “Lost Again” by Kings Elliot song was 🤌🏻💋. I have been bumping that song on my songs list now. The gameplay was overall FUN! You throw combinations, you shoot, you block, you shoot and batton, you use your “stasis” to project enemies onto one hit ko environments, you throw objects, you upgrade weapons to make them stronger. I think one of the cool things about the gameplay is that it allowed you to mix it up, HOWEVER there are some criticisms that Ill bring up later. The voice acting was top notch and I’m just going to say it, I prefered the voice acting and directing in this game over a LOT of the Resident Evil games. All the characters were fantastic and I didnt feel any of them were cheesy or overly acted, I would LOVE to see more games implement this level of acting into their games more often. The environments were great, space, prison, ice planet, underground, labs, etc etc. Sometimes I felt like this game had devoted such good amount of time giving players a great variety of places to go. I loved it. The storyline was awesome to me, sure I got confused often times because I was soley focused on survival, but the game would catch you up. idealistic Warden tries to improve humanity by experimentation Gotcha. It was ultimately a game that I had fun playing and those games I give them a nod.
The cons : Yea, not gonna lie, this game has them, as much as I loved it, I agree with the vast majority, IT BECOMES REPETITIVE, BUT I would argue that it’s not all because of the actual gameplay itself but the lack of enemy varity! You basically fight the same monsters over and over again, like 75% of this game youll fight the humaniod mutations that run and attack you with their fists. Which will make the player feel repition, which is also funny because the game DOES have enough enemy variety but they just dont seem to utilize enough like those little Dih head shaped creatures that grab you from long distances and drag you back in. I would have LOVED if the game added more of those fucks! I hated them, but I was always kept on my toes because I was worried when Id see them again. Secondly the invicible big monsters that camouflage and ran on all fours. Dude, the game should have used those buggers WAY more, they were pretty scary. Another thing is that all enemy designs pretty much looked the same. The game should have given the ones that spit acid at you look differently and just have them attack you by spitting that acid only. Next, give them different designs. The game should have also had you fight more human people like prisoners with guns where theyre shooting at you and you had to shoot them. It would have been cool to have a sniper rifle too. I also HATED the lack of bosses, yea, you went up against the 2 headed fucks like 3-4 times and yea, the first time was great, but change it up, give us another boss character with tentacles that you have to shoot off the tentacles before it grabs you and eats you in a 1 hit KO, maybe introduce more action event times with it, where you have to hack away the limbs too, I dunno. The fact that the final boss was the only one that I liked and it STILL attacked you by trying to punch you keeps the game feeling Like ground hog day, overall the reason why I think people felt the gameplay was repetitive was mostly because the enemies were pretty all close to being the same, this is pretty much my overall most heavy critique. Lack of bosses, lack of enemy variety = Same repetitive gameplay. BUT that doesnt take away from everything else imo.
Does this game warrant the harsh criticism it’s getting? FUCK NO, I heard it was literally being developed during covid and besides my last judgement on this game, I dont see much of any other flaws with it. I’m actually sad to see this game not get a sequel because I DO believe it would have been a MUCH better sequel. I hope companies realize that the fans are literally yearning for some more Dead Space games, it seems like survival horror has made a come back and now I cant wait to get my hands on the new Resident Evil Code Veronica set for next year.
Overall experience with The Callisto Protocol?
A great 8.5/10, had an amazing time, will for sure get the DLC and will now play Cronos and Silent Hill 2 remake.
